Winfield Scott (June 13, 1786 – May 29, 1866) was an American military commander and political candidate. He served as a general in the United States Army from 1814 to 1861, taking part in the War of 1812, the Mexican–American War, the early stages of the American Civil War and conflicts with Native Americans. Scott was the Whig Party's presidential nominee in the 1852 election, but was defeated by Democrat Franklin Pierce. He was known as Old Fuss and Feathers for his insistence on proper military etiquette, as well as the Grand Old Man of the Army for his many years of service.

Abbotsford is the house built and lived in by Sir Walter Scott, the 19th century novelist, and author of timeless classics such as Waverley, Rob Roy, Ivanhoe and The Lady of the Lake. In 1811 Sir Walter bought the property which was to become Abbotsford, set in the heart of the Scottish Borders, on the banks of the River Tweed. The building of Abbotsford took six years, and was completed in 1824. William Atkinson was the chosen architect, and George Bulloch gave his advice on the furnishings, while local craftsmen carried out the work. The house was opened to the public in 1833, five months after Sir Walter's death, and has been enjoyed by visitors ever since.

Alfred Angas Scott designed a tricycle in 1915, which was not yet in series production at the time. He started serial production in 1920, this ended in 1924 and in 1925 the company was dissolved. A total of around 200 vehicles were built.

Originally scheduled for conversion to condos, the 1902 historical building was demolished this week because of a risk of its collapse.

This picture of the building and its ghost sign was taken while it was on death row.

Taken in Joshua Tree National Park, California - March 2017.

I always see Scott's Orioles when I visit Joshua Tree National Park, but they tend to stick to the tops of Joshua Trees, making them somewhat difficult to get good photos of. I was thrilled when this bird came to some flowers in a lower part of a Joshua Tree, allowing for some photos closer to eye-level.
