zeroeye: Very cool!

I'm lucky enough to live a short distance from the east coast of Yorkshire. Last night we decided to have Fish and Chips sat on the beach, not far from where we sat was this discarded toy starfish. It has been recycled!

This is an Eastward view of the Salton Sea shoreline taken in Desert Shores CA. It is apparent how the sea has retreated over time leaving a salty wasteland.

The Salton Sea was accidentally created in 1905 when the Colorado River irrigation system to the Imperial Valley was breached and for 2 years flowed uncontrolled into a dry lake bed to create the Salton Sea.

During the 1950's and 1960's, each year ~1.5 million people (including the Hollywood celebs) visited the “Salton Riviera”. Over time, without a major source of fresh water the salinity of the lake increased to more than twice that of the oceans. Now it has limited appeal to humans and wildlife.

All hope is not lost and there are continuing efforts to Save the Sea, www.SaveOurSea.info.

"Save our seas" on a visit to Cape Town in May 2010. Impressive vessel! I could not get a better capture as I had to stick the lens through the security barrier. :-)

Elegant sea slug (Okenia elegans)

Sea slugs are an amazingly colourful bunch of creatures compared with their land-based counterparts. Belonging to the order nudibranch meaning ‘naked gill’, sea slugs have no shell or mantle to protect them or to retreat into. However, they are able to defend themselves successfully by producing toxins and irritants from special skin glands.
