The pharmacy at St Theresa’s gives out medications to patients. Yorum Siame, Advocacy specialist at Christian Aid partner CHAZ, explains the problems some patients have in accessing medications.

“Even though people may have paid for health insurance, drugs are not always available in the hospitals and clinics. So they might be given a prescription and have to go to a pharmacy, which will make them pay for the medication. So they’ve paid twice for the service”

Edson Timothy Mphande is a patient at St Theresa's mission hospital in Ibenga. After falling ill in November 2011 with stomach swelling and constipation, he went to his local government hospital. Unfortunately his appointment was cancelled, not once but 3 times. Eventually he was told that there were too many patients, and his name had been cut from the list. Following an emergency appointment, his doctor advised him to go to St Theresa’s, which is supported by Christian Aid partner CHAZ.

“The problem is there are too many people and too few hospitals” says Edson. “In other hospitals, doctors don’t have 30 minutes to examine you. But here they do… I’ve loved the service here”.
