Spoonbill - Platalea leucorodia

Spoonbills are tall white waterbirds with long spatulate black bills and long black legs. In flight they fly with necks and legs extended, in the water they feed with elegant sideward sweeps of their bill. In the breeding season adults show some yellow on their breast and bill tip. The species is of European conservation concern and a very rare breeding bird in the UK. They are listed are listed on Schedule 1 of The Wildlife and Countryside Act. Most birds migrate south in the winter, but numerous individuals remain and winter in Western Europe.

Although they bred in East Anglia during Medieval times, spoonbills had not bred in Britain for over 300 years until 2010, when a small colony was discovered on the north Norfolk coast.

Had a talk with my old man

Said, "Help me understand"

He said "Turn 68, oh, you'll re-negotiate"

"Don't stop this train"

Don't for a minute change the place you're in

And don't think I couldn't ever understand

I tried my hand

John, honestly we'll never stop this train"

Cause now I see, I'm never gonna stop this train

Never gonna stop this train.

.....

I have always lived in houses, which were very close to the sea and also very close there was a railway line. I have always liked to see a train pass or hear its sound. When I was little and left school, we would go to the railways, close to home, to throw stones at the freight wagons of the freight trains that came down and brought salt from the Súria and Cardona mines, to be loaded onto ships in the port of Barcelona. In addition to throwing stones at it, we counted the number of wagons the locomotive was carrying. Possibly, this train loaded with salt, its schedule was around 1 noon and not at 2:10, like the song written by Albertano and sung with that special voice by Taj Mahal, whom I consider the best bluesman, with permission from B.B. King.

We spend a part of our childhood on the railroad tracks, between abandoned wagons and freight trains. And the port and the sea in summer. Unforgettable days.

There was a day, when several locomotives united, transported many wagons. We count more than a hundred. They seem like a lot to me, but the mind of a child, when he is a child, is a little messy. They talk and think in such a way that it seems they are a little crazy. But they are not. I don't know if it was really more than a hundred wagons that we counted. Possibly we miscounted. But that day... that day was a truly unforgettable "orgy" of stone throwing.

On this railway line, some people died who did not hear the locomotive arrive. And even some person committed suicide, stretched out on the tracks while the railroad came at full speed, without the possibility of stopping. While i'm listening to "Mystery Train" by The Neville Brothers, with this lilting rhythm, imitating the sound of a railway, I remember the kind locomotive driver, who when he saw us, he would sound the train's horn, say hello to us and reduce the speed of the locomotive, so that we had more time to throw stones. We were not hooligans. We were just... children playing .

Never let a train get away from you. And much less, those trains that suddenly appear and cross our lives. Get on all the trains you find, even if they are mysterious... because life is a mystery train, you never know where it will take you.

.....

Cause now I see, I'm never gonna stop this train

Never gonna stop this train.

Well I woke up this morning and the sun refused to shine.

Til I hear the 2:10 train.

Hello my amazing Flickr friends !

Today we celebrate a green day at Color my World Daily. And in Montreal we have another cold winter day. Once again my schedule is completely hectic this week and my picture was inspired by this situation… Sometimes I just want to take everyone and everything important to me, put it in a space shuttle and go to another galaxy far far away for a family vacation (Cuba ??) ! Just like Madame Giraffe here : she is making sure that everything she needs is nicely packed before she goes on vacation…

But for now: I just need my coffee and I will be good.

See you later my friends !! I wish you an amazing day !!

Thank you so much for all your lovely comments / favs/ general support / happy thoughts!! Stay safe and well!! And see you soon on Flickr !!

Ospizio Bernina is a station on the Bernina Railway line between St. Moritz in Switzerland and Tirano in Italy. The station lies on the shores of Lago Bianco, near the Bernina Pass, between the Engadin and the valley of Poschiavo, in Graubünden

Lago Bianco (literally "White Lake") is a reservoir at the Bernina pass in the Grisons, Switzerland. Its elevation is 2,234 m (7,329 ft); its surface area is 1.50 km2 (0.58 sq mi). The current reservoir was formed by the two dams Scala and Arlas on the site of two natural lakes (Lago Bianco and Lago della Scala). Its narrow-gauge railroad is the sole rail link from the St. Moritz region to Italy, providing the highest regularly scheduled train service in Europe at this site. (Wikipedia)

The Austonian held the crown of tallest building in Austin for nine years until The Independent surpassed it by only seven feet in 2019. Located at 200 Congress Ave., the 683-foot tall, 56-story building is a modern architectural icon in this rapidly growing city.

This post modern skyscraper was designed by Ziegler Cooper Architects of Houston. At the time of its completion in 2010, the Austrian was both the tallest building in Austin, and the tallest residential skyscraper in the United States west of the Mississippi River. Both distinctions are now held by The Independent, although another downtown Austin tower, Sixth and Guadalupe and still under construction, has already topped out at its final height of 865-feet and is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2023.

Austin is the capital of the State of Texas, as well as the seat of Travis County. With a population of just under one million residents, Austin is the 11th largest city in the United States. The Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos Metropolitan Area, now with a population of 2.3M, is one of the fastest growing large metropolitan areas in the country having added more than 579,000 residents since 2010.

Led by a former Conrail SD40-2, M426 rounds the curve by the Readfield bog on their way east to Waterville. While the current schedule is about as good as it can be for an eastbound on District 1, the excessive brush growth in recent years makes it somewhat frustrating to find open spots, with this spot in Readfield being about the best available.

Completed in 1810 by John Rennie, the spectacular Dundas Aqueduct carries the Kennet & Avon Canal over the River Avon and is a Scheduled Monument. It was the first canal structure to be designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument in 1951.

Named after Charles Dundas, the first chairman of the Kennet and Avon Canal Company, the aqueduct forms the junction between the Kennet and Avon Canal and the largely derelict Somerset Coal Canal. The short stretch of the Somerset Coal Canal still in water forms Brassknocker Basin, used for boat moorings, cycle hire and a cafe. A short walk further there is the Dundas Wharf where the small tollhouse, warehouse and crane still stand.

With the context that this Empire Builder detoured from Seattle to Spokane via Portland, they're doing pretty solid schedule wise into Havre at only about 3 hours down. The Milk River wanders north of the tracks through Havre and this was fun spot to see it.

The express train R 768 ‘Berounka’ from Praha hl.n. to Železná Ruda-Alžbětín runs from Klatovy with a class 754 diesel locomotive. 754.058 in the so-called Najbrt design 1.1 was scheduled for this task on 27 October 2024. This colour scheme was used on the ČD between 2008 and 2011. Shortly after leaving Zelená Lhota station, I was able to take this train in front of colourful deciduous trees in the soft afternoon light.

Ruthven Barracks near Ruthven in Badenoch, Scotland, are the best preserved of the four barracks built in 1719 after the 1715 Jacobite rising. Set on an old castle mound, the complex comprises two large three-storey blocks occupying two sides of the enclosure, each with two rooms per floor. The barracks and enclosing walls were built with loopholes for musket firing, and bastion towers were built at opposite corners. Destroyed by Jacobites following their retreat after the Battle of Culloden in 1746, the Barracks ruins are maintained as a scheduled monument by Historic Environment Scotland. They are accessible at all times without entrance charge.

Two of the four chicks to come out of this box. All ringed, weighed and measured, admired and photographed. The chick on the right was the youngest and judging by its dark face a ruff is probably a female. All birds ringed under Schedule 1 Licence by qualified ringers and in a box which is part of the Falkirk Council Barn Owl Box Scheme. We’ve had a good season, with 36 chicks ringed, our second highest total

edna, I'm gonna need several Schedule E forms for this.

I thought you didn't pay taxes, stanley.

I don't, and this is how.

Four and a half years ago, I took a train to Nagasaki from Shimabara. The train passed a tiny seaside station which named Omisaki. It was amazing the hanging handkerchiefs on platform were written wishes by people in various of languages. Due to my tour schedule I had no time to get off to shoot, so I just catched the moment the door opening. Maybe the composition is not good in a rush, but I love this picture. Now I'm wondering so many years passed, have the wishes came true? I really hope so!

Here's to a good school year! I am crossing my fingers and hoping for the best for these kids. Our sky is still highly polluted from smoke, yesterday we had the worst air quality in the world again. The sunrise was red so I had to try to capture it quickly and then get the day going. New schedule, new school year, hold on tight.

Tōkyō Station (Japanese: 東京駅) is a major railway station in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan. The original station is located in Chiyoda's Marunouchi business district near the Imperial Palace grounds. The newer Eastern extension is not far from the Ginza commercial district. Due to the large area covered by the station, it is divided into the Marunouchi (west) and Yaesu (east) sides in its directional signage.

The station opened in 1914 as an integrated terminus for the present-day Tōkaidō Line, Tōhoku Line, and later the Chūō Line, which previously had separate termini in Tokyo. Since then, it has served as the main terminus for inter-city trains departing Tokyo westwards. The station was badly damaged during the Bombing of Tokyo on 25 May 1945 but soon resumed service. The Tōkaidō Shinkansen, the world’s first dedicated high-speed rail system, opened between the station and Osaka in 1964. With the extension of northbound Shinkansen lines from Ueno in 1991, the station also became a gateway to northeast Japan.

Served by the high-speed rail lines of the Shinkansen network, Tōkyō Station is the main inter-city rail terminal in Tokyo. It is the busiest station in Japan in terms of scheduled trains, with more than 4,000 trains arriving and departing daily, and the fifth-busiest in eastern Japan in terms of passenger throughput; on average, more than 500,000 people use Tōkyō Station every day. The station is also served by many regional commuter lines of Japan Railways, as well as the Tokyo Metro network.

The L519 Edson Sub local heads across the causeway at Wabamun Lake with a short train. With the Sundance Power Plant pretty much converted to natural gas fuel, a good chunk of traffic handled by the L519 (flyash from burning coal) has been dramatically reduced. With the lack of flyash traffic, the local only runs this far once a week, down from the 3 day a week service schedule of the past.

Car tail lights trails on a dirt road through the Alabama Hill, under a starry night sky.

Miles Morgan does it better: Both Miles and I photographed this dirt road, exposing the streaking tail lights of our cars. Miles took a narrower view from the hill to the right, just above the road —allowing him to shoot from a higher position and capture more of an "S" curve composition to the road. Instead of shooting in the middle of the night like I did, he shot in the pre-dawn hour and used the setting moon in the sky rather than stars. I think you'll agree that his "blue hour" shot tops my starry night view! After admiring his great photograph, be sure to scroll down and read the story behind the image. It's worth the time. Miles is just as good with a pen as he is with a camera.

Exploring the Alabama Hills: I just returned from a week-long scouting trip in the Alabama Hills of Eastern California, where I will be conducting a starry "NightScape" workshop in April 2014 (we will also be doing a lot of daytime photography).

My new ebook, Milky Way NightScapes, gives extensive details on my style of starry night landscape photography. Four chapters cover planning, scouting, forecasting star/landscape alignment, light painting, shooting techniques and post processing.

Both sandhill crane eggs hatched and out popped two precocious, healthy orangey-gold chicks, endearingly known as "colts" almost immediately ready to follow their parents out of the nest on their diligent foraging for worms and insects to feed the colts.

Interesting to note that these photos were taken exactly one year to the day from my images of the 2019 hatchlings. These guys really keep to a tight schedule!

VRE 305 heads south toward Fredericksburg, dodging some intermittent clouds as they slow for their stop in Crystal City. With the roads still rough and the federal government offices closed, VRE operated their snow schedule at about 50% the normal service today. I'm guessing most trains were still empty.

I think this is stunning architecture! The station was designed by the architect John McAslan + Partners, and the renovation of the station, which to their credit, was completed in 2005, was done on schedule.

To read more about the remarkable redesign of the station, see the Arch Daily article posted online at www.archdaily.com/219082/kings-cross-station-john-mcaslan....

The Advanced Passenger Train programme was all about creating a world beating tilting train for the future, without having to spend billions on new dedicated track for high speed running. It should have followed in the steps of the HST, and put the UK in the forefront of railway innovation. It was scrapped, and the technology sold to the Italians who produced, the Pendolino! Scrapped by a government who lacked backbone and vision, and a hostile press who excelled in the maxim of not letting un truths get in the way of a good story. Nothing new there then, you may say? This variety of Cicada (Magicicada) has a 17-year life cycle and is part of brood IV, or the Kansan Brood. The last time they emerged in Nebraska was 1998. They started to emerge from the ground about a week ago as they were delayed by the rainy weather. So happy that we were able to find them in Weeping Water, Nebraska yesterday afternoon.

People call these cicadas “locusts” but they are not true locusts — real locusts look like grasshoppers. The phrase “17 year cicada” indicates that they arrive every 17 years. The name “periodical cicadas” indicates that they arrive periodically and not each and every year. The scientific name for the Genus of these cicadas is Magicicada, and there are 3 types of 17 year Magicicadas: Magicicada septendecim, Magicicada cassini and Magicicada septendecula. This is a true locust:

There are literally billions of 17- year cicadas. Why? One theory suggests that the large number of cicadas overwhelms predators, so predators are never able to eat them all and many always survive to mate. This is a survival strategy called “predator satiation”.

Female Blinded Sphinx (Paonias excaecata; Hodges 7824) - Suburban New Jersey, 25 miles west of "The City" (NYC)

Earlier today Dah Wife came running into the house shouting, "Giant moth, giant moth!" She wasn't as excited as the time she spotted a Polyphemus Moth in Florida, so I was reasonably sure that it wasn't Mothra, so instead of hiding in the basement I ran to get my camera and take some pics.

When I found the moth I immediately recognized it as a Blind Sphinx, and then gave her a little poke to see if she would be so kind as to show me her blind eyes, and was pleasantly surprised at how she accommodated me!

And then when I looked up her last visit on Flickr ( to find her scientific name), I found she was right on schedule ± a day or two. Pretty amazing how you don't really need a calendar if you know your buggers.

Late afternoon sunlight breaks through overcast to illuminate eastern Sierra aspen groves.

On my early October visit to the Eastern Sierra I was surprised to find quite a lot of color here and in many other places with which I’m familiar. By the date on which I arrived, the high elevation color is usually past its peak, the mid-elevation color is getting good, and the lower trees are largely still green. But this year felt different — it seemed like the higher trees changed later while the lower trees were ahead of schedule, with the result being that the color spanned a wide range of elevations.

On down the East Side, heading from my crossing at Monitor Pass toward my goal further south I passed by this familiar vista. I was surprised by the amount of color and the good condition of the trees, so I made a point of scheduling a return visit in the evening when the trees are usually backlit by the sun just before it drops behind the crest. However, clouds had entered the picture and the light was dull… until a few beams of light broke through the overcast shortly before sunset.

SOO 909 didn't often rate a pair of GP9's by late 1983 when I took this shot. 2408 and 404 are on the hill leaving Trout Lake with 4000 tons on October 18, 1983. With another 36 loads scheduled to be picked up between here and Gladstone the old geeps will be getting a workout before this day is over.

Intentions were to spend two nights in Badlands NP in South

Dakota photographing the Perseid meteor shower, then process those images and post to Flickr shortly afterward. However, my old laptop and a change in the weather forecast had other plans for this schedule.

This shot was taken from the Door Trail off of the Northeast Entrance Road, and in the past, I would not use frames when cars were driving in at night, but the lighting added some dimension to the shot, and I decided to include it this time.

Even though things didn't go as planned it was an excellent road trip overall and I was able to meet up with a Flickr friend that lives nearby. Everything Works Out In The End!

Morondava (from Malagasy: morona lava "long coast") is a city located in Menabe Region, of which it is the capital, in Madagascar. It is located in the delta of the Morondava Rive. Its population as of the 2018 census, was 53,510.

The predominant tribe is the Sakalava. But there are also a few Betsileo, Tsimihety, Merina, Makoa and Europeans.

Air Madagascar has regular scheduled flights to Morondava Airport. The main road to town has been renovated recently. With the new road established, a trip from Antananarivo to Morondava by taxi-brousse takes approximately 12 hours. Pirogues are consequently a popular mode of transport used to ferry people and goods along the coast, especially to Morombe.

The city is famous amongst other things for the spectacular Avenue of Baobabs nearby. These giant baobab trees are an 800-year-old legacy of the dense tropical forests that once throve here. Over the years, as the country's population grew, the forests were steadily cut down, leaving only the baobab trees, which the locals preserved for religious reasons. Today, deforestation still continues as large areas of this region, including some of few remaining baobabs, are cleared to make way for sugar cane plantations.
