The winter has arrived in Saxony (Germany). On the narrow road towards Grobau you can see the snow dunes, which continue from the wind to the road. Today's sunny weather and the weak wind have made things a bit easier. The snow dunes on the edge of the street are here in the foreground of the picture and are about 40 cm high.

The shoreline on Lake Huron has many wonderful beaches with sand dunes that are now “snow dunes”. The dune grasses poke through some of the mounds of snow as the winds blow off the top layers. In the distance is the Chantry Island Lighthouse which is actually about 1 km offshore sitting on a small island. I chose this forced perspective to give it a different mood. There are other sharp images of this lighthouse in my lighthouse album if you want to check it out. This image is part of my winter project where I try to capture winter scenes that are unique.

*Poudrerie

"Poudrerie" is a Québécois neologism which indicates the snow raised by the wind like a fine powder. "Poudrerie" can occur with or without fall of snow and depends on the force of the wind. One in general needs a wind of more than 40 km/h and snow on the ground made of enough fine flakes to be able to be raised.

Or Snowy sanddunes maybe? I took this photo two day ago on the island Schiermonnikoog where wind, snow and freezing temperatures created Arctic blizzard conditions on the beach. Very interesting to see was the mixture of sand and snow perfectly working together creating a wonderful scenery.

This is a winter shot.

A small tree, alone, lost in the middle of sinuous, almost perfect, untouched snowfields... if not for that sole curly trace of skis and a few animals tracks :-)

Night Photography on the Alps

Night shot taken during a night spent in the month of November near the artificial Lake Agnel (2.300 m), obviously frozen, in the Gran Paradiso National Park (Italy).

This image has a dual lighting:

from above - the moon

from the right - the lake's lighthouse (turned on for all night, even though there was not a soul for miles).

In the distance you can see the mountains Levanne (3.619 m).

The whole area was literally flooded by snow since the lower valley, about 15 kilometers below.

Forget the Nivolet area as you know it in the summer, here the situation was completely polar... and that's actually the reason why I've decided to spend one night with my tent, although I must admit that I have not repeated the experience.

This photograph is quite suitable to complete the "water theme", as shown in previous pictures in the liquid state, then gaseous and now... solid.

Late afternoon shot, taken at the Col du Mont-Cenis (2.083 m), France, portraying the totally snow-covered mountain slopes, even more than usual thanks to a previous day's heavy snowfall.

I've focused my telephoto lens in the direction of the moon, without missing of course the magical and subtle play of light among the frosty dunes.

I love minimalism and, yes, everything was minimal here: the landscape and the temperature :-)

An amazing and very rare view while standing on a sanddune on the beach of Schiermonnikoog, a Dutch island. The blizzardous winds created a wonderful mixture of snowdunes and sanddunes. A very special sight I've never witnessed before in my country...

The day after the blizzard named Darcy in BeDo (Betondorp) on the corner of the Akkerstraat and Veeteeltstraat. The Akkerstraat is one of the few streets with a curve around Brink, the center of this neighbourhood.

Betondorp

Betondorp (popular abbreviated to BeDo) is a neighborhood of Amsterdam, Netherlands. It was built in the 1920s as an experiment in building affordable housing with new, cheap building materials, chiefly concrete. The name translates as 'Concrete Village'. The houses are built in a sober, minimalist form of Art Deco.

Betondorp is located in the Watergraafsmeer neighbourhood. Famous Dutch footballer Johan Cruijff was born and raised in Betondorp. In his teens he joined Ajax, his hometown club that had their stadium and training ground right across from where he grew up. Another famous Betondorp native is Dutch writer Gerard Reve who based the setting of his most famous novel, De Avonden, on Betondorp.
