Also sometimes known as the Star Magnolia. A small tree or shrub that is native to Japan that will flower in early spring before the leaf's open.
At Joshua Tree Park, they are found in abundance. The valley is called Yucca valley after it. In the background are million year old rocky outcrops that are really fascinating.
Three Hakuba mountains of Hakuba-yari, Shakushi, and Shirouma or Hakuba across the shrub of Kurobe (Japanese thuja, thuja standishii), an evergreen coniferous species in the cypress family. It is usually a tall tree but is dwarfed here due to a poor soil condition.
The last days on an Indian summer are behind us now were I live as the days draw in sooner and there is a chill in the air. The roses have thrown their last blooms for the season, yet just as they stop, my camellia sasanquas start, so I have new blooms to take pleasure in photographing and sharing with you!
As well as a camellia hedge in my rear garden, I also have a shorter hedge in my front garden that grows underneath the bay windows. There are several specimens there including a a hybrid between the warm-climate scented sasanqua and cooler-climate unscented japonica camellia. It is called "Hiryu" and as a hybrid it is neither sasanqua nor japonica, but a hiemalis.
With elegant deep rosy red blended with darker red at the edges, the "Hiryu" hiemalis as a small evergreen shrub that grows to around two metres in height with beautiful displays of flowers in autumn and early winter. It is ideal as a specimen tree on its own or in groups with other Camellias. It can be used as a hedge or screen and espalier.

Eriostemon australasius commonly known as pink wax flower is a plant in the citrus family Rutaceae and is endemic to eastern Australia. It is an erect, bushy shrub with narrow oblong leaves, and pink flowers with five petals in late winter and early spring. Eriostemon australasius is an erect, bushy shrub which grows to a height of 1–2 m. It has simple leaves that are narrow oblong in shape, 20–80 millimetres long, 8–14 millimetres long and are covered with tiny star-like hairs when young, although the hairs may only be visible with a magnifying glass. The flowers are arranged singly in leaf axils, mostly near the ends of the branches, on a stalk 4–12 millimetres long. At the base of each flower are five to twelve sepal-like bracteoles. There are five pink to reddish petals which are about 18 millimetres long and are covered with similar hairs to those on the leaves, but become smooth with maturity. Flowering occurs in late winter and early spring. Pink wax flower grows in heathland and dry eucalyptus woodlands from Lake Conjola on the New South Wales south coast northwards along the coast to Fraser Island in Queensland. 40003
I planted it years ago as a little offspring, never knowing the name. It grew to a shrub which blooms every springtime in out courtyard.

Winterberry is a woody shrub and a member of the Holly family. It is native to east North America and female plants produce abundant bright red berries in the autumn.
Winterberry is one of several Holly species that are deciduous (lose their leaves before winter). The berries represent an important food source for birds in the winter months.

The exceptional warm weather that has been experienced in the UK recently has certainly advanced the colours found in the garden.
The purple foxglove contrasting beautifully against the orange lilies and a yellow shrub.
Laurel is a vigorous shrub that is often used to provide garden screening, The leaves and berries are very poisonous.
That is why the wise man is invariably called the fool :-)

On the cliff walk at Stackpole the sheep roam about and, inevitably, their fleece gets caught on the bushes. There were no clouds to define the sky just milky sheet cloud unfortunately hence the white out sky. Hey Ho, you can't win the all.

In the stunning Butchart Gardens, near Victoria, British Columbia.
The Gardens are over 100 years old and occupy 22 hectares (55 acres). Originally a limestone quarry that supplied a local cement works, the owners (Butchart family) decided to beautify the worked-out area. Designated a National Historic Site of Canada, almost one million people visit it annually.
The flowering quince made it through sleet & snow flurries, high winds and below freezing temps. One of the joys of Winter. And - our Yellow-throated warbler is still here - this is Day 26!
Rhododendron is a genus of shrubs and small to (rarely) large trees, the smallest species, R. cespitosum of New Guinea, growing to 10–100 cm (4–40 in) tall, and the largest, R. protistum var. giganteum, reported to 30 m (100 ft) tall.
The flowering quince shrubs are covered in pink buds and a few open blossoms in spite of colder temps. We're heading to the low 20's tonight ... that's a big temperature dive and even the quince won't like it. But for now ...
Rare bird update: the Yellow-throated warbler is still here! Hope he eats a lot today so he'll make it through tonight.
