Matera is unique! The Sassi that can be seen here are inhabited in the upper right part of the picture.
The remaining part is currently being turned into a museum that will show life in the Sassi (partly until 1976).
Matera is a World Heritage Site and became European Capital of Culture in 2019.
La cattedrale della Madonna della Bruna e di Sant'Eustachio fu costruita in stile romanico pugliese nel XIII secolo sullo sperone più alto della Civita che divide i due Sassi. Fu completata nel 1270
SASSI DI MATERA - The most spectacular City in Italy, the ancient neighbourhoods, known as sassi, are a series of grottoes carved out of limestone, teetering on the edge of a ravine.
Until the 1950s, Matera was a source of shame for Italy, a place of poverty, malaria and high rates of infant mortality, where people lived in caves without electricity, running water or sewage and indesperate conditions were people living in; between 1953 and 1968 about half of the 30,000 population were moved to new homes in the modern part of the city.

Carlo Levi’s book Christ Stopped at Eboli raised awareness of the desperate conditions people were living in and about half of the 30,000 population were moved to new homes in the modern part of the city between 1953 and 1968.

Unique and very ancient place, Matera, with its Sassi, offers one of the most fascinating show in the world.
I'm lost in these twisted and hot roads under the sun of summer.
Sometimes my gaze wandered over the roofs until laying on the blue sky beyond the stone horizon.

Via Santa Cesarea, Matera, Basilicata, Italia
Matera counts about 55.000 inhabitants, is located 400 metres above sea level and is 45 km from the seaside.
Much appreciated and renowned for its Sassi districts, the town also boasts other charming and beautiful buildings.
The Sassi district is the ancient heart of the city of Matera.
The Sassi surround the Civita and constitute a city unto itself, completely carved out of the face of the calcareous rock -what is known as tufa stone. The Sassi district is a system made of dwellings carved out of the steep slopes of a deep valley with surprising and unusual features called the ‘Gravina’.
Elegant and multi-faceted buildings are interspersed with underground mazes and cave labyrinths, forming one single stunning landscape.

The Sassi di Matera ("Stones of Matera" in English) are ancient cave dwellings in the Italian city of Matera, Basilicata. Situated in the old town, they are composed of the Sasso Caveoso and the later Sasso Barisano.
The Sassi originate from a prehistoric troglodyte settlement and are suspected to be among the first human settlements in Italy. There is evidence that people were living here as early as the year 7000 BC.
The Sassi are houses dug into the calcarenitic rock itself, which is characteristic of Basilicata and Apulia, locally called "tufo" although it is not volcanic tuff or tufa.
Matera is the only place in the world where people can boast to be still living in the same houses of their ancestors of 9,000 years ago.
Until the late 1980s this was considered an area of poverty, since many of these houses were, and in some cases still are, uninhabitable. Current local administration, however, has become more tourism-oriented, and it has promoted the regeneration of the Sassi with the aid of the European Union, the government, UNESCO, and Hollywood.
