Hooded Warbler (Setophaga citrina) is a small, yellow warbler that habitually flashes its white outer tail feathers. Males have distinctive black hood with yellow face; females duller with only a shadow of hood (some lack it completely). Most similar to Wilson's Warbler; always look for white in the tail on Hooded.

See in black

I believe that this is the same friendly yellow-throated warbler that has been visiting for a few years in a row during migration season. I am only guessing that because there is never more than one.

I certainly would not object if he wanted to bring some friends like the pine warblers do. After all, someone needs to eat the abundance of peanuts that I set out for the birds.

I named this little one Peanut long ago because he doesn't allow any other bird to come between him and the peanuts. For instance, if Phil the red-bellied woodpecker, is enjoying the peanut station and Peanut wants a peanut, Peanut is going to get a peanut. Yes, this little, tiny guy swoops in and takes over the feeding station.

Other than peanuts, I have seen him eat small seeds from air plants. But I know that he is truly here for the insects, especially the caterpillars.

Have a wonderful day.

First Warbler of the season. Yellow Warblers are very common summer residents here. At this time, the males are on territory, and belting out their songs to establish a nesting space and attract a female.

Peanuts are a favorite treat for this friendly little warbler. I am so thrilled that he found my yard and chooses to visit throughout the day during his winter stay.

In this image I had just placed peanuts on an oak stump and went to sit on the swing under oak tree number three. Peanut (Yellow-throated warbler) zipped on over to get his favorite treat before I could even get seated.

I hope your day is filled with joy. Happy snapping.

The Blackburnian Warbler is a small New World warbler. They breed in eastern North America, from southern Canada, westwards to the southern Canadian Prairies, the Great Lakes region and New England, to North Carolina.

Blackburnian Warblers are migratory, wintering in southern Central America and in South America. These birds were named after Anna Blackburne, an English botanist.

A Yellow Warbler in full song at Greenhorn Gulch near Ketchum, Idaho

Pine warblers, Setophaga pinus, stands out for two reasons: its name fits perfectly with its favorite habitat, and it’s one of the few warblers that can be found year-round throughout the state.

And one more thing: Florida even has its own pine warbler subspecies.

Pine warblers are fairly large as warblers go, and are found throughout most of the eastern United States at one time or another. It is a migratory bird, but it also has a substantial stay-at-home population concentrated in the southeastern U.S., including Florida. If you look at range maps for pine warblers you’ll see the year-round territory roughly corresponds to places where great long leaf pine forests once dominated the landscape.

Their range includes most of the eastern U.S. and adjacent parts of southern Canada. In the north, pine warblers are migratory, making the jaunt south in late summer and early fall, heading back north in early spring. Florida has both a resident population and a winter population. Residents are divided into two subspecies, S p pinus, found in the Panhandle, and S p Florida, found in the Peninsula. Confirmed sightings or probable sightings of nesting pine warblers have been found in every Florida county save Broward, according to a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission survey done in 2003.

Migrators arrive in September through November and head north in March. Breeding season for resident pine warblers begins in late March. Florida is as far south as pine warblers migrate, which also distinguishes them from many other warbler species.

Another one of my Yard birds. Polk County, Florida.
