Sir Stamford Raffles Founder of Singapore

This original dark bronze statue was sculpted by renowned English sculptor and poet Thomas Woolner, it was unveiled on Jubilee Day on 27 June 1887.

The status was transferred from Empress Place to the Victoria Memorial Hall ( present location) in 1972 on the 150th anniversary of Singapore's founding.

Trivia buffs will love some of the stories behind the Raffles Statue. For one, it was nicknamed orang besi (“iron man” in Malay) when it was first unveiled.

Another quirky fact is that the statue was relocated from its original site at the Padang to Empress Place in 1919. It was often hit by flying footballs during games, and early Padang spectators liked sitting at its base for a good view.

During the Japanese Occupation, the statue was moved to Syonan Museum (the former Raffles Museum, now National Museum Singapore), and it was widely believed that the Japanese had intended for it to be melted for its bronze. It was reinstalled at Empress Place in 1946.

Today, the statue is a national icon and remains a symbol of modern Singapore.

Forbidden City by Indo Chine

Consistently rated among the preeminent establishments at Singapore’s mega-popular Clarke Quay nightlife precinct, The Forbidden City has for years been attracting crowds of discerning diners and party goers with its multi-faceted offerings. Occupying the majestic Singapore waterfront building- The River House- which has been listed as World Heritage Site by UNESCO- the building was originally a 19th Century river front godown, later converted into the palatial residence of a wealthy trader. Operated by Singapore’s renowned IndoChine Group, the building has, while maintaining its historic structure and facade, been extensively re-modelled internally into a collection of stylish restaurants, bars and nightclubs.

Measuring between 25 and 50 metres tall, these iconic tree-like vertical gardens are designed with large canopies that provide shade in the day and come alive with an exhilarating display of light and sound at night.

Over 162,900 plants comprising more than 200 species and varieties of bromeliads, orchids, ferns and tropical flowering climbers have been planted on the 18 Supertrees.

Examples of some of the species include the Tillandsia stricta from Brazil, Tillandsia fasciculate from Panama, Cattleya maxima from Ecuador, and Pseudorhipsalis from Costa Rica.

The Supertrees have different planting schemes in various colours ranging from warm tones like reds, browns, orange and yellows, to cooler hues like silver and pink.

The plants were chosen based on the following considerations:

- Suitability for vertical planting

- Lightweight and hardy

- Soil-less

- Ease of maintanence

- Suitability for Singapore’s climate

- Not commonly found in Singapore

- High visual interest

Hello to everyone.

Just returned last night from a beautiful trip to Singapore and Bali. This is one of the first photos I processed.

My hometown, Miami, has a beautiful skyline. However, I have to give kudos to Singapore. It has evolved since my wife and I visited in the year 2000. Singapore is now, without a doubt, one of the most spectacular and photographic Metropolis in the world. This shot was taken from one of several pull outs on the walking bridge to the Marina Bay Sands Casino & Resort. I am still in awe at the beauty I witnessed. My only regret is that I did not have my Canon EOS 5D which would have done wonders reducing the noise due to the decreasing daylight. Still love this shot though. Hope everyone enjoys!

During colonial times Singapore was segregated into ethnic districts by the town planners of that era. The Arab Street area was designated as a residential district for Singapore’s diverse Muslim population, primarily constituting people of Middle Eastern, Indian, Malay, Bugis, and Javanese descent.

However, the entrepreneurial tendencies of the residents soon turned it into a thriving trading center that attracted residents from Singapore’s other ethnicities, and became the main shopping area doing business in textiles, spices, furniture, handicrafts, etc. from the rows of shop houses that have been preserved and still line the streets today in this historical district.

Although Arab Street has retained its Middle Eastern character until today with Sultan Mosque, the largest mosque in Singapore, dominating the architectural landscape, it has nevertheless become a melting pot of Singapore’s ethnicities with shops selling everything from oriental rugs to Chinese furniture, ethnic jewelry, clothes, perfumes, etc. In addition to retail outlets, the area is abundantly populated with bars, cafés, eateries, and restaurants serving Indian, Malay, Middle Eastern, and Western dishes.

The Lower Peirce Reservoir is Singapore's second-oldest reservoir. This photograph was taken in March at dusk with slight breeze, with contrasting cloud formations and reflections.

This small reservoir has paved paths with spots for sunset views, including the pavilion that provides a nice feature that contrasts well with the vegetation around the reservoir. The clouds and cloudlets were variously illuminated by the set sun, and the captivating cloud formations contrasted with the pavilion and link bridge.

Gardens by the Bay is a nature park spanning 101 hectares (250 acres) of reclaimed land in the Central Region of Singapore, adjacent to the Marina Reservoir. The largest of the gardens is Bay South Garden at 54 hectares (130 acres). Its Flower Dome is the largest glass greenhouse in the world.

Gardens by the Bay is part of the nation's plans to transform its "Garden City" to a "City in a Garden", with the aim of raising the quality of life by enhancing greenery and flora in the city. First announced by the Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong, at the National Day Rally in 2005, Gardens by the Bay was intended to be Singapore's premier urban outdoor recreation space, and a national icon.

Being one of the popular tourist attractions in Singapore, the park received 6.4 million visitors in 2014, while topping its 20 millionth visitor mark in November 2015.

The Sri Mariamman Temple is Singapore's oldest Hindu temple.

It is built in the South Indian architecture| style.

Due to its architectural and historical significance, the temple has been gazetted as a National Monument. Historically, the temple was the registry of Hindu marriages. At that time, only the priest of the Sri Mariamman Temple was authorized to solemnize Hindu marriages in Singapore.
