The bridge between Fuengirola and Castillo Sohail in Fuengirola.

El puente de la Armada Española, en Fuengirola, fue inagurado en 2006 y su nombre se lo debe a las maniobras realizadas por la Armada en una playa cercana.

 

Al lado del Parque del Castillo Sohail, se ha construido este puente, a modo de pasarela peatonal sobre el Rio Fuengirola.

 

Su diseño es muy actual, el típico puente colgante con la base central de hormigón y tirantes de acero. Lo más bonito es el entorno, con el castillo a un lado y la playa al otro y que invita a caminar o practicar cualquier tipo de deporte al aire libre.

Qatlama or Katlama is a large-orange colored deep fried roti/poori topped with the layer of gram flour (besan) mixed with spices along with lentils, coriander seeds and pomegranate seeds.

Castillo Sohail

Sohail Castle

 

Sohail castle is located in he heart of Fuengirola river mouth, on a small isolated hill that rises 38 meters above sea level. This circumstance makes it a privileged viewpoint of a wide coastal strip surrounded by the Sierra de Mijas and included in the present day town of Fuengirola.

 

The magnificent geographical conditions of this place have allowed, since ancient times , the continueous settling of Punic and Roman population. On the ruins of their settlements in the Caliphate period a first tower was built, perhaps a watchtower.

 

Later, in the twelfth centry, the Almovarids built a defensive enclosure against the Christian army, that was in full offensive against the Moorish kingdom of Granada.

From that moment the military fortress underwent an inevitable process of readjustment of its architecture that would gradually give way to its present appearance: replacing the turning entrance by a direct one, demolishing one of the east towers to built up a platform for the placement of guns, or rearranging the southwest corner of the wall to turn it into an archer's wall after its blasting by the Napoleonic army during the war of independence.

 

A few years later the castle lost its military function and was sold at public auction. The transition to civil use took it a period of abandonment that would not be interrupted onto the second half of the last century.

 

The works carried out in recent years by the school workshop have enabled the Sohail Castle to be recovered as a historical meeting point for the people of Fuengirola and as a space where different cultural events are currently held.

Sufi Sama or Dhamaal is a special dance style unique to Sufis in Pakistan and India. The rhythmic beat of dhol i.e. drums, sometimes accompanied by other instruments, makes men sway and whirl their bodies into unusual and fascinating shapes.

It is a bit of a climb to the castle, but it's rather green there, so I really enjoyed the climb tot the castle in Fuengirola as well.

Dahi baray (or dahi bhallay) are a popular snack in Pakistan. Especially in the month for Ramadan where they are served for Iftar (the sunset meal when Muslims break their fast) with other items such as fruit chaat, keema samosas, pakoras and chole chaat. They can also be served as a light snack with tea, or as a side with dinner, or as a component to make mix chaat or dahi baray chaat. It is also a common street food snack, with vendors coming up with their unique toppings, and spice mixes.

Dahi baray are made by grinding white lentils into a paste which is then fried to make lentil fritters. The fried lentils are then soaked in luke warm water till soft, and then added into a creamy yoghurt sauce. The soft and pillowy dahi baray are then topped with spices and sauces. The most common spices include roasted and ground cumin powder (bhuna zeera), red chili powder and salt along with a tamarind chutney and green chutney.

A sort of oasis in the middle of Cholistan desert.

The main source of fresh water in Cholistan Desert is the surface water collected in natural depressions or man made ponds, called “Tobas” during monsoon period. The water in these “Tobas” does not last long due to seepage and high rate of evaporation. The secondary source of water is underground which is mostly brackish and is found at the depth of 30–40 meters.

Mahodand Lake (Urdu: مہوڈنڈ جھیل; Pashto: د ماهو ډنډ - "Lake of Fishes") is a lake located in the upper Usho Valley at a distance of about 35 kilometres (22 mi) from Kalam in Swat District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. The lake is accessible by a four-wheel drive vehicle, and is often utilized for fishing and boating.

The Mahodand Lake lies at the foothills of Hindu kush mountains at an elevation of 2,865 m (9,400 ft), surrounded by the meadows, mountains and dense forests. Similarly, the banks of Mahodand lake are covered by pines and pastures that serve as a camping site during the summer. The Mahodand lake is fed by melting glaciers and springs of the Hindu Kush mountain and gives rise to Ushu Khwar, the major left tributary of the Swat River.

Sajji is a popular dish from the Baluchistan province of Pakistan. It is popularly made with whole lamb or chicken, or big pieces of lamb or goat (like the leg of a goat). These whole lambs, chickens etc are attached to skewers, marinated in simple spices and roasted over coals. They are sometimes even stuffed with rice. It is the brown equivalent of a standard rotisserie chicken. The Sajji turns out juicy and moist from the inside with a crisp skin on top!

Paratha (pronounced [pəˈɾɑːtʰɑː]) is a flatbread native to South Asia, prevalent throughout the modern-day nations of Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, Mauritius, Fiji, Guyana, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago where wheat is the traditional staple. Paratha is an amalgamation of the words parat and atta, which literally means layers of cooked dough.

Parathas are one of the most popular unleavened flatbreads in the Indian subcontinent, made by baking or cooking whole-wheat dough on a tava, and finishing off with shallow-frying. Parathas are thicker and more substantial than chapatis/rotis and this is either because, in the case of a plain paratha, they have been layered by coating with ghee or oil and folding repeatedly (much like the method used for puff pastry or some types of Turkish börek) using a laminated dough technique; or else because food ingredients such as mixed vegetables have been mixed in with the dough, such as potato or cauliflower, green beans, and carrots.

Fruit chaat is the Pakistani version of a fruit salad. Seasonal fruits are diced and mixed with sugar, orange juice and chaat masala. It’s a super refreshing sweet, tangy and spicy fruit salad. In Pakistan, fruit chaat is usually eaten for Iftar during the month of Ramadan. Fruits are also healthy and provide much needed nutrition.

The beauty of fruit chaat is that pretty much any fruit can be used to make it. However, it is best made with seasonal fruit, which is why a winter fruit chaat will have a different assortment of ingredients versus a summer fruit chaat. The choice of the fruit used in a fruit chaat depends on the variety of fruits available in your country, as well as personal preference. Traditionally in Pakistan, commonly used fruits are bananas, apples, guavas and grapes. Depending on availability other fruit such as oranges, mangoes, peaches, nectarines, pomegranates, strawberries, kiwifruit, blueberries are also added.

How to make Pakistani fruit chaat?

•Start off with dicing your fruit. It’s best to dice by hand. Avoid using a food processor as that can turn your fruit into fruit mince, which is not the texture you are going for. Cut all fruit roughly the same size. Apples, pears and any other fruit that can oxidize should be sprinkled with lemon juice to stop them from browning. If using bananas, it’s best to add them a few minutes before serving because they can turn soft and mushy.

•Season: Add sugar, chaat masala and orange juice. The quantity of sugar used may need to be adjusted depending on the fruits used. Instead of sugar, honey can also be used. If oranges are in season, use fresh orange juice. Otherwise, bottled orange juice can be used.

•Let the chaat sit: Mix the fruits and spices together, and then let them sit for about 10 minutes, and then serve. This lets the flavors blend together and creates a delicious fruit juice that tastes absolutely delicious.
