Lone scarlet quartet,

Glows in my mind’s eye.

Long-distance migrant. Twice a year, Scarlet Tanagers fly across the Gulf of Mexico between their breeding grounds in eastern North America and their wintering grounds in South America. They usually migrate at night. Individuals that spend the winter farther south migrate to breeding grounds later, and in more synchronized bursts, than individuals wintering further north. Taken during Spring migration in April last year at Fort DeSoto in St Petersburg Florida.

TheThe scarlet Ibis has a curved, slender bill that they use to probe into shallow water, mud or grass when foraging.

As with flamingos, the brilliant red color of the scarlet ibis comes from carotene found in the crustaceans on which it feeds.

The scarlet ibis is a gregarious bird, living, traveling, and breeding in flocks. In flight, ibises form diagonal lines or V-formations. This formation decreases wind resistance for trailing birds. When the leader of the pack tires, it falls to the back of the formation and another ibis takes its place at the front.

These birds are rather quiet, only grunting or croaking on breeding grounds.

Both the male and female take turns in guarding the nest site until the chicks are large enough to defend themselves. In addition, both parents help feed the chicks.

Ibises are an ancient lineage with fossil records going back 60 million years.

A new find from Eastern Manitoba.

This image was taken last Saturday morning April 20 after a huge storm came through on the Friday evening. I went to Fort De Soto Park in St Petersburg hoping for migrants, I was not disappointed, birds were everywhere in the sea grape trees feeding on the insects that were there. This will be the last image I post for awhile as we are traveling back home this week-end.

The Scarlet-bellied Mountain Tanager is another of the 120 Tanagers found in Colombia. As the name implies, they are found in the Andes at mid to higher altitudes. Like most Tanagers, they love ripe fruit.

Male Scarlet Tanagers are among the most blindingly gorgeous birds in a forest in summer, with blood-red bodies set off by jet-black wings and tail. They’re also one of the most frustratingly hard to find as they stay high in the forest canopy singing rich, burry songs.

Summertime, Summertime!! Well, not quite, but it kind of feels like it.

I got out of bed this morning, opened the bedroom window blinds and immediately spotted this gentleman, a first for our property.

A 2.5 hour trip to Canberra to get photos of Robins and was rewarded with a sighting of a few Scarlet Robins like this little guy.

Thank you for visiting. I appreciate the faves and kind comments very much.

I photographed this scarlet tanager in the morning hours as the sun was hitting the outer edge of an embankment but was not shining through all the snags and brush, which is how the bird caught this wonderful light while the background remained dark.

Thank you for viewing, commenting on and faving my photo!
