While Emily went into work at Octopus Creative today, I snug a rental car and drove to Fremont! All by myself! In a gas car! Yep, and I didn’t even wreck it.

The guy who led the tour was the same dude who did it on our honeymoon, and he was right! The factory is totally different now than it was then. Things have been moved around all over the place, and you can tell they’re transitioning to the X because there were a lot more forklifts running around, where I assume SmartCarts will run once everything is laid down. The tour itself was fantastic. The guy who leads them has an immense amount of knowledge about all parts of the process, and he’s able to spout it out in an interesting way.

We even saw a couple of unfinished Models X on the line, but they were pretty hardcore about photo leaks (I think leaks have been a problem lately), so I didn’t get to capture the hotness. Seeing it in person, even in passing, did reinforce my decision to eventually upgrade to the X, probably not for a couple years. On the way home I had lunch at a fabulous place called “burger.” They have an excellent beer selection, great shakes, and an enormous selection of burgers on the menu. It kind of reminded me of Twisted Root, but it was way harder to make a decision.

When Emily got off work we drove up to the woods so we could see a little nature. One of the Octopus people had recommended a less touristy part of the woods and gave us an address to navigate to. When we finished the 30 minute drive, there was nowhere to park the car. We’d been told to look for a parking lot, but no luck! Driving through the woods was pretty enough. We decided to head straight from there to a Thai place they’d recommended that turned out to be VERY similar to Thai Ocha in Denton. It was great food, but we got full fast. :(

Thank you to all farmers! What would we do without you?

On 22 September 2025, I went on a fairly long drive, hoping to catch some Fall colour before all the leaves fall. I was just a little bit too late to see a great splash of colour, but did see a few remaining patches here and there. About 7 hours of driving, and 388 km.

Will have to add a description tomorrow....

On 22 September, my day was spent driving SW of the city out to the Kananaskis area as far as one of my favourite mountain ranges, then returning home via the same south route and crossing over the highway to just SE of Calgary. Apart from a quick drive south to the Saskatoon Farm with my daughter, this was only the second time I have been out in the month of September (now already 27 September).

Knowing that snow can arrive any time from now on, I really wanted to get out to the mountains one more time. Also, a few days have been messed up, with more to come, having some important things seen to, including a new hot water tank replacing my old one that was leaking. Feels SO good to have hot water instead of warm, plus water pressure! The sewer people needed to come and do a routine check of the sewer system in my home on another day - no choice, everyone had to have this done. I still need to phone a plumber, and an electrician to come and replace all my light fixtures, that have needed replacing for a long, long time. It will feel amazing to have more light, especially during our seven months of dark winter evenings. All of these things have meant moving stuff out of the way and tidying up - the last thing I have felt like doing after a bad head injury six weeks ago!

This most recent drive was along all familiar, but favourite, roads. The weather was good other than being a little bit hazy. The mountain views were my main focus, but I was also lucky to have a few welcome sightings. While in the SW, I happened to come across the unusual leucistic Red-tailed Hawk that I had seen fairly recently. Such a beautiful bird. Also in the SW, I came across a small flock of American Pipits, a species that I had only ever seen maybe two or three times in 20 years. Was happy to see two Bighorn Sheep in Kananaskis. Usually when I see them, there are several more of them together.

Early in my drive, I watched what I guess I could call a "cattle-drive". Usually when I have seen cattle-drives, they were being herded along a main road, but this time they were crossing a huge field. Such a long line of them. When they saw my car, they all headed to where I was pulled over and stood there, curious as usual. I felt bad, wondering if that was an OK stopping place for them, or whether the two cowboys on horseback had intended them to stop elsewhere.

Once I was over the main highway and SE of Calgary, I saw a dark Red-tailed Hawk up in a tree, and a surprise Western Meadowlark. Oh, and I had a couple of wanna-be hitchhikers, too : ) In the SW, a Seven-spotted Ladybug, and in the SE a grasshopper, both of which had landed on my car's windscreen.

I was surprised to find 6 of DC's gourmet food trucks at the National Museum of American History today. The lines were much shorter than usual, especially for the Red Hook Lobster Roll truck, so I finally had one for lunch today. Off to the left are the dozens of hot dog trucks the tourists usually frequent, and I was saddened to see people coming out of the museum, look over the gourmet food trucks and head for the warmed over, boiled in dirty water hot dogs when they could have had interesting, fresh fare. Left to right around the semicircle: Curbside Cupcakes, Fry Captain, Red Hook Lobster Pound, SweetGreen, TaKorean, and On the Fly.

I knew someone could find a use for these things.

At the Mall I kept seeing RED designs, reflections, abstracts but can't use them for my red photo today... Taken yesterday... :D

We had so much stuff, it would have taken two of these.

Smart cart? Smarty carty? The kind of thing you wonder about -- and the kind of thing you take a picture of -- while waiting to be met at the airport after a cross-country flight.

What, no valves! Note the hole where the valve stem should be protruding. Getting air into these tires may yet prove to be rather interesting. No, these are not "no-flat" tires.

I took this photo in case I need to order new tubes at some point. It turns out the tubes (complete with valves) have rotationally slipped inside the wheels (yes, both wheels) making reinflation impossible.

With a set of tire irons in hand, it is now time to dismount the tires from the wheels and see if the tubes are okay. Fortunately they were, and so maybe these wheels will provide another decade of service--doubtful, as rubber has a service life. I may yet fill these with foam if this occurs again this summer.
