I love colour and all things iridescent (which some of you may know), so when I chose this spectacle frame, I didn't pick a model from the Oakley HSTN collection of prescription glasses, but one from the "HSTN Metal" sunglasses collection. Why? Because the temples are constructed with a mix of semi-translucent/clear/matte plastic and anodised, colourful metal parts (whereas the prescription frames are entirely made of plastic or acetate and therefore are easier to adjust). The metal parts of my glasses' temples are pretty stiff and not as comfy as the acetate would have been, but who cares if there are shimmering parts? Not me ;)

The original frame came with rather flashy, mirrored glasses ("Prizm Violet"), which my optician replaced with self-tinting lenses according to my prescription. And since I also have other pairs of glasses, the slight discomfort of this particular frame doesn't matter much at all.

A classic: I took a few first shots, thought "This is nice, maybe I should take a look at the images first," and then simply continued taking photos with differently coloured smiley beads, from different angles (and yes, that short, golden-glittery ribbon was hard to handle because it kept twisting) – of course without taking a look first. And then I ended up using one of the first photos anyway. Duh. Actually, the very first set of (focus-stacked) photos was that of an autumn leaf. It turned out very nice, and I will also upload it this week because it's too nice not to. I will explain on Wednesday why I didn't pick it for our "Dutch Angle" theme.

Back to the smiley: The golden-glittery ribbon that once belonged to a small present bag originally was one part of my second idea for last Monday's "Cogwheel". Just for fun, I had placed the plastic cogs on the ribbon and I liked the bokeh the quite roughly woven fabric created. But it somehow didn't make much sense to put cogs on a glitter ribbon except that it looked nice, and since the theme's focus was on the cogs, not on bokeh, I discarded the idea for later. And "later" already happened to be yesterday. So does it make sense to put a smiley bead on a golden ribbon? No, but it looks nice.

For the smiley photo, I used the Laowa Ultra Macro lens because it creates such nice bokeh and because I only needed a single shot for this idea anyway. To enhance the bokeh, I used the small gold-coated cardboard cake board that I held above the ribbon (illuminated by a single LED lamp from the right). I also used an LED lamp from the left, set to a lower angle, to illuminate the smiley bead. I had considered backlight (which I had used for the leaf) but it took away contrast from the semi-translucent bead, so I stuck to my two light sources.

Processing: I did the basics in DXO PhotoLab 8 and Lightroom and did some minor enhancements in Color Efex such as "Brilliance and Warmth" and "Detail Extractor" for some parts of the bokeh.

Found at Mayville Ledge Beech-Maple Woods SNA in east-central Wisconsin. Dodge County, Wisconsin, USA.

Found in mixed hardwood forest. Found on the trunk of a dead fallen debarked hardwood tree. I was checking some Stemonitis clusters growing on the tree for slime mold beetles, when this beauty ambled up and started chomping on the blackened tips of this clump. While looking through the viewfinder and taking shots I could actually see, through its semitranslucent head, chunks of spores going down it's 'throat'.

There's a cute little globular springtail, possibly Sminthurinus quadrimaculatus, at base of slime mold.

On the theme of travelling and being hungry for new experiences: you want to see new places and meet the people who live there while avoiding being influenced by other travellers' opinions (or at least I do). That way you are open to all sorts of possibilities, which brings me to Yamaguchi city.

My problem with it, through no fault of its own, is that it has appeared on the New York Times' "52 places to visit in 2024" list (which, annoyingly, I only discovered after I had arranged the visit). The article nominated the city for, among other things, its five-story pagoda, its youthful coffee entrepreneurs and its friendly laid-back vibe. All power to the author, who writes well, and to the city, which has all those good things, but I'd rather tread softly around the peripheries than follow the path beaten by the NYT. That meant I was obliged to look for a different Yamaguchi city. Did I find it? Well, no and then yes.

My first day, a Sunday, was a washout. I took a long hot walk through the suburbs, which were attractive but low-key (except for some sports fields which I couldn't get into because they were part of a school, and a gymnasium which I was not allowed to enter because it was private and belonged to the police). Then I visited some museums seeking local inspiration: the folklore museum was interesting but very small; the prefectural museum was OK but mainly for kids; and the prefectural art museum was closed. Still searching for new angles, I shuffled down the long shopping arcade, where I drank a cream soda and was given a leaflet by a Buddhist proselytiser. As for photos: nada, zilch.

The second day was a bit more memorable. I went up into the hills and got spooked by the prospect of stepping on a mamushi (a Japanese viper). When I got back, I sunk into and emerged velvet-skinned from a long soak in an onsen. I visited a very bad art installation. And I ate an unforgivably awful meal at a non-Japanese restaurant, this being my own stupid fault. While there was nothing unusual about any of these activities — mamushis are endemic in Japan, Yamaguchi has nice hot-springs, and disappointment can be found everywhere — I at least experienced a few things that were not on a particular American newspaper's list of recommendations.

On the third day, I found what I was looking for.

she is very 'come hither' here.. ;D

luckily she matches my walls and pillows fabulously!!

originally I thought this cuckoo wasp to be Omalus (now: Pseudomalus) aeneus but then the punctation on mesoscutum did not fit but pointed to P. puncticollis. Now I went back to the original series of photos to see if I could get a glimpse of the 3rd metasomal tergum (the last visible one). This and the previous shot are not chosen for general quality but because they seem to show a semitranslucent margin (appearing brownish in the photos) and a tooth-like projection. ID confirmed by Alexander Berg. Thanks!

This is highly included (cloudy) aquamarine. It is perfect for a cabochon as it really has that ocean-ish, Pisces-ish quality. This material wouldn't look good faceted, like the highly clean, transparent gem we usually see.

At high latitudes every winter carbon dioxide condenses from Mars' atmosphere onto the surface forming a seasonal polar cap. In the spring, the Sun shines through this semitranslucent layer of dry ice and heats the ground below.

The ice sublimates (goes directly from ice to gas) on the underside of the seasonal ice layer and the gas is trapped. When the pressure is high enough the ice cracks and ruptures allowing the gas to escape. When the conditions are optimal this gas may condense locally near the source, forming a bright fan.

The dark fans are fine bits of surface material that get carried along by the escaping gas up to above the surface ice. Fine particles are also carried downwind and deposited in dark fans on top of the ice, where they may slowly sink into the ice. The rows of dark fans outline the original crack in the ice that allowed the gas to escape.

Story: Michael is a young boy with autism who I was asked to shoot for the cover of a book called The Gifts of Autism. I delivered a few different final images but I really felt like this one worked the best conceptually. Who knows what will be chosen but that's my opinion. The author and I went to Michaels house on a Sunday afternoon and I shot the whole thing pretty quickly. The whole shoot went very well and was a lot of fun. I chose red just because I thought it worked well with a title containing "colors" and because I thought it would look great on a book cover. You know, pop off the shelf kind of thing. Turned out it was his favorite color too so that was a nice bonus.

Lighting: This is a simple light setup I learned from www.fstopinertia.com then slightly adapted. She uses a bare head, I use a head in a medium softbox. All it is 1 dynalite 4040 head in a medium softbox about 3ft behind a large piece of semitranslucent white nylon. The nylon is strung between two lightstands and placed parrallel to the background and about 5 feet back. It takes a lot of power with all the diffusion so I have a 1000watt pack on full power and it's triggered with pocketwizards.

Wedgwood's swan vases were the most imposing products that the factory made in the last century.

The models in the Museum, made eight years apart, present a rather more unified and harmonious ensemble: in each instance an egg-shaped vase, rising from a clump of reeds and seemingly supported by three swans, is closed by a mound supporting a swan preening an outstretched wing.

Semitranslucent turquoise blue and yellow "majolica" glazes are used on the bases, handles, and covers. The Wedgwood archives do not record the designer, but the French sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse( 1824-1887) has been suggested.
