An after midnight panorama taken at a (at daytime) rather busy intersection of 5 roads:

淮海中路 Huaihai Middle Road

武康路 Wukang Road

兴国路 Xingguo Road

余庆路 Yuqing Road

天平路 Tianping Road

This is from the end of Wukang Road, corner to Xingguo Road, horizontal field of view is about 180°. Located at the border of Changning District (长宁区) and Xuhui District (徐汇区).

The building in the center is a famous apartment block in the former French Concession, at colonial times named "Normandie Apartments", nowadays it is mainly known as 武康大楼 "Wukang Mansion" resp. "Wukang Building" - Shanghai's "Flatiron".

And sorry, due to flickr's inability to properly save local language tags since late Sept. 2022 and no fix in sight (no UTF-8 support in tags, it appears only characters from the stone-age "Code Page 437" work correctly), the tags are incomplete - most Chinese tags do cause flickr's tag parser to create gibberish in the following tags.

And sorry, due to flickr's inability to properly save local language tags since late Sept. 2022 and no fix in sight (no UTF-8 support in tags, it appears only characters from the stone-age "Code Page 437" work correctly), the tags are incomplete - I had to omit some tags, because the 场 character in IAPM广场 and 上海环贸广场 causes flickr's tag parser to create gibberish in all following tags.

The "Nanshi Qu" assigned by flickr as location name is also wrong, a long standing issue with flickr's trashy location database.

Candles in the Zen (Chan) Buddhist temple (菩提禅寺) in Anting.

The temple is dedicated to the Chan (禅) School of Buddhism, the mainstream of Buddhism in China..

Anting is a town far in the outskirts of Shanghai, nearly in neighbouring Jiangsu Province. The home town of Shanghai Volkswagen.

Small and cute figurines, about 5 cm (2 inches) tall. Shop display in Tianzifang.

Tianzifang (Chin: 田子坊): this is an area of small narrow alleys or "nong" (弄) which has been redeveloped and now features arts shops, restaurants and bars and also enough souvenir shops to make it a one-stop shopping location on the hunt for the "typical" Chinese souvenir. Get hungry while souvenir hunting? 10 different countries feature their respective national cuisine...

Shanghai's main tourist trap revisited. The Yu Yuan area is Shanghai's "China cliche" area. Beautifully illuminated real (and many fake) historic buildings. Crowded at all times....

"Tourist Trap": This area around the historic Yu Garden (豫园 Yu Yuan) and the City God Temple (城隍庙 Chenghuangmiao) is made up as a souvenir shopping district especially for tourists.

Apart from the 450 years old Yu Garden itself and the City God Temple the 3 main attractions are the Hu Xin Ting Teahouse (湖心亭), the Nine Bends Bridge (九曲桥 Jiuqu Qiao) and the Lü Bo Lang Restaurant (绿波廊, remark: you can get really excellent fried snake there...😋) - the latter also serves as venue for state dinners, e.g. during the 2001 APEC summit Bill Clinton was invited there.

The Hu Xin Ting Teahouse (left center, with the staircase towards the lake) is located in the center of a small lake and can only be reached via the Nine Bends Bridge - the name of the Teahouse means (literally translated): "Lake Heart Pavillion".

Roadside snippet. At the time the shot was taken (April 2005), this area was already scheduled for redevelopment - but then I've heard it still looks same... (Shanghai, Luwan District, Chongde Road - 上海, 卢湾区, 崇德路).

Seen on Fahuazhen Road (法华镇路).

The header "回收" on the broken plywood poster means roughly recycling or recover.

But, dirty scooters are not on the list below that header, telling what items are accepted...

Maybe its the scooter of the trash collector...

The tower features in total 11 spheres in various sizes. The biggest sphere is 50 meters in diameter with an open air observation deck 90 meters above ground level.

And the muscle powered vehicle in front is just my bike...😁

This old steam locomotive was placed there as memorial to the time when the Xuhui riverside promenade and park (徐汇滨江公园) used to be a busy warehousing and cargo area.

The locomotive was made in 1987 by the Datong Locomotive Works (大同机车工厂). It is a 2-8-2 "JS" (建设, Jianshe = Construction), in the revised "B" specification, build no. 8145.

Of the "JS" in total 1,916 units were made in two production runs (not only at Datong), from 1957-1965 and again 1981 until the final end of production in 1988/9.

Detail of the Exhibition Center (展览中心). Built after the revolution with Russian help (one can see this from the architectural style). Located on Yan An Road (延安路). Used for art exhibitions, trade fairs are held at the new Pudong Exhibition Center (aka EXPO center, though it has nothing to do with the EXPO 2010).

Car ferry 兴信 (Xing Xin) crossing the Yangzi River towards Chongming Island. These Ferries are quite slow, about 20 km/h (11 knots) only.

Click here to see a high speed ferry on the same route.

Taken while doing a dead cheap 2-hour Yangzi River cruise using one of these slow ferries (total cost, ferry only: 24 CNY, about 3 EUR or 3.50 USD) with the purpose to take some ship photos on the way.

Escheresque escalators.

The CITIC Square shopping mall (中信泰富廣場) on Shanghai's Nanjing Road West has mazes of polished steel escalators on both ends.

Looking upwards from the basement level - the reflections in the steel make this appear like something designed by M.C. Escher.

A tourist boat cruising through Shanghai's riverfront.

Back to 2009 for this one. View out of the hotel window.

This photograph shows some of the tallest buildings in the Pudong financial district of Shanghai. In ths photo there is the Shanghai Tower, the Shanghai World Financial Centre and the Jin Mao Tower. The photo uses a worms eye view, and to acheive a more dynamic look I have used kinetic light painting. The photo is taken with a single frame, which starts of with a short camera rotation of around 2 seconds and finishes with a fixed position of around 18 seconds. The single exposure length was 20 seconds.
