The world's only group of three supertalls.
😁 I must have a gazillion of these shots, but the view is fascinating...

Not everywhere Shanghai is modern, bright and shiny...
This is a 180° panorama of Kongjia Nong (Kongjia Alley, 孔家弄), one of the many narrow alleys that make up the core of the old Shanghai.
This area around Laoximen (老西门) has it's own charm, though I recommend to visit it only if you are good at orientation without any maps, because many of these tiny alleys are not even on the Chinese maps - and it's a maze.
Unfortunately much of this will fall victim to urban redevelopment in the very near future.

Small and cute figurines, about 5 cm (2 inches) tall. Shop display in Tianzifang.
Tianzifang (Chin: 田子坊): this is an area of small narrow alleys or "nong" (弄) which has been redeveloped and now features arts shops, restaurants and bars and also enough souvenir shops to make it a one-stop shopping location on the hunt for the "typical" Chinese souvenir. Get hungry while souvenir hunting? 10 different countries feature their respective national cuisine...

Candles in the Zen Buddhist temple (菩提禅寺) in Anting.
Anting is a town far in the outskirts of Shanghai, nearly in neighbouring Jiangsu Province. The home town of Shanghai Volkswagen.

Shanghai's main tourist trap revisited. The Yu Yuan area is Shanghai's "China cliche" area. Beautifully illuminated real (and many fake) historic buildings. Crowded at all times....
"Tourist Trap": This area around the historic Yu Garden (豫园 Yu Yuan) and the City God Temple (城隍庙 Chenghuangmiao) is made up as a souvenir shopping district especially for tourists.
Apart from the 450 years old Yu Garden itself and the City God Temple the 3 main attractions are the Hu Xin Ting Teahouse (湖心亭), the Nine Bends Bridge (九曲桥 Jiuqu Qiao) and the Lü Bo Lang Restaurant (绿波廊, remark: you can get really excellent fried snake there...😋) - the latter also serves as venue for state dinners, e.g. during the 2001 APEC summit Bill Clinton was invited there.
The Hu Xin Ting Teahouse (left center, with the staircase towards the lake) is located in the center of a small lake and can only be reached via the Nine Bends Bridge - the name of the Teahouse means (literally translated): "Lake Heart Pavillion".

Yuck! An abattoir? Read on!
Well, actually the "1933" complex is the fomer Municipal Slaughterhouse from colonial times. Built in 1933 out of reinforced concrete by British architect C.H. Stableford in cooperation with others.
After an intermediate career as medicine factory, and much disrepair and decay, now the building is restored as an arts and restaurant center. And here you can see the roof of this building.
Located in Hongkou, No. 10 Shajing Road (上海1933老场坊,虹口区沙泾路10号)
It's a complex structure featuring an outer building in an about square footprint and an inner round core building, multiple levels, all interconnected by an amazing maze of spiral and straight staircases, ramps and walkways.

The Maison Camus does not exist anymore... - the Shanghai Centre (上海商城), of which the Portman is the main tenant, is/was undergoing renovation.

Metro City (美罗城) on the left with its iconic glass ball facade and Taipingyang Digital Plaza (Phase II, 太平洋数码二期) are / were two iconic buildings in the Xujiahui shopping area.
And why "were" above?
Answer: The right building, Taipingyang Digital Plaza Phase II, has been demolished in 2016 and is gone now. Therefore this shot has some historical value 😇.
Also: this was taken from the grand staircase of the Grand Gateway Mall - in the meanwhile that staircase was also removed and is replaced by a massive lobby structure.
Several long exposures combined into one image, due to the time the shot was taken traffic was not that busy...

Shanghai Xupu Bridge (徐浦大桥) the southernmost of Shanghai's huge bridges. A mini-panorama stitched from 2 shots, taken from the balcony of the apartment I was living at that time. The distance to the bridge is roughly 6,000 metres.
This shot would be impossible to do nowadays (2024), as more highrise apartment towers have been built in the line of sight during the past 19 years - these buildings block the view of the entire bridge, just the tops of the pylons could be seen.
Quite obviously another reactivated old shot, added some PP before republishing.

Fangbang Road (方浜路) is a narrow road in Huangpu District. Parts of the street in the vicinity of Yu Yuan are developed for tourism as "Shanghai Old Street" (上海老街). These parts start behind this gate (east), at the intersection of Central Fangbang Road and Henan South Road (河南南路).
The picture was taken in 2005 and the abundance of bicycles in the picture seems to fulfill a China-stereotype. Actually the road was crowded with cars - check the parallel shot in the albums. You have to wait some time to shoot the "expected" image...

Car ferry 兴信 (Xing Xin) crossing the Yangzi River towards Chongming Island. These Ferries are quite slow, about 20 km/h (11 knots) only.
Click here to see a high speed ferry on the same route.
Taken while doing a dead cheap 2-hour Yangzi River cruise using one of these slow ferries (total cost, ferry only: 24 CNY, about 3 EUR or 3.50 USD) with the purpose to take some ship photos on the way.
