This saltwater marsh is a protected area which allows baby salmon to take refuge until they get large enough to swim to the Pacific Ocean about 500 meters in the distance.

The tricolored heron also know as the Louisiana Heron is a midsized member of the genus Egretta. This species can reach a length between 24-26 inches (61-66 centimeters) with a wingspan of approximately 36 inches (91 centimeters). The tricolored heron is named for its distinct coloration. It has a dark slate-blue colored head and upper body, a purple chest, and white underparts. This species also has a long, slender neck and bill, and is the only dark heron with light underparts.
Tricolored herons inhabit fresh and saltwater marshes, estuaries, mangrove swamps, lagoons, and river deltas.They can be found from Massachusetts, down through the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean, to northern Brazil. Breeding sites can also be found on the Pacific Coast from Baja California down to Ecuador. Tricolored herons are widespread, permanent residents in Florida, although they are less common in some parts of the Panhandle.
I found this one on an overcast (cloudy) day at Joe Overstreet Landing, Lake Kissimmee, Florida.

Taken on my trip to the Daintree Rain Forest in Queensland in 2016, from the safety of a flat bottomed boat. These things lie dormant for hours, waiting for an unsuspecting animal, or tourist, to pass by!

Great Salt Lake is the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere and the eighth-largest lake in the world. It is located in the northern part of the state of Utah and has a substantial impact on the local area. With a maximum depth of 11 metres (35 ft.), Salt Lake is fed by three rivers and greatly impacts the regional weather. Once in a while, I like to go back and look at what I photographed over the years. In June 2006 I was in the US State of Utah with my Canon Powershot Pro 1 that i still use.
The saltwater crocodile is a crocodilian native to saltwater habitats and brackish wetlands from India's east coast across Southeast Asia and the Sundaic region to northern Australia and Micronesia. It has been listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List since 1996. It was hunted for its skin throughout its range up to the 1970s, and is threatened by illegal killing and habitat loss. It is regarded as dangerous for people who share the same environment.

The island of Cape Cod has many large salt water marshes many which are listed also as bird sanctuaries where human intrusion is not allowed.
Most plants cannot live in saltwater, since the water drowns their roots and the salt poisons their systems. Seaweed, however, is not a true plant and does not use systems that can be waterlogged. It has thick, rubbery stems that protect it from the corrosive ocean water, and uses simplified versions of roots and leaves to hold it in place and absorb sunlight. More complicated types of seaweed even have specialized bladders that allow it to float.

The Saltwater Crocodile is the largest living reptile in the world and a fearsome predator that will eat anything it can get between its jaws, including humans. Males grow to 20 feet long (6 meters) and top the scales at 3,300 pounds (1,500 kilograms). Saltwater crocs occur from eastern India down through Indonesia, New Guinea, and into northern Australia. The crocs tend to be very coastal but contrary to the name, live in more than just saltwater. They’re also happy in brackish water (mixed salinity) and freshwater rivers. We had the time of our lives renting (or hiring, as the Brits and Aussies say) a little boat from the campground we stayed at and cruising the Mary River. Three weeks after I took this picture, having returned home to the United States, a news story about a fatal Australian crocodile attack caught my eye. I was stunned to read that the location was the very spot we had just visited. The campground manager, Erin, was quoted in the article. We had just visited with Erin earlier that month, face-to-face! While unlikely, there's even a small chance that this very crocodile was the one involved in the attack. The story was that a group of young men were celebrating a friend’s 30th birthday and drinking beer. A dare was given to swim across the river. The group reached the opposite shore but on their way back, a young man was suddenly taken by a crocodile. He was briefly seen struggling and then seen no more. While tragic, his death was entirely avoidable; the result of a very poor decision. Remember folks, when you enter rivers filled with apex predators, you are no longer at the top of the food chain. Midshipman Fish belong to the genus Porichthys of toadfishes. They are distinguished by having photophores (which they use to attract prey and after which they are named, reminding some of a naval uniform's buttons) and four lateral lines. Typical midshipman fishes, such as the plainfin midshipman (Porichthys notatus), are nocturnal and bury themselves in sand or mud in the intertidal zone during the day. At night they float just above the seabed. Some species have venomous dorsal spines and are capable of inflicting serious injuries if handled.
Each spring, they emerge from the depths of the Pacific Ocean to breed on the beach. They overwhelm the beach at low tide, wedge themselves beneath rocks and excavate a nest in the rocks and sand.
The max length recorded is 38 centimeters (about 15 inches); and Type I males usually weigh in around . 350 grams (or just over 3/4 of a pound)

Badwater basin, Death Valley National Park. It rained in the park yesterday, and given ocean temperatures, the odds of an extended wet El Nino weather pattern this winter are being presented as 80%. Hopefully we'll get water on the salt flats several times this season!
