Marktown is a small Garden City Movement community set amongst steel rolling mills and the BP-Amoco refinery in Gary, Indiana, USA. Built to a high standard and incorporating a lot of Arts & Crafts detail in the 1920s, this community is now under severe threat.
Amoco would like to buy up all the houses and demolish them to make way for a car park. The local Mayor suspects that is because their refinery has a poor safety record and they don't want to be sued by Marktown residents when it finally goes bang! So buildings are left to decay until demolition is the only option. Many have already gone, reduced to open patches of dirt between the neat rows of houses.
But this community is strong and is fighting for it's future with a Save Marktown campaign. Already it has been added to the national Register of Historic Places - but that only gives protection from Federal development. It is such a shame - these were quality brick-built structures with plenty of charm and character. Walking around central Chicago, there are plenty of guys who could use somewhere to live and a job in the steel mill.

I went back to the badlands today to wander around a mass kill area of fossilized tortoises. There are hundreds of them visible above ground. I am assuming that they were killed about 30 million years ago.
The area where they are exposed if very far from any road and I had to walk a great distance to get to them. But, I made it once again and took some nice photos...I think. I walked many miles and took my time along the way to photo just about anything I found of interest.
I arrived here a little after 6am and it was chilly and the sky was overcast. The temperature was 27F, but by the time I finished 3 hours later it had warmed up to 31F. At least I didn't forget to wear my gloves this time.

Hans Wegner Heart dining set designed in 1952. Produced by Fritz Hansen, Denmark.
This mother - daughter pair is a near matched set. You can tell the mother is older by her longer nose and fluffier tail. Otherwise, their body sizes are similar (the kit is probably about 3/4 grown). Their mirrored expressions are especially endearing, as they pause to look down the hill at people on the suburban sidewalk below. Red fox (Vulpes vulpes)
I had nothing to do with this photo, the costumes, or those particular props in this shot, but I did paint the set in the background. It was quite a process. We had hundreds of panels layed down on the paint floor at the New Orleans Opera and we systematically applied each layer. The "Twelve Step" application included various applications of paint, joint compound, foam coat, and cheese cloth.
