A+++
Impactful and Smart! The business owner on the left planted Purple Heart (Tradescanta pallida) just below their street-side signage....clever that the paint color of the lettering matches the leaf!!
Horsetail (Equisetum hyemale) is used as entry way focal points, adding contrast and texture to this sleek condominium. Smartly planted in a contained area! This plant is quite invasive.

And here we are with another Scolari & Final I visit on 12/22/23, this one being #392 in Paso Robles.
This Smart & Final "Extra" is the first Smart & Final to open in a former Scolari's, however Smart & Final took over this Scolari's right away unlike the San Luis Obispo store.
While Scolari's opened this location as a new-build in 2007, also their newest store and last store they ever build, it actually took the spot of an original Scolari's location. Previously, Scolari's built a store at this site in 1976, however was sold to Lucky when they first exited the Central Coast, just for the Scolari family to re-enter the market in the late 80's. When Albertsons merged with Lucky in 1999, this store was one of several store's divested to Ralphs (pre-Kroger) in the Central Coast. Kroger decided to close this Ralphs in 2006, and since Scolari's still owned the property, they decided to tear down the old store and rebuild a new store at the site to their at the time current standards.
After a 4-year run, this Scolari's once again closed along with the rest of their California stores in 2012, and was quickly scooped up by Smart & Final, opening the next year as their first Paso Robles location. A second Smart & Final in Paso opened on the other end of town in a former Haggen/Vons in 2016, one of the 33 former Haggen's they purchased.
When Smart & Final opened this specific store, they walled off part of the store, and that portion is now sub-leased to an AutoZone. The walled off portion is very evident in this store, as it's obvious those who have been in this store as a Scolari's where the store was cut off. Where Scolari's had most of their service departments located is where the walled off portion is now, with that side of the store now having Dairy coolers and the frozen foods departments, as well as the beer, wine and liquor towards the front of the store, however, both entrances to the store remain in the same spot that they were as a Scolari's. The Smart & Final had an operational butcher counter from Scolari's for a while on the left-side of the store where produce is now, which was the only service counter on this side of the store. Smart & Final more recently installed an additional meat cooler in that spot officially blocking off the service counter, for they typically don't run service counters in their store's.
Speaking of Smart & Final's, the "Extra" moniker which is added to their stores is supposed to mean an expanded assortment of groceries, however, it seems almost every Smart & Final store now is a "Extra" store, including this one and the previous one I posted, so I don't know exactly what extra grocery assortment this store offers, as it is still a basic warehouse grocery chain which doesn't offer much, if any, supermarket services, which is why I wonder if the moniker means anything at this point. I find it similar to how Walmart Supercenter at this point just means a normal Walmart, since a supercenter is now their standard store model for every new-build store.
