Scalp (2021) is a series of silicone and synthetic hair sculptures by Dutch contemporary artist Marlie Mul, originally debuted in her solo exhibition Sperms Going to a Fashion Show at the Croy Nielsen gallery in Vienna. The sculptures present human heads viewed unnaturally from above, topped with tufts of hair reminiscent of men’s haircuts. Elongated appendages combine the visual markers of sperms, human noses, and flaccid phalluses to expose an anonymous, collective toxic masculinity as insipid and impotent. Cast in soft, pearly white silicone with meticulously transplanted hair, the material evokes medical associations with hair transplants and cosmetic surgical implants.
The exhibition Beyond the Manosphere — Masculinities Today at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (April 17 to August 2, 2026) explores what it means to be a man today. The exhibition responds to the rise of the 'manosphere'; an online network in which a rigid, often misogynistic form of masculinity is propagated.
The exhibition, curated by Melanie Bühler, uses the 'manosphere' not so much to literally display online culture (such as Andrew Tate or Trumpism), but to dissect masculinity as a 'sphere' (a ball or vessel full of contradictions). The artworks on display break with dominant clichés. They show that while masculinity is indeed an expression of power, it can just as easily be everyday, shaky, vulnerable, and tender.
A unique and special product. It consists of a beard with a modifiable facial texture and a separate scalp. Owners of the full pack can also change the scalp texture to personalize the product with tattoos or different shapes to suit their taste.
