Sadly, after spending 14 years in Sam's company, we have decided the kindest thing to do is have him put to sleep. His health had been declining since before Christmas, although he had still been eating well and following us around most of the time. He has been a wonderful companion over those years, but the last couple of days he has hardly been able to walk, and the whole family agreed taking him to the vet would be the kindest thing. Just got back now - I think it's the hardest thing I've ever had to do!
We adopted Sam from a rescue centre in 2000, when Sam was about 2 (Matt was 10 and JJ was 6). We fell in love with him at first sight when we saw him across a field! Apparently his previous owners had taken him to the police asking him to be put down, as he had bitten someone, but his owners had been drunk and sat on him - so you would be tempted to bite someone in those circumstances!! Sam has never bitten anyone willingly since - he has been the most gentle dog you could have.
I have put together a collection of photos from over the years we have had him, from the time we rescued him up until this week, as a tribute. I hope you enjoy it.
It was hard to find music to accompany these photos and videos, but I decided on "Oh What a Life", but the American Authors, one of my fave bands at the moment.
Sam's Branch Falls in western North Carolina is always a nice waterfall to visit. We hit this one a couple of weeks ago. Flow was a bit down but it actually gave more character to the main drop.
It can be a bit tricky to find the first time. There are no trail markers but there is a small pull out to park. You'll notice a steep short path into the woods. That's it. Getting up isn't too bad but be careful coming back down. Then it's a pretty short level walk. Once you see the falls there is a path down to your left. Take that down to the stream. You'll have to maneuver around large boulders to get your shots. If you had continued on the path, you would reach the top of the falls but you really don't see anything but the ledge. Do not cross the stream in deeper water as you'll likely be swept over the falls.

This was taken a while back with my friend Sam. It was more of an experiment with night photography, which is something I need to get used to if I were to carry on taking photos after work.

We have had some pretty amazing weather for what is almost the middle of October. This day it was high 70's and sunny. We spent the day at Quarry Park walking, talking and shooting nature. Sam makes it hard to shoot the birds and the bees and the leaves and the trees, as she is herself a wonder of nature.
What's this? A man? Sam is actually the first guy I have done a shoot with. Sam's partner is Eliza, who I have took pics with a few times in the past, and we did this shoot together for an eyewear boutique. I like the little bit of glare off the glasses in this pic.

Konoto would not let Sam leave until he explained something to her. "When we were examining things at Nosmo King's shop, you said you found a clue that would help you solve a second mystery. I'm curious. Just what was that mystery?"
"Ah, simple," Sam replied. "I thought you would have figured it out on your own."
Konoto looked puzzled. "Me? Why, you're the detective. I'm trying my best to be a good Ninja. Detective work isn't my specialty or training."
"Ah, you are wrong, Konoto. You have what it takes to be a good detective and a good Ninja. You have to follow the evidence."
"I recall you showed me that piece on the one costume in Nosmo's window. But I really didn't get what you saw."
"Ah, that's where I knew we could catch this thief red handed. That small piece of thread you saw in the costume that Nosmo made was the trick in knowing how the jewel thief used the pockets in the costume she wore to get that gem. Once she had it, it was to be like Elvis and leave the building."
"I remember. That's the heartache in this whole thing," Konoto said somewhat dejectedly.
"But," Sam assured her, "you interrupted her plan and she had to leave that garment, but not before pulling the one string to release the pocket to get the gem. You actually caught her off guard and that sent this mystery into over time for her as she had to figure a way to leave. But there was one more 'invisible' piece of evidence I detected at the scene."
"What was that?"
"Ah, the Avon Pearl Perfume! I smelled it, too! Then I knew I was on the right track."
'You're joking, right?" Konoto asked in unbelief.
"No, Joe Kinwright is the stage manager!" Sam laughed. "But I am telling the truth. Without your help, we wouldn't have solved this mystery in the time we did. Now you can rest as that oriental gem is back in its place and your honor and dignity are restored."
"Thank you for putting up with me," Konoto said. "I do hope that we can see each other again." Konoto had become fond of Sam, even though all she saw him wear was that one hat and he always carried around his magnifying glass.
"I do, too!" Sam said bashfully.

No idea which but the granddaughters named the dragonfly Samantha since it seemed irritated when it was called by a masculine name. That's per the granddaughters.
This same dragonfly has been with me for days. I looked it up and they live for quite a while considering.
Here's how I acquired "Sam" - I was working in the yard and I always pick up interesting branches, twigs, wood pieces because of my aunt. Now that's another story but she was in Who's Who of American Artists during her lifetime so I remember early in life being told to look at the beauty of everything. Anyway, I put a couple of small branches and a couple of pieces of a limb on the table in the backyard. Shortly after that Sam appeared. Sam's been around a week now. Sam disappears a little after the sun sets and is back shortly after sunrise, patrols the backyard for bugs and returns to the twigs.
