Denis Island, Seychelles

One of 12 endemic species in the Seychelles and probably the easiest to find and photograph occurring on all of the islands we visited.

The Seychelles skink is a very adaptable species, able to utilise the many habitats available on the Seychelles ...

The Seychelles skink is endemic to the Seychelles where it is found on islands of Mahé (and nearby islets), Silhouette, Praslin, North, Aride, Cousin, Cousine, Curieuse, La Digue, Grande Soeur, Petite Soeur, Félicité, Frégate and some other islands. Skinks are similar in appearance to other lizards but lack necks and have long tails that are easily shed.

Seychelles - Africa

Denis Island, Seychelles.

Once considered to be the rarest bird in the world - in the late 20th Century just 15 individuals remained, all on Frégate Island. Conservation efforts and translocations to create new populations (including to Denis in 2008) have seen numbers grow to around 300 birds across 5 islands, but it remains one of the rarest birds in the world.

Most have multiple brightly coloured leg rings for individual identification but reduced monitoring during the pandemic means this is one of a few to have escaped the ringers (making this bird rarer still).

Cousin Island, Seychelles

Cousin Island Special Reserve was established in 1968 to protect the last remaining 26 Seychelles Warblers that survived in a small patch of Mangrove on the island. Following successful conservation efforts including the re-establishment of native forest and translocations to other islands, the total population of Seychelles Warblers is today around 3,300 birds.

Cousin Island, Seychelles

The endemic Fody does not do well where introduced rats are present but successful conservation efforts on Cousin and translocations to other predator free islands have increased numbers and there are now over 3,000 birds, with thriving populations on 6 islands. The Seychelles Fody mainly eats seeds, fruit and insects but will predate Fairy Tern eggs, knocking them to the ground if the adult is disturbed.
