DL 3642 is the very last ALCO C636 around. It was ordered by PRR and delivered to Penn Central built 1968.
Delaware Lackawanna's PT98 assembles its train in Scranton, under the shadow of the large former Lackawanna RR station. Long devoid of passenger train traffic, the building survives today as a Radison hotel.

Dynamic Brake equipped GP9 at Scranton Pa. on 07-22-1973. Living on the east end of the EL in Bergen County NJ it was a rare occasion seeing any of these down our way. Built for the Erie in 06-1956, packing 1,750 horsepower, and looking sharp for a 17 year old loco. Howard Kent Jr.

Not much happening outside at the EL Scranton diesel shop on this day July 22th 1973. Only Alco C424 2407 sitting outside bay #4 and I never ventured inside. Howard Kent Jr.
I'm ending my short series of my D-L SC-7 adventure with this shot of them as they return for Scranton as seen from the overpass at Childs, PA looking toward Mayfield. What a sight this must have been 70 years earlier with the D&H and NYO&W taking up most of the Valley with tracks loaded with hopper cars of black diamonds.

This image was amazed me with its timing! I thought that I was late when I just arrived, but the clouds suddenly reflects the sunshine, which gives a little bit of the light that helps me to ended up with this wonderful shot! I hope you like it! It was taken at Scranton Lake , Pennsylvania USA.

Starting their climb out of Scranton and headed for Moscow, PA, CNJ ALCO RS3 #1554 and a "Lackawanna" F3 lead an eastbound Christmas train past the former Lackawanna station.

For today's Freight Car Friday here's an interesting junk yard find that I don't know much about. Located next to CJ's Garage near the corner of Luzerne St. and 24th Ave. this 50 ft double door former Erie-Lackawanna car isn't too far from its old home rails as the Reading and Northern's Scranton Branch, the former Lackawanna Keyser Valley Branch is only about 400 ft away to the east.
As for this car I'm not even sure of the number though it appears to be EL 16751x and if so was moat likely part of a batch of 550 cars built by Greenville Steel Car for the Erie in 1956. The original numbers on the Erie were in the 66xxx and 67xxx series but were appended with a preceding '1' at some point though may have been renumbered again back to five digits later. If there are any Erie-Lackawanna freight car experts here I'd love to learn more about this cars specific history and if it lasted into the Conrail era and when it was finally retired.
I do love finding little surprises like this in my travels that always lead me to learn more about obscure railroading subjects.

8/2021 - Scranton, PA
Radiator profile of a big ugly MLW/ALCO unit. Don't get me wrong, I love these units and am thankful I got to chase its sister units on the WNYP.
On September 18, 1992, I went on a Steam Train Excursion sponsored by the United Railroad Historical Society (aka: URHS) in Scranton Pennsylvania (aka: Steamtown"), and a Locomotive Photography Shoot from the Scranton Turntable. I also had time to do a walking tour of the Scranton Steamtown National Historic Site. Further information about Steamtown can be found at:

I took this Photograph after we were finished with Time Lapse Photography from the Turntable. For this Photograph, I had my tripod on the ground and there was sufficient Light supplied by some of the other Locomotives, such that I was able to get a very grainy photograph of the locomotives peeking out of the Roundhouse. It took about two hours of work with Photoshopâ„¢ for me to turn this into an acceptable Photograph.
There are three Steam Locomotives in this Photograph. I haven;t identified the Locomotive in Stall 18. The Locomotive in Stall 19, is Canadian Pacific Railway 4-6-2 Number 2317. The Locomotive in Stall 20, is Canadian National 2-8-2 Number 3254. I'm not sure, but that might be a Diesel Locomotive in Stall 17.
During the Nighttime Photo Shoot, the participants (myself included) were directed to set up their Tripod Mounted Cameras on the Turntable with their cameras set for bulb (to control the shutter) and with their lenses set for a specific f-Stop. For each Photo, the URHS Crew would move & Position a Locomotive within view of all of the participants cameras and, told us which f-stop to use. This type of Photography is often referred to as Time Lapse Photography ( aka: Open Lens Photography, aka: Bulb Photography )
They would then move around between the participants and the Locomotive firing Flash Bulbs at numerous spots on each locomotive, so as to completely light all parts of the locomotive (Serially, Not Simultaneously). They did this for each Locomotive chosen by the URHS and we were told when to open our Lenses, followed by their firing all of the Flash Bulbs & when to close our Lenses. Our Film was therefore incrementally exposed by each overlapping illuminated area on the locomotive to form a complete picture of the locomotive. This was done for each locomotive chosen by the URHS Crew. I don't remember how many locomotives we photographed that night, but it was somewhere around a dozen. It was limited by the cumulative time required to move a locomotive into position, the time required to flash each of the Flash Bulbs and replace one locomotive with another a dozen times. This amounted to several hours.
I took this photograph with my Minolta Maxxim 5000 SLR using Color Print Film, when I was just learning photograph; so they are very soft & grainy. I scanned the Negatives and used Photoshop Elements to correct the exposure and to generate these Digital Images.
Disclaimer: Since I took this photograph while I was still learning Photography, some of my original Photos are of poor quality in both Exposure and Sharpness, which I could only partially correct with Adobe Photoshop Elementsâ„¢.
