CAMP HUMPHREYS – “Kimjang” is an event where kimchi, the ubiquitous food in Korean cuisine, is made in preparation for winter. However, making kimchi is a very labor-intensive process so many neighbors divide up the different parts of this process and then make a huge batch for the entire village. In the past, Kimjang was a way to survive the harsh winters and build ties with neighbors.

The Camp Humphreys Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers (BOSS) program and the Mannam Volunteer Association worked together to organize a Kimjang event, Dec. 1, for those who wanted to volunteer making and giving away kimchi.

More than 30 Soldiers and civilians of Humphreys Community took part and experienced making kimchi and shared it with the elderly and underprivileged people of Gaemi Maeul, located on the northwest slope of Mount Inwangsan, in Hongje-dong, Seoul.

“The purpose of our Kimjang event was to share the meaning of love and the true meaning of helping, giving, and sharing,” said Charleen Hull, Mannam’s South Branch team leader. “We wanted to share with the people of Gaemi Village, who are financially struggling and unable to support themselves due to being elderly or physically disabled. Many of the elders live alone and go to the hospital every day. They are unable to cook for themselves and too proud to ask for help.”

Specialist Kareen K. Medeiros, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys and who serves as the Camp Humphreys BOSS President, said “The BOSS program decided to get together with Mannam for this project because I thought it would be a good thing for some of our military personnel to get involved with the Korean community and to give back. In my opinion it (the Kimjang event) is very important. We are here overseas, in a host country and having to serve with the Korean military. I feel it is a wonderful opportunity for our single Soldiers to come and experience what everyday living is like here in Korea and what better way to do that than to see some of the traditions themselves.”

Private Tony Harrington, assigned to 719th Military Intelligence Battalion, came to the event with his friends and enjoyed making kimchi for the very first time.

“The reason I came here is because I met a lot of good friends during the ‘Troops for Trash’ and they talked me into coming and making kimchi,” said Harrington. “This is my first time in Korea. I have only been here for (about a ) month and a half and I find it quite fine. During my stay here I try to learn more about this country and this is my first experience with kimchi. It is worth a try. So I’m having fun and enjoying making it.”

Hong Kong Transport - Buses | All types

The Hong Kong Bus Culture

The number of buses registered + licenced in Hong Kong seems to fluctuate between 18,000 - 22,000 vehicles and presumably new buses registered are offset by old buses being retired or sold over the border in China. (Source - The Transport Department, Hong Kong Government)

Bus services in Hong Kong have to be amongst the best of all major cities in the World.

All major Hong Kong Bus Companies invest heavily and are using mainly brand new double decker buses and all of them are testing and introducing single and double decker 100% electric buses and also hydrogen powered buses for future use.

☛Major Franchised Bus Companies in Hong Kong

Citybus | Cityflyer ✚ Kowloon Motor Bus | KMB ✚ Long Win Motor Bus | LWB ✚ New Lantao Bus | NLB ✚ HZMB ✚ Note : New World First Bus | NWFB merged with Citybus in 2022

☛Non - Franchised Public Bus Services using double decker and single decker buses (feeder services)

Mass Transit Railway | MTR ✚ DBTS - Lantau Island ✚ Park Island Transport Co. Ltd.

☛All Major Franchised Public Minibus Services (PLB) seating 16 or 19 people

Franchised and Non Franchised Public Light Bus Red Top ✚ Franchised Public Light Bus Green Top

☛Privately Owned Buses

Toyota seems to be the preferred brand for privately owned small and medium sized buses and are used for the following purposes

Public and Private Rehab Buses ✚ Commercial Building Buses ✚ Resident Services Buses ✚ Travel and Tour Buses ✚ Contract Hire ✚ School Buses ✚ Hotel Buses ✚ Misc. Buses for any type of charter | hire too numerous to mention including cross border buses.

One of the largest privately owned companies is Kwoon Chung Bus Company who also offer Non Franchised and Franchised Bus Services through it‛s subsidiary New Lantao Bus

☛Many Hong Kong Government Departments have a fleet of buses but for some reason also contract hire from Private Bus Companies on an “as needed” basis.

Any Government OWNED and operated vehicle in this section (such as Correctional Services Buses, Police Buses etc ) have a licence plate starting AM and any Chinese Military Vehicle has a licence plate starting ZG and naturally some of these vehicles have personalized licence plates which they buy at Government Auction!

Day 29

A somewhat "damaged" Silver Maple leaf from a tree in Bowness Park. I'm not sure why pretty well every single leaf was badly damaged - maybe from hail? A pity, as this is the only tree of its kind in Calgary, if I remember correctly. It's so exciting to see real, RED Maple leaves! Nancy, I think you must have picked the only perfect leaf on the whole tree, LOL!

Sundial Bridge shows how much some imagination can accomplish. Its VERY convenient to be able to cross the river here, otherwise you have a long way to go to get around. But the shadow of a conventional bridge spooks the salmon and prevents a portion from getting further upstream to spawn. So the bridge has a glass treadway, allowing light through.

Its also single tower, with cable stays as you can see. As long as it was a single tower, that tower was arranged to function as the gnomon of a sundial - the shadow of the tower tells the time. Is that cool or what?

But wait, one MORE cool thing - the very long, steel, cables are perfect for some shade-tree physics: You can put your ear right on the cable, and then tap it with your finger, key fob, little plastic hammer. The sound of the impact goes up the wire to the tower and bounced back. It also changes pitch - it gets lower. The whole effect is not unlike the beam-of-something blasters in the first Star Wars movie... makes you wonder.

My theory on why the sound gets lower is that the vibration of the impact causes the steel cable to un-twist, just slightly, reducing the tension and lowering the pitch. This suggests some obvious experiments, none of which I've done yet...

Shapla, 25, is a sex worker at Baniashanta brothel at Dacoope upazila in Khulna. Her lack of income began from the coronavirus outbreak in March. The Covid-19 pandemic forced her out of work for seven months. Lack of income has caused her debts to rise to Tk 30,000, especially for rent and groceries. She cannot give her landlord a proper estimate as to when she can repay all her due rent. Cyclone Amphan devastated her home, especially the base and exterior of her home, causing her furniture and other belongings to perish in the river. She has suffered ever since, as she can barely collect a handful of rice on due from the grocer, forcing her to often make do with a single meal of rice and mashed potatoes a days. She received cash support from UN Women as a victim of Cyclone Amphan, which she used to purchase household essentials, pay off some of her debts and visit the doctor. She hopes to purchase a sewing machine, once she is able to repay all her debts and the situation stabilizes, as she has working knowledge on how to sew.

The Peter Iredale, the iconic shipwreck, still has its remains along the northern Oregon Coast. It ran aground in 1906 and this is all that is left. My feeling is it will be completely gone sometime in the next twenty years but it has it's own noble beauty especially from above.
