The Qingming Festival (simplified Chinese: 清明节; traditional Chinese: 清明節; pinyin: Qīngmíng Jié; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Chheng-bêng-cheh or Chhiⁿ-miâ-choeh, Ching Ming Festival in Hong Kong, Vietnamese: Tết Thanh Minh), Pure Brightness Festival or Clear Bright Festival, Ancestors Day or Tomb Sweeping Day is a traditional Chinese festival on the 104th day after the winter solstice (or the 15th day from the Spring Equinox), usually occurring around April 5 of the Gregorian calendar (see Chinese calendar). Astronomically it is also a solar term (See Qingming). The Qingming festival falls on the first day of the fifth solar term, named Qingming. Its name denotes a time for people to go outside and enjoy the greenery of springtime (踏青 Tàqīng, "treading on the greenery") and tend to the graves of departed ones.

Qingming has been regularly observed as a statutory public holiday in Taiwan and in the Chinese jurisdictions of Hong Kong and Macau. Its observance was reinstated as a nation wide public holiday in mainland China in 2008.

"Omg! Is that all of your hair?"

- Brejanae Malone

For this stage of our Race Card Project, our goal was to identify a series of six-word essays that stood out to us. Along with the six-word essays, there needed to be well-captured portraits of the individuals who made the essays. Lastly, the chosen portraits needed to be simplified in color and shape to build the foundation for the typographic portraits.

This particular race card I could identify with in many ways. I chose this card not only because I could relate to the essay, but because I thought the original image was full of interesting shapes and was different from my other choices of portraits in angle and subject features. For this portrait, when simplifying, I wanted to preserve the hair as much as possibly because that's a large focus of the subject's essay, so the shapes in the hair were the most important to me. I was able to hold on to a good amount of facial expression and small detail, such as the nose ring, the teeth, and the shadows on the face.

This is a photo of a shadow of a painted wood chip, the composition it is showing is simplify, because I cut out other unneeded things in the background to mostly focus on the chip and it's shadow. What I dislike about this photo was that it was hard to get just the shadow of the wood chip without getting a shadow from the things around it, making it distracting.

I wish I had more props on the table... I like that this picture is nice and neat though.
