The global humanitarian organization Save the Children honored Senator Bob Corker (R-TN) (seen here on left) with its “Congressional Champion for Real and Lasting Change Award” for 2010 at the Hyatt Regency in Washington, DC on May 5, 2010.
The award, presented by Save the Children’s Board of Trustees member and former Senate Majority Leader, Bill Frist, MD, (seen here on right) is bestowed on members of the U.S. Congress who show outstanding leadership, extraordinary commitment and vigorous support for helping children in need around the world.
On the eve of Mother’s Day, Senator Corker, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was recognized for the leading role he played in championing the “Global Child Survival Act of 2009.” The Act seeks to protect the lives of millions of newborns, children and mothers who die each year needlessly from preventable and treatable causes.

In humanitarian situations across the world, children are likely to make up half or more of the population affected by conflicts or disasters. On October 29, 2012, the Child Protection Working Group (CPWG) launched a long-awaited set of interagency Minimum Standards for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action developed as common guidelines for the global humanitarian community. USAID’s Neil Boothby, UNICEF’s Annette Lyth, and Mike Penrose from Save the Children discussed the new standards at a press conference at the United Nations Office at Geneva. Save the Children is providing shelter assistance to Safaa's whole family (who are staying in a half-built house with no ceiling), specialist emotional support to her grandmother Jamila's* children and grandchildren, and employing one of Jamila's daughters in the Save the Children-supported community centre. She is using her pay to buy food and water for the family. Safaa*, who stopped talking in Syria and was only able to cry, has now started talking and playing again.
Grandmother Jamila is also the Team Leader of a group of Syrian refugee women involved in a small Save the Children advocacy project, working to ensure that Syrian refugee voices are heard at the highest level.
Thousands of children and their families continue to stream into neighbouring countries. Most of those who've escaped are living in makeshift shelters, unsuitable buildings or in overcrowded camps, amid growing shortages of food, medicine and water..
Save the Children is helping children recover from their experiences within Syria and across the region, to make sure they can access education and to ensure that families have the basic necessities they need to survive including healthcare, warm clothes, nutritious food and shelter materials.

Syrian refugees have been pouring into Jordan in their thousands to escape the violence in Syria. They now live in tents in the desert of northern Jordan where conditions are harsh and the camp authorities are underfunded and struggling to meet the basic needs of the overwhelming numbers of refugees arriving each day. Over sixty five per cent of camp inhabitants are children.
