Atyrgul receives hygiene kits for her two grandchildren distributed by Save the Children in Osh, Kyrgyzstan. Southern Kyrgyzstan has experienced escalating violence between ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbek populations since the government in Bishkek was overthrown on 7 April and an interim government took power. The Government of Uzbekistan has reported that more than 75,000 refugees have fled into Uzbekistan from Kyrgyzstan in the last week..

.

A Save the Children team is on the ground in Kyrgyzstan, assessing the needs of families affected in and around the city of Osh. We've distributed vital aid such as hygiene kits to children and families affected by the violence and we will work to provide health services, run activities to keep children safe.

Save the Children knows that having the right tools—from simple things like soap and water to critical resources like dedicated team members—can make all the difference.

Ethnic Uzbek refugees who fled the violence in Kyrgyzstan wait for their turn to cross the border into Uzbekistan near the village of Jalal-Kuduk June 14, 2010. In Uzbekistan, a tent camp has been erected while refugees are occupying schools and other public buildings. Many more citizens have been made homeless or displaced by the fighting and thousands are reportedly stuck at the border.

Following the establishment of the Emergency Open Air Nurseries Committee in 1933, the Save the Children Fund (SCF) became a prominent innovator in nursery provision and by 1939 they were running 11 nurseries in the UK, supported by the Board of Education. During the Second World War, the Fund expanded this work and established residential nurseries for evacuated children, and day centres for children of working mothers.

Much of SCF’s later work in the UK derived from the success of these early nurseries, including the creation of hospital playgroups, which were a direct expansion of their pioneering playgroup programme, the establishment of family centres, and the creation of the Building Blocks Programme, later the Equality Learning Centre, which provided support and guidance for the holistic education of under-fives.

A key aspect of Save the Children Fund’s work has been their fundraising and promotional activities which has underpinned their ability to finance and deliver their various programmes across the world. Since its foundation the charity has faced the challenge of how to raise funds often in the face of adversity, criticism and scepticism.

To meet this challenge the Fund has created, from its very inception, innovative fundraising and publicity campaigns. The organisation has often been at the forefront of using new media, including film, television and audio, alongside the more traditional format of print. These various methods have enabled the organisation to bring the many real issues that children face across the world into the minds of the British public and encourage them to support the charity. Not only have these methods been used to raise funds but also to promote, educate, and advocate around key issues, such as children’s rights. This section of the exhibition will explore the methods which the charity used to raise fund and engage the public.

The Save the Children Fund has launched various large-scale campaigns to raise funds for its programmes. Key initiatives include the Penny-a-Week appeal, various incarnations of Save the Children Week, and anniversary celebrations, such as for their 75th birthday. A variety of events and promotional material were developed and created to support these campaigns, including posters, stickers, t-shirts and activity packs.

Syria's children are in desperate need of help. In Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq hundreds of thousands of refugee children face a bitter winter of sub-zero temperatures. Many live in flimsy tents or in buildings with no heating, electricity or hot water and have little or no winter clothing.

Save the Children is helping children recover from their experiences within Syria and across the region, to make sure they can access education and to ensure that families have the basic necessities they need to survive including healthcare, warm clothes, nutritious food and winter shelter materials.

Lega Navale Italiana - Sez.

An injured ethnic Uzbek refugee, fled from clashes in Osh, walks along a refugee camp near the Kyrgyz-Uzbek border, after escaping to Uzbekistan, in the village of Yorkishlak some 400 km (249 miles) east of Tashkent, June 15, 2010. The violence in Kyrgyzstan appears to have stopped spreading and may be diminishing, a senior U.S. official told Reuters on Tuesday, adding that there was still an urgent need to restore order and provide aid.
