Sometimes telling someone to “just stay positive” doesn’t help, it actually hurts. When we minimize someone’s pain by saying “it could be worse” or “just think positive,” we risk dismissing their lived experience. Real healing doesn’t come from ignoring difficult emotions; it comes from acknowledging them. When people feel shamed for what they’re feeling, they learn to suppress rather than process. True emotional support means making space for honesty, not forcing positivity where understanding is needed.
