56053 ‘Sir Morgannwg Ganol/ County of Mid Glamorgan’ heads past the 1898-built Barry Docks Offices with an empty coal train from Barry to Tower colliery.

Even though most Welsh coal mines had closed by 1994, residual coal traffic, particularly serving the power station at Aberthaw generated plenty of rail traffic. On this day (unusually busy) Sunday, Aberthaw received 7 trains: 2 from Tower, 4 from Cwmbargoed and 1 from Jersey Marine.

The impressive building, in the baroque revival style, was built to regulate the vast coal traffic that flowed out of Barry in the early 20th century. Prior to the first world war Barry was the busiest coal port in the world. Over 11 million tonnes of coal per year were being shipped through Barry with more than 18,000 employees working the docks.

The building was in good repair in 1994: 10 years earlier a fire had seriously damaged the structure, and the port owner had recently completed an extensive refurbishment. In 2021, the building houses part of the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

"Good day, sir! Would you like some bread and coffee? The best combination on your walk home, c'mon, rest for awhile." She smiled brightly. As bright as the sun, he thought. Yet, her eyes glistened with unspoken sorrow, he noticed.

"Sure, young lady." he said, gracing her with his old and wise smile. She prepared his drink, along with a hearty bun. He will admit that it did smell tempting, the combination of freshly baked bread and the scent of roasted coffee beans.

Her companion barked happily, running around his leg only to rest next to him and watching him, tongue hanging out all excited for an early morning visitor.

He drank his coffee in silence, enjoyed the bread too and dipped the last piece into the warm liquid. She watched him curiously and happily, not striking conversation and yet there was a comfort in the silence they shared as she tended to the little bakery.

Once he was finished, he asked her how much he owed. "Just another visit tomorrow morning, sir." she smiled.

He nodded, that was fair enough wasn't it? It was time to continue his long journey. He gave her another smile before carrying on his long walk.

Her smile faded slightly as she watched him continue on, a sad look in her eyes for unknown reason, "He looked like he has seen better days, huh?" she said towards her furry friend who had climbed on next to her and gave her a loving lick on her cheek.

Built for Sir Robert Shirley between 1653 and 1655 in Gothic style, the Chapel of Holy Trinity is the estate church at Staunton Harold, where the Shirleys, their retainers and estate workers lived for generations. It is one of the few churches built between the outbreak of the English Civil War and the Restoration period

Thank you to everyone who pauses long enough to look at my photo. Any comments or Faves are very much appreciated.
