I was invited to talk in UNRI Pekan Baru, Sumatera on 20 August 2008 on "Solving the Identity of Illusive Flowering Plant Endoparasites: Are We Sharing the Same Species?". If you happen to be somewhere near UNRI, please join us.
A parasitic plant is simply one that derives some or all of its sustenance from host plant. More than 4000 parasitic plants in 19 families are documented in the world. They are either food-making facultative photosynthatic hemiparasites (need the host to obtain water and mineral nutrients) or obligate holoparasites that cannot complete its life cycle without a host. Unlike facultative parasites which are mostly opportunistic plants, holoparasites are also known as host specific endoparasites since they are survived inside stem or/and root of the selected host vines or trees. There are also special group of about 400 species of flowering plants and one gymnosperm which are parasitic on mycorrhizal fungi and known as myco-heterotrophs, and generally not included in parasitic plants proper.
Holoparasitic plants is so illusive and difficult to study but continue to be high in priority among botanists because they are very interesting in evolution and phytogeography. Most endoparasites are generally host specific, and they tend to be restricted in distribution and highly endemics to certain area. They are endangered because they are biologically disadvantaged and sensitive to disturbance.
Most of these endoparasites were once grouped within Rafflesiaceae s.l. and Balanophoraceae but the family have been scrutinized lately and split into various families. Genera which are once in Rafflesiaceae s.l. such as Mitrastema, Apodanthus and Cytinus are now classified into their own families viz. Mitrastemonaceae, Apodanthaceae and Cytinaceae respectively. Currently Rafflesiaceae are confined to celebrated rare Southeast Asian endemic species within Rafflesia, Rhizanthes and Sapria. and together with Balanophoraceae, these taxa becomes celebrity in their own right. Less known Balanophoraceae is more widespread with about 100 species in 17 genera and Balanophora, Helosis, and Rhopalocnemis are the three genera that are known to occur here in SEA. Ongoing taxonomic and systematics study on species of Rafflesiaceae in Sumatera, Peninsular Malaysia, and Borneo curently indicates that no species of these taxa are being shared between these phytogeographic regions. Field analysis, molecular study and morphological re-evaluation Rafflesia hasseltii, Rafflesia cantleyi and Rafflesia arnoldii complexs seems to indicate that no species are being shared between Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula and Borneo and they are all restricted hyper-endemics to small confined area. Similar studies on Balanophoraceae probably would find the similar trend. Our previous knowledge are confined to scanty, limited and confusing herbarium materials and more field studies would yield new species and reinterpretation os species.
This discussion is targeted to awake more local botanists in Indonesia and Malaysia to carry out detail investigation in the field for these families.

I bought this bag all prepped like this - it's not my hack, except for the crown mount.
A lovely picture of a tree-lined road overlooking a loch, with a hill-range in the background.

No idea where. Higher res will hopefully help. The following six images are from the same batch of very large plates. This neg may be reversed. Not sure.
A small rowing boat sits on the shore near the side of a loch. A few small buildings can be seen in the background.

Online help to solve Graphing equations Friends, we all know that graphing is like playing games, making circles, angles, lines parabolas on graphs. So before going in deep let's discuss about the graphs. Graph is basically a pictorial representation that exhibits a relationship between two sets of numbers as a set of points having coordinates determined by the relationship. We can also call it as a plot. In general graphs are used to show trends.

One year after the launch of the Horizon 2020 programme, Science|Business brought together applicants, project holders, industry executives and key policy makers to take stock of the programme and discuss the most important challenges for Europe to solve over the next 20 years. How can the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme, in tandem with corporate R&D and university science, solve them?
