The Murle social and cultural life is centred round their cattle. They breed them, marry with them, eat their meat, drink their blood and milk, and sleep on their hides. The Murle compose songs full of references to the herds captured in battle or raids from their neighbours. Raiding and stealing of cattle is a question of honour and valour. Every important social event is celebrated by the sacrifice of a bull in order to ensure the participation of the ancestral spirits as well as to provide food for the assembled guests and relatives. Kinship obligations are expressed in terms of cattle.

Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh refer to the Rohingya refugees from Myanmar living in Bangladesh. On 22 Oct 2017, the UN reported that an estimated 603,000 refugees from Rakhine, Myanmar had crossed the border into Bangladesh since August 25, 2017. There are about 1 million Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.

Rohingyas are a Muslim minority in Myanmar regarded by many Myanmar Buddhists as illegal migrants from Bangladesh. The Rohingyas have lived in Myanmar for generations and the Bangladesh government has called for Myanmar to take back the refugees. They are denied citizenship in Myanmar and have been described as the world’s most persecuted minority. Rohingyas are persecuted in Myanmar by security forces and Buddhist extremists. Myanmar has denied persecuting the Rohingyas.

Since the 1970s Rohingya refugees have been coming to Bangladesh from Myanmar. In the 1990s, more than 250,000 resided in refugees camps in Bangladesh. In the early 2000s, all but 20,000 of them were repatriated to Myanmar, some against their will. This respite ended in 2015 and by 2017, an estimated 300,000 to 500,000 Rohinya refugees were in Bangladesh. Most of the refugees are located along the Teknaf-Cox's Bazar highway that is parallel to the Naf River, which is the border between Bangladesh and Myanmar. Most of the refugees are located in or near Cox's Bazar, a coastal area dependent upon tourism.

An irrigation project in Mozambique, run by Save the Children with UKaid support from the British government, has enabled women like Falesse to grow onions and tomatoes, which they can now sell in large quantities at the market. The income helps them to provide for their children and improve their living conditions.

In the Zambezi valley of Mozambique, climate change has affected hundreds of thousands people, who largely depend on rain-fed subsistence agriculture to make a living. With funding from UKaid from the Department for International Development, Save the Children works with farming communities affected by recurring floods and drought to enhance their resilience to the impact of climate change.

I'm re-uploading this image in order to auction a print to help the people of Japan following the recent earthquake and tsunami.

The auction is being run in association with "CPA - CHARITY PRINT AUCTIONS - JAPAN": www.flickr.com/groups/charityprintauctions/

A little bit about the image: Something a bit different. No Photoshop here...just cardboard.

I was aware of things like the splitzers you can buy/make for Lomography cameras so I thought I'd try something similar with my Hasselblad. I put together a makeshift splitzer by cutting some black cardboard to fit in a Cokin holder. Composing through a 45° finder while your camera is upside down is challenging to say the least...

Hasselblad 500c/m, Planar 80mm, Tri-x 400, Cokin P holder and cardboard filter :)

Please leave a comment with your offer. I will also be opening up the bidding to my contacts outside Flickr so will bid by proxy on their behalf where appropriate.

The image is printed at 6"x6" on 8"x10" paper

This is a silver gelatin print and was split grade printed by me (last night), in my darkroom (well...my bathroom) on Kentmere VC Select fine lustre paper. The image above is a scan of the actual print.

I would like to start the bidding at £30 ($50)

The bidding will end on Sunday 27th March at 1900 GMT. At this time, the person who has bid the highest, will donate the winning amount to a legitimate charity involved in the effort for aid for the people of Japan (links to a number of charities below). On proof of donation (please take a screen grab of your donation confirmation page), I will arrange for the print to be made and shipped to you (I'm prepared to ship this worldwide).

I will pay the printing and shipping costs, so all of your donation goes straight to the cause.

Over the last year Save the Children has trained 392 health workers in the Lindi region of Tanzania, and provided them with the skills they need to stop preventable deaths associated to child birth and newborn babies. .

.

Lindi region is one of the Tanzania's poorest areas - where children and mothers die in higher numbers than anywhere else in the country. Under-five mortality rate in Lindi is as high as 117 per 1,000 live births. Children's in this region is influenced by complex issues including remoteness, poor infrastructure such as roads and electricity, lack of education, inadequate planning and budgeting for health, lack of equipment and staff training as well as socio-cultural and religious beliefs..

.

Maternal, new born and child health indicators are still relatively poor in Tanzania, with the Maternal Mortality Ration as high as 454 deaths per 100,000 births, neonatal death of 26 per 1,000, Infant Mortality Rate of 51 per 1,000 and under five Mortality Rate of 81 per 1,000 live births. .

The Bolivian department of Beni was most affected by the 2008 floods in South America. Part of the support provided by the European Commission, via Oxfam and Save the Children, was a school bus system for children sheltered in displacement camps to transport them to their schools. Despite the destruction caused by the floods, children were able to conclude the school year thanks to these EU-funded buses.

In January 2013, an International Rescue Committee survey revealed that Syrian refugees cited rape as a primary reason their families fled the conflict. “I chose to leave Syria because I heard that they’d attack and rape the girls, so I got worried about my daughters.” Mervat says. Haneen, Mervat’s eldest daughter says “We can’t go back to Syria until the war is over”.

truly the fulfillment of prayers amongst parents...depends on their love for their children...and for all the children of Humanity...

Nada is a pharmacist at an Ebola health facility in Madima, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Her job is managing stocks of medications and medical equipment used in treating Ebola. With EU support, Save the Children supported health facilities by providing training and supplying them with essential medicines and material, such as handwashing stations, soap, gloves and rubber boots.

The know-how that staff like Nada has will survive Ebola and will stay in the community. It is a long-term investment in its health.

In the rain we could see their tears

In our hearts we felt their hope.

Girl playing on a street in Maputo, Mozambique. Simple toy but life is sweet.

This young woman, girl actually -- since she is no more than 15 or 16 years old, lives at the bus-stop near my local post -office. I took this picture last summer, when she was pregnant with her second child who she had about a month ago. Most women who live on the streets are vulnerable to rape, and often turn to prostitution to make some money.I periodically supply her with some food or clothes, but I realized that these women resisted the idea of undergoing sterilization even if you offer to pay for it. I later realized why. Another woman, who lives nearby, and has 8 children ranging from 3 months to 12 years, leases out her little girls to the men who solicit sex from her. The children become a form of income -- not just through this but also begging. The second family earns more and eats better. They manage fish everyday and her children are healthier looking. There arn't enough women's shelters in India but even if there were one of the biggest problems would be that after generations of living on the streets many of these women would be extremely resistant to any form of institutionalized living -- with rules and regulations. This is a big challenge for India, right now crowing about its economic "success." 80% of Indian women fall under the poverty line and 9 out of 10 suffers from poor nutrition and anaemia!!

Despite the hardships of life in the Dadaab camps, children who are well enough still love to play and climb trees. But the drought situation in Dadaab and across the Horn of Africa region is becoming increasingly desperate for millions of people.

The UK today announced a new package of support for over a million of the people most severely affected by the drought in the region.

This UK aid package will provide assistance to:

- 500,000 people in Somalia, including treatment for nearly 70,000 acutely malnourished children

- Over 130,000 people in Dadaab refugee camps in Kenya, including access to clean drinking water and health care for one third of refugees

- Over 100,000 people in Dolo Ado refugee camps in Ethiopia including access to shelter, clean drinking water and treatment for starving children

- 300,000 Kenyans, including special rations to prevent malnutrition in children under the age of five and breastfeeding mothers

Once they've made it to Dolo Ado, and have been registered, people are able to get access to an allocation of 8-10 litres of water per person per day. This has to meet all of their needs, for drinking, cooking and washing. The average person in the UK uses 150 litres per day.
