Watching the sunset in Sint Maarten / Saint Martin from Maho Beach's Sunset Bar & Grill. I called the rock "Iguana
rock" but I don't know if it survived the hurricane. The gazebo definitely didn't. The Sonesta Maho Resort where the gazebo is received heavy damage from the huricane. They were in the process of repairing or rebuilding it last I checked. This is a great spot to watch the sunset and the ships heading to sea. It was a rainy, dismal day for the main event at the 2004 Heineken Regatta. From our timeshare at Divi Little Bay, we took the short walk up the hill to Fort Amsterdam to watch the race. The turn-around buoy was right here, so we had a great view of the mid-point action.

Waar ik was? Zo ongeveer aan de andere kant van de wereld. Het Caraïbische eiland Sint Maarten (en aan Franse zijde Saint-Martin) om precies te zijn. Ruim twee weken lang genieten in tropische temperaturen; ik kan het iedereen aanraden die de Nederlandse winter even wilt ontvluchten.
Sinds begin januari is het alweer te stil op deze pagina, maar wederom wil ik daar verandering in brengen. Te beginnen met deze foto uit de hoofdstad aan de Nederlandse kant van het eiland, Philipsburg. Palmbomen op het strand, het helderblauwe water en de groene bergen op de achtergrond.

Where I was? Pretty much on the other side of the world. The Caribbean island of Sint Maarten (and Saint-Martin on the French side) to be precise. Enjoying tropical temperatures for over two weeks; I can recommend it to anyone who wants to escape the Dutch winter for a while.
Since the beginning of January it has been too quiet on this page, but once again I want to change that. Starting with this photo from the capital on the Dutch side of the island, Philipsburg. Palm trees on the beach, the clear blue water and the green mountains in the background.

This is the view to the southeast from Oyster Bay on Sint Maarten toward Saint Barthelemy. The sun set behind the mountain to our southwest but still filled the southeast with color for a short while. Sint Maarten, the Dutch side, shares this beautiful Caribbean island with Saint Martin, the French side.

Colorful villas climb up the hill outside Philipsburg, Sint Maarten, which is the Dutch side of this Caribbean island. St. Martin is both French and Dutch and is divided into two distinct geographical zones. However, this territory is unique in that it has no physical border separating the two sides of the island.
Orkaan Irma hield in 2017 flink huis op Sint Maarten, alsmede in het Franse deel Saint-Martin. Er vielen veel slachtoffers en de schade was enorm. In het Nederlandse deel is veel in de jaren erna weer opgebouwd en opgeknapt, maar in het Franse deel is de nasleep van de orkaan nog altijd zichtbaar in het straatbeeld. Ook veel gebouwen zijn nog verlaten.

Hurricane Irma had a major impact on Sint Maarten in 2017, as well as in the French part Saint-Martin. There were many victims and the damage was enormous. In the Dutch part, much has been rebuilt and renovated in the years that followed, but in the French part, the aftermath of the hurricane is still visible in the streets. Many buildings are also still abandoned.
