Who will talk about (and wear) a iWatch in 50 years?

A watch is a small timepiece intended to be carried or worn by a person. It is designed to keep working despite the motions caused by the person's activities. A wristwatch is designed to be worn on a wrist, attached by a watch strap or other type of bracelet. A pocket watch is designed for a person to carry in a pocket.

Watches evolved in the 17th century from spring-powered clocks, which appeared as early as the 14th century. The first watches were strictly mechanical, driven by clockwork. As technology progressed, mechanical devices, used to control the speed of the watch, were largely superseded by vibrating quartz crystals that produce accurately timed electronic pulses. Some watches use radio clocktechnology to regularly correct the time. The first digital electronic watch was developed in 1970.

Most inexpensive and medium-priced watches, used mainly for timekeeping, are electronic watches with quartz movements.Expensive collectible watches, valued more for their elaborate craftsmanship, aesthetic appeal and glamorous design than for simple timekeeping, often have purely mechanical movements and are powered by springs, even though these movements are generally less accurate and more expensive than electronic ones. Various extra features, called "complications", such as moon-phase displays and the different types of tourbillon, are sometimes included. Modern watches often display the day, date, month and year, and electronic watches may have many other functions. Time-related features such as timers, chronographs and alarm functions are common. Some modern designs incorporate calculators, GPS and Bluetooth technology or have heart-rate monitoring capabilities. Watches incorporating GPS receivers use them not only to determine their position. They also receive and use time signals from the satellites, which make them essentially perfectly accurate timekeepers, even over long periods of time.

Developments in the 2010s include smartwatches, which are elaborate computer-like electronic devices designed to be worn on a wrist. They generally incorporate timekeeping functions, but these are only small fractions of what the watch can do.

The study of timekeeping is known as horology.

I went into town for a briefing, for which I needed maybe just a pen and a few sheets of note paper. And yet, I had two smartwatches, an iPad, a MacBook...and four phones.

Why? Well, the Back Bay is my test track for a lot of different tech. Two of the phones were loaners whose cameras hadn't been tested, and then the iPhone was there as a reference to which the two other phone cameras could be compared. The second smartwatch was the Microsoft Band, because I knew I'd do a lot of walking and I wanted to log the GPS data.

It's not a bad gig. Under the guise of doing my job, I spent an hour at the Boston Public Library taking pictures and then an hour or two walking from Copley Square to the Public Garden and then through the Common and onward to South Station.

And yes, the squirrels collected their usual modeling fee.

In a streetcar with 30 - 40 people, the Bluetooth Scanner App showed 44 active devices. 6 of them were known devices like smartphones, smartwatches and headsets. The rest were unknown. Alone in the forest, I did not find any device.

This is a phenomenon that numerous experts and science fiction freaks are dealing with.

Wearing a Fitbit, Apple Watch, Garmin or other tracker allows you to measure your heart rate at all times of day: when you're sleeping, during typical daily activities and during exercise. They then present this data to you in an easy-to-digest way. Activity trackers and smartwatches use optical technology to read the pulse in your wrist. With optical technology, your tracker sends light into your skin and reads the light that bounces back.

Penn Avenue

West Reading, Pennsylvania

Flying over the suburbs of San Francisco on the way into the International Airport. This is no different than most large cities in the world. Everyone want's a home of their own, the great dream for most people, maybe not now but it certainly was in the early '50's, WW II was over, the economy was booming and the suburbs were growing, shopping malls popped up everywhere and for the first time families were even looking at a two car family. We had a black and white TV set in 1956, other families in the neighbourhood had them sooner but my mother was a hold out. Time moves on!... A friend called me the other day from his new Apple WATCH, my phone rang and he said, "Hi John, Dick Tracy here", I knew right away the Apple watch he ordered had arrived. What's next?

***For people who may not know who Dick Tracy is: On January 13, 1946, The 2-Way Wrist Radio, worn as a wristwatch by Tracy and members of the police force, became one of the strip's most immediately recognizable icons, and may have inspired later smartwatches. The 2-Way Wrist Radio was upgraded to a 2-Way Wrist TV in 1964. See more: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Tracy

Second Best "52 Weeks Project"

Since I have been joining the 52 Weeks Project on Flickr it has happened several times that I had to chose between two or more self portraits that week. A difficult choice. The solution is to create a set of all good alternatives. Life is full of choices and sometimes a week has too much opportunities. This is one of those alternatives, the second best. And sometimes just as good.

The year 2020 is the year of working from home and communicating with the outside world from home. Via Skype, Facetime, Teams, Zoom, Whatsapp and Whereby. A positive side effect of Covid-19....

Location: Watergraafsmeer ("Betondorp"), Amsterdam (Oost)

Coordinates: 52°20'26" N 4°57'0" E

Reason: This self-portrait was taken on the day I was interviewed by Paul Haenen on the online program from the Betty Asfalt Complex in Amsterdam. The interview was done via Skype. I made this setting on the dining table with the Eiffel Tower on the background and a space invader shirt. All with a reason of course.

Skype: is a telecommunications application that specializes in providing video chat and voice calls between computers, tablets, mobile devices, the Xbox One console, and smartwatches over the Internet. Skype also provides instant messaging services. Users may transmit text, video, audio and images. Skype allows video conference calls. Released in 2003. In March 2020, Skype was used by 100 million people on a monthly basis and by 40 million people on a daily basis. That was a 70% increase in the number of daily users from the previous month, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

WEEK 51 – Oxford Walmart, During the Remodel

Speaking of entertainment, here's a shot of that area: one of the few portions of the salesfloor to have actually seen some major work this early on in the remodel! Indeed, the entire front half of the department had been reset to feature these snazzy, overly-illuminated, brand-new, low-rise tables, highlighting all sorts of fancy electronic gadgets like phones, tablets, and smartwatches. This display setup can be seen in many recently-remodeled Walmart stores, but not all of them. I'm sure Oxford, of course, managed to score the arrangement due to the town's exploding college student population!

(c) 2018 Retail Retell

These places are public so these photos are too, but just as I tell where they came from, I'd appreciate if you'd say who :)

At the 72nd Street Station on the IND 8th Avenue Line, which serves the B and C trains, I ended up ducking into the station to escape the bitter cold outside, while awaiting dinner nearby with a dear friend from Connecticut.

After decades of tokens, the New York City Subway and Metropolitan Transportation Authority introduced the magnetic MetroCard in the 1990s and eventually phased tokens out. The MetroCard had allowed new features, such as free transfers between subway and bus or between buses, unlimited rides for a given time period, and discounts when purchasing multiple cash rides.

But MetroCard's magnetic technology is now outdated; the stripes are unreliable and the cards are only good for about a year. To move into the 21st Century, the replacement technology, contactless OMNY, was introduced, with fares payable by credit/debit cards, smartphones, smartwatches, or (later) a dedicated OMNY card. At this point in January 2022, only pay-per-ride was available, though daily fare-capping (similar to London Underground on Oyster) would follow the following month. By this point, OMNY was available on all New York City buses and at every subway station, with commuter and suburban services to be added later.

These turnstiles do accept both MetroCard and OMNY. Because OMNY could not do the 7-day unlimited ride option that I needed, I ended up buying a 7-day MetroCard and using that for all my subway rides. Though with OMNY gaining more features over the coming months and MetroCard finally set to be retired in 2023, it appears that I may have bought my very last MetroCard - a bittersweet moment for yours truly, who had come of age in 1990s New York and had been one of the early MetroCard users.

In this Aug. 25, 2016, photo taken in New York, the Samsung S3 classic version, left, displays a series of apps, including Uber, and the frontier version displays Samsung Pay. Samsung's next smartwatch will come with GPS capabilities and the ability to seek help by triple-tapping a side button. GPS will help Samsung stand out with the Gear S3, as the feature so far isn't common in smartwatches. But the watch still faces a dearth in apps compared with Android and Apple. From Glasses and wristbands to Smartwatches and fitness trackers, the field is opening up to a wide range of play. One company is willing to take things to the next level with a gadget that quite possibly has the potential to change the game. Meet the Cicret bracelet. Its aim is to replace a smartphone. Now that is a bold statement to make, but the guys over at Cicret are not kidding around, they genuinely believe that their product could change the way we use wearable tech.

Many apps for Android Wear have terrible design which remind me of the time before Google introduced Material Design. I think as smartwatches are still relatively new, they are still trying to figure out what the UI should look and behave like. Even Apple Watch apps looks bad too.

Notifications come via my Xperia or over Wifi when the phone is not in range. I get a light buzz when a notification comes in. Some Android Wear apps are better than others. the LINE app is kinda bad as I can only see text messages. The WeChat app however shows me photos too and allows me to return voice to text messages.

We hail from an era that has made tremendous technological advancements in every sector, whether that’s healthcare, fashion, food, sports, financial, etc. However, we will mainly focus on the massive advances made in the financial sector when the whole payment system shifted rapidly to digital mode..

Gone are the days when we used to check our wallets twice before leaving home. All we need is our mobile phone to make digital payments, or smartwatches can also do the work. Digital payment has attracted billions globally, even before the pandemic scenario. However, it acted as a turning point from 2020 where people wanted to make contactless payments and maintain social distance..

Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches.

The Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo are pretty similar devices but the Neo omits the 2MP camera, for a reduced weight of 55g. The Gear 2 will weigh 68g.

The poster project was an interesting project. The purpose of the assignment was to find a topic that involved societal issues. For my overall subject I chose to take pictures of technology and it's impact on the world. I was to capture fourteen issues that I personally use almost everyday.

The center picture consisted of the topics I was going to cover throughout the project. Unfortunately I couldn't fit every technological issue because I either didn't own the technology or it was in a store. I found the center picture fascinating because almost every object of technology that was in the picture I use almost everyday and I don't know what I'd do without them.

My first picture on the top left was GPS systems in cars and their technological issues. GPS devices are fallible; they're made so by satellite communication errors and outdated or inaccurate maps. Even when maps are current, some mapping and navigation information doesn't take into account road types. With this type of software error, the road that may look like the shortest distance between Point A and Point B might actually be an unpaved private drive. Because of these factors, drivers find themselves driving on unsafe terrain and into other hazards, such as artificial lakes or train tracks. The more confident you are in what your GPS device tells you, the less likely you are to notice something's wrong. Accident risk increases when drivers take their GPS device's instructions too literally: Warnings of "when possible, make a legal U-turn" send some veering into oncoming traffic.

The second picture was based on portable chargers and it’s backfire on society. Batteries are known to overheat and catch on fire. Which poses a threat to security at airports and human lives. This critical issue is still on the rise and continues to as more people need the extra power for their phones or other devices and ignore the fact that their dangerous. I chose to use my Mophie case as the picture of my issue because I thought it was a prime image to portray portable chargers.

The third picture regards the technological issue of laptops and its effect on society. Laptops are dangerous in many ways. One of the many include; hackers and their ability to take over laptops and control their systems from the other side of the world. I chose to take a picture of a computer because computers are taking over our classes and people use them every day. I like this picture because I liked how it looks with the wood and the black which brings a nice contrast.

My fourth picture on the top right I had taken was in the Tesla store at the Santa Monica 3rd street promenade. Regarding large self driving companies such as Tesla and Google there have been several issues with their development of self driving cars and still have a long way to go. Problems of these include: technology that can’t control the behavior of other drivers. Autonomous vehicles will have to deal with drivers who speed, pass even when there’s a double yellow line and drive the wrong way on a one-way street. Also, weather was a prime cause of system failures after which human drivers had to take back control.

My fifth picture is about video gaming and it's effects on society. The effect of video game violence in kids is worsened by the games’ interactive nature. In many games, gamers are rewarded for being more violent. Too much video game playing makes people socially isolated. Also Games can confuse reality and fantasy. I own a video game console and I can easily say that playing video games certainly excludes me from, family time and more impactful things in life.

My sixth picture comprises of headphones and their concerning effects to humans as a whole. Headphones exclude people from conversation and not to mention being rude when one is taking. Listening to music with headphones can be especially dangerous especially because they destroy your ability of hearing properly. Also, thousands of people listen to music with their headphones on when driving. This act can be life threatening since the driver cannot hear outside noises and therefore wouldn't be able to hear the sound of a siren or car honking.

My seventh picture has been one of the most controversial topics in the past few years. Drones have numerous advantages to our society, however there are several disadvantages that are concerning to security and privacy. A growing number of drones have been flown dangerously close to commercial aircraft's, violating federal rules about their operation. In addition, privacy is one major concern as there are no laws that protect individuals against people stalking or spying on them in their homes, there are no federal laws in place that would protect individuals from being spied on specifically by a drone.

My eighth topic is about the Samsung galaxy note 7 phones and their repercussions of our society. All over America there have been numerous events where these specific phones have been exploding due to their batteries not fitting the actual phone causing it to overheat. The Note 7 has been banned on commercial and international flights because they are highlighted as a hazardous material.

My ninth issue is Game applications such Clash of Clans, Candy Crush and Mobile Strike that are accessible through mobile devices are creating an effect to our society. Not only are children addicted to these games, but also adults as I have seen my own grandfather glued to his device. Students often become easily distracted by these games and do not pay any attention in class. As I have also seen my friends do this throughout the school year.

The tenth picture was based on home security systems. Unfortunately a large percentage of security system activation's are false alarms. This is undeniably frustrating and expensive for homeowners who are inexperienced with security systems. This results in many of them deciding to avoid activating their system to avoid the inconvenience and expense of false alarms. Which is exactly what happened to my family and many other families that I know of.

The eleventh issue consists of social media and it’s continuous result to ruin society. There are countless problems with social media: addiction, lack of attention span, decline in intellectual abilities as well as bullying. Unfortunately, society and the many people I know base their lives around social media and how they portray their lives.

The twelfth topic is about the age of smartwatches and it’s exponential increase of demand. These watches are also marketed as medical devices and fitness trackers to acting as an extension of your smartphone. However, as smartwatches become mainstream, cyber criminals have been gifted with a new avenue to exploit in the quest to steal valuable data.

My thirteenth societal subject was based on television addiction. Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime are just a few online streamers that encourage watching television shows or movies. Similar to playing video games, it makes people socially isolated as well as antisocial. Preferably staying at home instead of going out with your friends is unhealthy and is a societal issue that needs to be taken care of.

The last picture and problem of technological issues involves virtual reality. Several complications have arisen in recent developments. Impairment of hearing and nausea is a significant issue among health problems people will face when using virtual reality headsets. With this image I wanted to capture someone actually using the VR and enhancing the contrast of the picture.

To conclude, the poster project was enjoyable, however I found difficulty trying to put the images onto the actual poster. I had also learn’t many interesting things about technology that I use everyday that I had no clue it would impact society.

In addition to the Galaxy Gear 2 duo of smartwatches, Samsung also unveiled a strictly fitness oriented wristband, called simply the Gear Fit.

The Samsung Gear Fit features a 1.84" curved Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 432 x 128 pixels. It may not sound like much, but the pixel density is quite high at 244 pixels per inch. The colors really pop, as you'd expect from a Super AMOLED display and the contrast is great. We're also happy to report that the viewing angles are also great.

One of the Gear Fit's cornerstone features is its heart rate monitor. It is mounted on the back of the wristband and after a short adjusting displays your heart rate. It works seamlessly and will be helpful for those who want to keep an eye on their vitals.

We’re living in times where we rarely spot someone without a smartphone, smartwatch or fitness tracker, as they’ve become essential gadgets which exploit our lifestyle. Every year, we witness hundreds of launches, which makes our selection journey far-flung and confusing as f**k. To ensure you don’t get trapped in a world of choices, we’ve tested dozens over the past few months to bring you the 7 best smartwatches and fitness trackers.

Why do you need a smartwatch or fitness tracker?

Do you care to know about your heart rate, sleep cycle, daily activities and overall fitness level? If yes, you should get one of these following smartwatches or fitness trackers. Smartwatches and fitness trackers offer almost everything about your health right from your wrist. Over the last few years, the two devices have converged as smartwatches are getting more inclined toward the fitness side while fitness trackers adopted big screens.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch series is the only watch line that has the guts and power to beat Apple watches. When it comes to the design, Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic looks very similar to its cousin Galaxy Watch 4. The device has a circular face with flat edges and offers beyond the premium user experience. The Galaxy Watch 4 Classic runs on Samsung’s One UI Watch 3 platform on top of the Wear OS 3 operating system.

The smartwatch comes in two different size case options, 42mm and 44mm. The 42mm model has a 1.19-inch Super AMOLED display, while the 44mm model has a 1.4-inch display. In terms of screen protection, the watch features Corning Gorilla Glass DX, and in terms of memory, the watch is supported by 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. The Galaxy Watch 4 Classic works best when you pair it up with the Galaxy smartphone.
