“My night off, with The Old Ceremony”
Walking into the club in fashion, about twenty-five minutes after the show starts, I see this gorgeous set up with tube lighting surrounding microphone stands and a stage crowded with artists exploding. Classy dressing and hometown humble voices spoke through the system of what was about to be played. I had done the unthinkable that any self-respecting photojournalist would not; I went to a show without my camera. The point being… day in and day out I see some of the most talented and mind blowing shows but I don’t get to truly enjoy them because I’m worried about atmospheric lighting, and blurry headshots, how to see the stage unlike others do. It is all about angles and trying to catch some form of music between my shots, this night I just wanted to be one with the music and the scene. Don’t get me wrong I’m not complaining at all it’s what I live for. Seeing some familiar faces and being persuaded to get my camera, another thirty minutes back to retrieve my camera and thirty rushed minutes back to shoot my heart out.. later. I came up with a few trinkets on film and still had the chance to enjoy the show.
On stage were The Old Ceremony, they have a sort of character that takes you back to the 50s and 60s, with a rhythmic jazzy swing feel to the chords, story placing lyrics, and sinful engages with the soul. Their evocative sound puts you in to a Halloween-ish mode regardless that it was a blazing August day when they came to our doorstep with the tunes. The groups as a whole are a bunch of clever musicians from all walks of time and life coming together to make something strangely familiar though you will not find this anywhere else. It is not everyday you see an upright bass, double keyboard, vibraphone and lights wired around a microphone with vocals so crisp and orgasmic that you just want to take yourself in the crowd. Wishing for that one note to send you over the edge to have you reaching for bed sheets and walls that are not there.
Lead singer Django Haskins, of International Orange (with Robert Sledge and Snuzz) and Django & the Regulars, is a seasoned stage crooner-songwriter who brings an element of stardom to The Old Ceremony. He knows how to work a crowd, invoke pack-wide smiles, and who will not fall for a crafty sing-a-long? Portions of the songs propel you so far out into oblivion it’s hard to bring you in again; there is something to be said for real talent these days and formal song writing, clean time changes, duality in beautiful songs with somber lyrics, and pieces that leaves a lasting impression enough you want to sit down at this electronic contraption and grab at words to share it with everyone. Sure it’s my job, just like taking photos on nights when my camera was to rest, sometimes things seize you and keep your attention, and you dont' mind a bit.
The collaboration of so many distinctive friends and oh so many styles makes for an interesting set played. They are a pulse finding non-eulogized part of the North Carolina underground just waiting to be explored and embraced.
The Old Ceremony can be seen next @ West End Wine Bar in Chapel Hill, NC on September 15th, 2005.

Full set Stryper @ Neighborhood Theatre two weeks ago. It was a sensational show and even though I was only allowed to use flash the first three songs... great thing the band liked me enough after talking with them they allowed me to stay in the photographers pit and take shots the entire show! Thanks to Debbi Jet Jennings for liking me enough to get me the media passes. :)

Clifton are hard school rockers. With an ambient lightness to the somewhat harder rock side, it is like Beach boys on Metal. Does this make sense? From the set up of the six-piece band the most distinguishing is the percussionist vox player Sean Nowak who continues to elude my lens to an extent of course... The fun loving music can be seen on the faces of the band and fans alike. Continual going back and fourth between them and when Burke "Hot fingers" Long (Guitar and Background Vocals) goes on a solo, the room listens to the guitar cry a song that can send you back to childhood or any memory that clings to your heartstrings. Raunchy pig skin beating by the master of cigarettes Thomas Stanfel (Drums and Background Vocals) leads the crowd to believe he's going to drum right through to the barrel. He's an animal, it's no wonder a stufed animal of the muppet Animal sits right in front of his kit. Infective rhythm and almost impossible timings, he sure doesn't miss a beat, or a time to interact with the crowd. Two members you will hear but a mutter from are Glenn Gibson (Bass) and Charlie Gaddy (Keyboards) sometimes I can't pick up if its them struggling with issues of being horribly shy or just so lost in the music they hear and see nothing else until the concert is over. The later is more like it as their performance reflects only the utmost concentration and love for the sounds they produce for our willing ears. Lastly the man himself Lead Vocalist and Guitar player of Clifton, Clifton Castelloe, the six foot (ten? ;0) 4' tall lean machine of steel and lyrical magic is a strong lead man. Distinguishing, timeless, and inviting vocal styles and charisma, crowd interaction and cute jokes, I think the extra round on the house made my heart jump a beat. Any way you slice it these guys rock, and with the electrifying energy they exude I'm wondering how they have the strength to even walk off stage. The few extra encores of AC/DC cover and was that a little Freebird?=Sensational. My second show of theirs and it will not be the last.
All together these guys make for the powerhouse classic band that is Clifton, a band to listen to, enjoy, and spread the word on.
They are now listed to be voted for on www.zippohottour.com and are the band located in Charlotte, NC give them a listen at Clifton Fans and if you think they should get a vote, vote for them!
If they are in your town, worth a listen and I know the boys will treat you right, they are good people and outstanding rock men!
ps. Next show I cover of theirs I am A )getting a ride home so I can get completely wasted and ask stupid questions and B) I'm getting a shot of the set list again. I wish I could have went into more detail of what was performed and not. That and maybe next time some of their extra giddy and well liquored up fans that kept trying to get me to find the band and introduce them might get a chance to meet them. That was fun.

as pretty as it looks, i may have to say goodbye to this car very soon. at 112k miles, it still drives wonderfully (220 horse powers and stick-shift are fun!), but it failed NOx in emission test. i'll try to replace the EGR valve and get a new air filter. if that doesn't fix it, i'm not going to get a new intake manifold or catalytic converter.
two years ago, the NOx reading was 0 (how could it be zero?). this year it's 1221. the standard is 937. so i'm missing by just a hair.
anyone interested in a fun sports car for cheap, email me. :-)

So yesterday was my last day with this beautiful little girl. Her mom found a new day home for her. I guess this is what happens when you move away. Oh Gillian, you will always have a special place in my heart.

Chills up and down my spine with the show. Fun, vibrant, funky, haunting:
Stephanie's Id are a strong, avant-guarde band straight out of the musical underground of NC. Please for the love of anything holy let this be the way the music industry is going to go, it will be nothing but angels and clouds if so! This band is the atmospheric perspective that makes every great work of art worth looking at. Anyone with half an art class knows that atmospheric perspective is what floats in the background a little faded out but it is the first thing that draws your eyes on a piece. Then your eyes look everywhere else around the work and go right back to the beginning. Them. Same can be said here, no matter what band you are going to see at the end of the night when you sit back down in your moving contraption to get back to that other sleeping contraption, gossip gossip gossip and boy that Stephanie's Id really took the spotlight didn't they? From the very moment you saw them setting up that great energy was in the air, everyone knows what I'm talking about. You can feel a wonderful show brewing: ambiance, energy, spunk, laughing, splendor, and completeness. Think their mannequin legs put a twist on things and added a touch of their personality right in your face.
Lyrically possessed, intelligently written words, I've not heard a way of wording things like this that have melted so well over chunky chords, crazed beats and sensual strums
Stephanie Morgan has an inviting angelic voice, raspy touch, a band can be wonderful but if the front man is all-wrong, nothing will work. They are set apart from the rest, one of their songs really said it all about Stephanie "She's something to see". From the moment I met her and got a little hug, being picked out of a crowd is wonderful as well. First impression to me was, what a bubbly beautiful woman. She's striking and on stage it is amplified to a dangerous level. To better put it though, THEY are something to see.
The stage blossomed upon the decent of this band. Glow to them screamed there is no stopping them. Opening with a few songs I was not familiar with, but the greatness that is their music it did not matter I did not know the words. I stood there soaking it all in. An impressive part of this showcase was most of the band members were rotating around the stage picking up different instruments and switching off for some other songs. It gave me just a hint of the collaborative talent level of these artists. The eclectic nature of the set could pack just about any type of musical fan into the house. Funky songs like "Quiet Jimmy" To the covertly emotional buildup that is "This One" at first you are drawn thinking it is Stephanie crooning to the crowd to listen to her song, as the song progresses you see it not just a crooning but a longing for deeper connection to people that seem to be lost in electrical lines and pulses over vinyl. This Heart in throat rawness is hard for many artists to achieve. You saw the pain, the serene, and the struggle, the overcoming. I was touched. Another song similar to this emotion was "Sing, Father". Then the song that really caught me, as "avant-guarde" was Anna! How do I even talk about it? I think the rhythm to it, and the deep talk/rapping form someone just belting out the likes of Sarah McLaughlin-esque was a wonderful surprise. Band was in perpetual motion into the beat, the grove, and the energy.
Band themselves should get at least a paragraph on them shouldn't they? After what I saw I do agree. Think that Chuck Lichtenberger's off beat "Your Mama" jokes set the stage for some free flowing feeling. Any giggle is worth a shot; he was surely putting out all the stinkers and just kept going. Next time I see them if I can get a hold of any type of shirt I want to get him one that says "Your mom". I kept losing who was who of Cameron Juroff (Vibraphone, Drums, Percussion) and Matthew Richmond (Drums, Vibraphone, Percussion) they were floating across stage so much, both uniformly talented. Eyes closed, and that look of ecstasy. Sex on stage.
The Stephanie's Id CD has been in my player since the night she handed it to me as I was walking out of those relentlessly tiny doors. You immerge from them feeling victorious and completely exhausted, falling to knees to try to catch up with what just happened to all your senses. Only one conclusion can be made, you have been rocked from tip to toe. Only the best do this to me, "They are something to see".
Eternally asked to compare a band to anyone someone else has heard of in the popular mainstream to emphasize and impact on the audience that are reading. There are so many to put here that could be a tiny influence, but they are strictly them. Sarah McLaughlin, bjork, radiohead, on some super psychedelic drug. There really is no comparison it is bluesy and it is soul and it is creation and it is a masterpiece up in your face. A powerful vocalist presence, stage aura, interaction with the crowd was outstanding as well, and single bad jokes that made you roll. No words in this world could convey what this show and band is like. Please at all costs search them out, on myspace, their website, at a show, for a CD, a hi, a wonderful hug, anything!
I'll be seeing them again very soon and I hope I get a chance to collapse into my moving contraption and then happen upon my sleeping contraption with "Popsicle" dreams and a love of new, magical, and of all things outstanding music.
How are they not packing arenas already?

Burke Long on the guitar for Clifton. This show at the Evening Muse as always was a pleasure. During the song "Spaceman" I became a riverfall and as I gathered myself to look at the band, Clifton singing his heart into the air his eye were closed. Thom and Sean with the rhythm eyes closed, bass player eyes closed and then Mr. Burke Long seen here, eyes closed.
They strip completely down to just emotion, absolute fantastic sounds, and heart on the stage. It was a magical moment for me and I looked to the crowd some people who had never seen them and you could see it, the place just pumped with that feeling you are looking for in a show.
Clifton are passion and love of music. I hope everyone can experience that song live with the guys.

What an experience. Myself I've not seen many folk rock bands in the flesh. The display of raw talent was crystal clear as was the sound. They had fun on the stage laughing and bantering, it was not all gimmicks and image. It was the very heart of the music that drew you into the show, and their beautiful harmonies. This group was meant to sing together, rock together, and rise together.

This picture kinda just happened. I realized that things take me twice the time they used to (much to my mother's despair), since I now take pictures of every action I make. Including dressing rooms. Maybe I'll put some more up later. I took some other good ones.

"Give me a reason and I won't break down. I've got more in store"
What a strikingly witty man! Not only was he really electrifying on stage but he was a crack up. Singing, enjoying his music, behind guitar then piano and round again. Eric Hutchinson put on a sweet set of his tunes and from what I gathered some covers? He struck me as a genre header and has a similar vibe to the acclaimed artist Ben Kweller, Both of which now I've had the honor of meeting. Like Kweller Hutchinson's infectious groovy feeling puts you in a "shiny happy people mind-set" leaving you wanting to hug the crowd and buy a t-shirt... just because it is so darn awesome. Bluesy, soul searching, over a harmonizing mystical tone, there is something familiar to his voice that sends you to a time everything was still all right. His lyrics are well thought out and fundamentally sound in nature, you'll not soon forget them and on the way to school or work, you'll catch yourself humming to yourself and saying, what a great time. His CD is one for the up days to your lifem or you want to just strum your guitar (or like some of us air guitar,) and sing right along.
An Impressions to last, first I shot the shown then I flashed him randomly around with some fans and after all this, though I blinded him with my death ray, I mean flash, he still had the manors enough to walk up to me and shake my hand. He formally introduced himself. A showman who knows how to market himself, work a room professionally and still really sounds good on stage? What could be better, oh yeah. Another Eric Hutchinson show in Charlotte, and soon!

In-V are a Charlotte Based band that are right now up for votes on the Zippo Hot Tour. Had the opportunity to interview them before their show and catch their intense energy filled live performance. Not only are these magical creatures a riot off stage, they transform from young guys into a freaking bolt of non-stop electric waves once they hit the stage. There is not a stage I think that could contain this trio, if you get a chance check them out at their website, myspace, and if you like what you hear vote for them on the Zippo Hot Tour. I want to see these guys out of NC and spreading the IN-V love in your town sometime soon!
