No American town planner would accommodate a rivulet of water in the main commercial district of a town. In the United States, such a waterway would be buried in a culvert below the street. In Freising, the townspeople took a different approach.

A narrow creek, or brook, or crook - whatever - runs down the middle of Obere Hauptstrasse. While some of it had to go through a culvert or two, the town daylighted it through much of the street's pedestrian zone, put a fence along one side and added seating areas on the other side as well as hanging flower beds along the fence. it's a creative way of integrating the waterway within the streetscape.

Where I live, there are two brooks that go under the main east-west avenue, and one of those brooks takes a ninety-degree turn to the west and goes under a main north-south avenue. The two brooks eventually join near a park. Thanks to the magic of culverts, though, few people are aware of any of this. They are out of sight, out of mind . . . proof that Americans are out of their minds.

The statue of Karl Obermayr, interestingly sits on one side of the rivulet but the plaque identifying him is on the opposite side.
