Pinacoteca di Brera - Milano

Library of Light is a rotating cylindrical sculpture 18 metres in diameter created by the English artist and designer Es Devlin, and stands in the centre of the 17th-century Cortile d'Onore of the Pinacoteca di Brera. For two weeks, visitors are invited to step onto the rotating library and immerse themselves in texts read aloud by Es Devlin in response to the Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense's immense collection of 1.5 million volumes and the hundreds of works of art in the Pinacoteca. The sound work also features the voice of the English actor Benedict Cumberbatch, who reads a reflection by the theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli on the concept of time.

The heart of the installation is the luminous shelves that house the over 2,000 volumes selected for the theme "Thought for Humans", identified by the Salone del Mobile as central for the 2025 edition. Visitors are invited to contribute texts of their choice, further expanding the Library of Light during its opening to the public, after which the books will become part of the Milan Library System, continuing their journey through the hands and minds of readers. This initiative is a gift to the city, desired by the Salone del Mobile in collaboration with the Pinacoteca di Brera.

Seen at Tom Dixon's stand, featuring his amazing glass lamps very "Space Age" inspired and Universal Robots picking them up delicately, turning around, backing them up flawlessly.

Left: table light called "Melt" , a distorted orb-shaped glass lamp in a silver finish, emitting a mildly hallucinogenic light and hot-blown glass effect with a multiplicity of internal reflections from the integral LED when on, while it turns to have a mirror-finish and perfect reflective effect when off. Behind this, in the far left, there is the same lamp but in a copper finish.

Center: "Globe", a portable rechargeable led lamp in a gradient metallized smoked finish. A similar one is attached at the arm of the robot. Very appreciable the gamut of multiplied reflections mirrored inside the sphere.

These wireless lamps offer up to 10 hours of battery life, so they can be easily moved, placed and re-positioned wherever in a room without the proximity of an electric plug.

In the imaginary of Tom Dixon, he has conceived his lights inspired by melting glaciers and pictures of deep space.

( I'll keep up-loading many more photos from my reportage "Anteprima Design Week / Salone del Mobile" along the whole month of May).

Installation at Euroluce 2023, directly shot in Black & White.

Area "It all comes from Above" of the Czechoslovakian Company Lasvit, specialized in the production of illumination systems and glass objects from the Bohemian tradition.

Artistic installation entitled CLOUD, signed by Maxim Velčovský. This huge rainy cloud with many lights from within, steadily changed its colours and different dimming in a totally dark hall. The effect has been stunning and almost hypnotic.

My photo of one of the stands I liked the most.

The installation of ETHIMO, conceived by Studio AMDL Circle and Michele De Lucchi, proposed a dive into Nature with exclusively natural materials such as a floor in ears of wheat and hay and walls of straw. It's been so very nice to walk on... I would have wanted to be shoeless!

Ethimo is an Italian company specialized in high-end outdoor and gardening furniture.

Nature, innovation, design, natural colours and materials, are the core concepts characterizing its collections, inspired by the Mediterranean style, mood and nuances.

Another thing I found very smart and daring was that in this stand there were no sample products on show that they produce and commercialize. All the space was offered to visitors for the pleasure of this cool sensorial experience.

Well, just watched their catalogue and saw some essence wood lounge beds, gazebos, sofas, swings and outdoor gymn stations that are to die for !

Another diptych showing some views and details of the airy modular boat sail shaped structure of the Trade Fair buildings in Milano-Rho, designed by the architect Massimiliano Fuksas.

This architectural and design solution allows to continuously connect the inside with the outside of the fair pavillions.

The transparencies and airy environment is obtained by a combination of glass, plexiglass, steel, cement, water and a modular structure based on the triangle and the shape of many boat sails.

Wide glowing neon circular lamp (diameter about 1 meter)

While leds had a very small part at Euroluce 2023, the neon lights registered a big revamping as well as the circle and the sphere as main basic shapes used for most of the lamps of the leading lighting manufactoring companies (illuminotecnica).

Among the colours presented for the up-coming trends, the most applied has been for sure the electric blue.

Again Bohemian crystal for this amazing dynamic lighting installation, covering a surface of more than 100sqm.

It's the so called "Crystal Grid" by the Czechoslovakian Company PRECIOSA, an imponent stucture of crystal neon tubes displayed from the ceiling and suspended until around two meters from the floor, almost touching the heads of the visitors, invited to this show in a sort of wide black box like in a cinema. The crystal tubes had an intense vibrant half golden and half optical white light. This structure merged a sounding system, called "Crystal Beat" interacting with rhythmic light pulsations and musical notes that the visitors could play in total freedom.

The fusion between lights and sound has produced awesome instants of pure magic.

At a first glance, the camera obturator would have been totally blinded by the extreme light, so I went for a rather fast exposure with closure priority and had to edit the photo quite a lot to obtain what the eyes could actually not totally see: the true colour was golden, not white as it could appear, and the neon tubes in crystal, apparently white shiny and with a smooth surface, were instead mostly embossed and worked out with gold, probably to give a warmer light effect, while the studs connecting the neon lights, appearing at our eyes in a chromed tone, were, instead, all in brass.

Most of the photos I've seen online, much better than mine, don't however show the heavily worked surface of the crystal tubes, embossed and decorated with gold, so, I'm rather satisfied with mine.

A really luxury installation that lent strong visual and auditive emotions.

"The Lights of Tomorrow" encompasses several exhibitions of the Milano Design Week. This, in particular, has been aimed at showing examples of new research products in the lighting industry with a particular attitude for sustainability, energy saving and reduction of lighting pollution.

My composition merging two installations on exhibit,

right: installation "Spaghetti" by the designer Giandomenico Belotti.

left: two frames of a videomapping on the model chairs called "LaLeggera" projected by the designer Riccardo Blumer. This chair was awarded the "Compasso D'Oro ADI" in 1998 and is exhibited at MoMA NY, at the Triennale Milano and at the Centre G. Pompidou in Paris. It's a stacking chair with structure in solid maple or ash, maple or oak veneer. The internal structure is in injected polyurethane foam and the finishing in clear laquage or in colored stains. In a break from the painful (for me) process of editing and up-loading photos for my new Album "Anteprima Design Week" where many more pictures are yet to come, I've done this work using four of my photos taken at Euroluce 2023: 3 photos of special glass neon tubes displayed all over from the ceiling to two meters above from the flooring of a peculiar dark hall (exhibitor "Preciosa") and 1 photo of golden pepitas.

It was a while I was missing to do new Planispheric Art and this here has indeed been inspired by my awesome visit at the Salone del Mobile. No need to say I had fun to digitally paint over in my freehand style.

Milano Design Week - Euroluce 2023

Among the exhibitions and events encompassed under the name "The City of Light", the fair Euroluce has offered an Exhibition dedicated to creative works made with or inspired by the light bulbs, called "Fiat Bulb - La Sindrome di Edison".

In a portion of a pavillion, it has been re-created a section of an imaginary airport, a baggage reclaim area with carousel and conveyor belt where many boxes containing works by artists and designers inspired by the bulb light and bulb structure have been exhibited.

Instead of passengers, here visitors have been called to turn around the carousel and watch every single work on show.

I believe this show has also been a "memory" tribute to the primary incandescent lights and the warm illumination they produce.

Here, a view from outside the show, where the watery effect is obtained by the transparent curtains made of windproof pvc slats.

A crystal beads suspended chair, receiving and reflecting a burst of light.

My compo to show this swing chair in its contest (to the right) and a close-up of the same chair, showing its intervowen structure with crystal faceted beads and a shape that is continuously changing via some almost invisible yarns connected to a silent engine.

To the far right, coloured blowed glass bells and spheres complete the display.

And all this to show how lighting or, as we say, Illuminotecnica, can determine the ambiance of a space, the mood and let things appear as they have an inner light. The reflective surface of cut crystals can provoke a burst of intense and yet concentrated illumination by means of invisible deemed little lights.

It was very crowded here and many people standing in front or aside the swing to take photos or selfies. This has been the less crowded moment... A photographer is though visible sitting on the yellow couch, partially hidden by the beads laces, exalted by his dark clothes ;-)

In the centre of the photo background, two persons relaxing in a nearby lounge, partially separated by dark curtains.

I wanted to chop them off my compo but then I remembered that friend Joachim asserts: "Leave the people on your photo, it gives more dynamicity and sense of reality". So I left them, and probably he is right, vielend Dank lieber Joachim !

This is a view from the inside of the fair which I very much like as it connects outdoor with indoor, allowing to continuously breath fresh air while exiting a pavillion to enter another one.

Concrete, crystal glass, plexiglass, iron and a wide pool lining the whole pedestrian track contribute to give a very harmonious modern ambiance.

Carrying on my reportage on the Design Week,

my diptych to illustrate a collaboration between the English Designer Tom Dixon and Universal Robots, collaborative robots for picking, depalletization, singulation, sorting and production of fulfillment projects.

Here, a robotic model is able to pick up the most fragile and difficult object, a spheric glass lamp by Dixon and moving it around, shaking it, laying it down and picking it up again with absolute zero flaws.

This lamp is a spheric glass led light, in full coherence with Dixon's tastes, obsessed with spherical objects (I'm too!) showing what he asserts to be his perpetual quest for the purest forms. This light with a metallised opalescent copper finish (can be just clear too or in silver as in the forefront of my left shot) is highly mirrored and perfectly reflective during daylight but, what amazed me the most, when switched on, it reveals a multiplicity of internal reflections, too cool. This is appreciable by both my photos that I hope can lend how much this ambient and situation has fascinated me.

And you don't see me mirrored in the globes, although I was just photographing in front, isn't that magic ?

About the Designer Tom Dixon there would be a lot to say.

I will just mention that he designs e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g, from furniture to candles, passing by textiles, home interior items, crockery, stationary, beauty & body care products and even the inside bulbs of his lamps!

He has designed and furbished lots of restaurants and other premises. What I like of him the most is his style of presenting his creations with minivideos & music, and, you can rest assured, he chooses the soundtracks to match them perfectly!

I have taken all my photos "freehands" with no tripod and always in manual modality.

A diptych showing the two sort of spider structures, called

"Il Ragno", completely covered by a steel roofing, at the Trade Fair Fieramilano-Rho, used as convention and conference halls.

The headquarters recently hosted the new edition of

Salone del Mobile / Euroluce while the "Fuorisalone" is everywhere downtown and animates especially in the evening.

The entire architecture is made with a modular structure, integrating glass, iron, steel, cement, but also lighter materials like aluminium, plexiglass.

The glass and iron walls of the entire complex, looking like boat sails, have been projected by the architect Massimiliano Fuksas.

One spider is positioned at the beginning of the visiting track and the second at the far end of the track, close to the last pavillions. The pedestrian floor (much larger than just a corridor) is lined by a long and wide pool.

Inside the fair arrive both the underground and the fast long-distance trains.

The whole perimeter of the fair is pedestrian area, so it is possible to stay outside and walk either outside or inside to reach each pavillion.

I've been lucky to arrive quite early, before the opening of the gates but was standing in a long line. At a certain point, I flashed a question and approached some security men and, while I was asking them for an indication, the gates opened and I found myself among the first visitors to enter !

This fact allowed me few minutes and many meters of empty spaces to photograph some views at the architectures without almost anybody in front of me (and my camera ;-)

To stay "free hands", I didn't take with me a tripod...Oh, and I wished to have had a wide angle lens...

Exhibitions kermesse entitled "The City of Lights"

Installazione di Maurizio Nannucci

Among the most powerful interpreters of artificial light in contemporary art, ideally invites to imagine the contrary, a creative attitude, virtuous and curious.

This neon light installation, presented in preview at the Salone del mobile, will be definitely positioned and hosted at the Politecnico (Architecture University) in Milano as a sign and symbol of the importance an high value of School and Education.

Nannucci has frequently used neon glass coloured tubes as visual and conceptual Art to show his statements with the strength to last. And when a work becomes lettering or, better, WordArt, viewers are invited to read...

Other quotes by him are: "New Times for other Ideas", "Changing place, changing time, changing thoughts, changing future"...

"Everything might be different"...

"You can imagine the opposite" is a powerful exhortation to think the exact opposite, because, as Bruno Munari used to ask in his Mantra "But can't it be done another way?", another possibility always exists.

Special thanks to my model Celeste (what a better name?) for having posed for me meeting my request to not stand still, but, instead, to keep walking to reach a more dynamic effect in real motion.

Euroluce 2023

My interest has been to show some scenarios I had the privilege to see and wanted to put together some objects, lights and modular structures I liked.

These are examples on how Euroluce showed different ways to use in a parsimonious way the electric light and, since the top keyword has been "Sustainability", I will be sustainable with my non-pro profile and spare up-loads from my yet reduced quota, putting 4 photos in the same diptych, a quatropod (or a quadriptych ?)

My compo is entitled "Addy hasn't the Silver, she has the quick Gold on! " and is dedicated to my dear Friend

Addy Van Rooij aka Adriënne.

No need for presentations, I believe almost all know her for her Art and her long lasting volunteer work as Admin of many groups.

I want to dedicate to Addy this work for celebrating a lil project we have in common and our friendship. May we be brightened and enlightened, cheers and blessings!

In this picture:

- left : a large knitted fabric in gold yarns can be wholly illuminated by just a micro light (the silhouhette is not another fabric but the beautiful shadow formed by the gold lighted by this micro light positioned to the left on a long thin black bar).

- Right: a huge ceiling of golden pepitas that I could fit in a small space but, instead, was supended on top of a very large hall. All the pepitas were illuminated by just low voltage deemed micro lights and able to refract and multiply the overall illumination. Sustainable, yes, because not in gold but, probably, made with just crumpled and tinted aluminum film.

And, among asters (or pepitas, lol) and a golden moon, a very strange mystic jewel, precious as handmade, like a little shrine treasuring some drops...of light... (See details by zooming in)

Finally the round and triangular lamp is a truly genial one: just one little light bulb surrounded by a system of mirrors can multiply the light reflection infinitely, lightening a large area by consuming almost nothing. (Spotted at the Exhibition "The Lights of Tomorrow").

Satellite Pavillion

Carrying on my photo reportage on the Milano Design Week, two huge installations with Sun and Moon, seen at the Satellite Pavillion, a special hall dedicated to young designers.

My photo: has been obtained by two panos, then merged together to show both planets in the same image (accordingly to the sustainable philosophy and spare on the limited up-loads quota. I think, anyway, that, combining the two visions makes a bigger impact. Viewers could see them both in the same area but, as they were so big and suspended in a very wide pavillion, it would have been impossible to capture them well in the same photo).

The spotlights attached around the elliptical perimeter of the glass and aluminum roof and directed solely towards the planets, could make the scenario visibly three-dimensional and very spectacular by just illuminating the two huge spheres in an almost dark room.

My reportage and footage in the new Album entitled "Anteprima Design Week" will carry on with further up-loads in the next days.

This little installation was unexpected... It made me extremelly happy as I've been researching a lot on the blindfold wave and the artist / architect Corrado Levi, one of my most favourite sculptors, has been indeed one of the beginners of this theme and wave and an important exponent of the Industrial Art & Design Movement.

At Euroluce, the biennal exhibition on lights for the interior and outdoor design and furniture, I found this little installation of blindfold heads which are glowing lamps too. These are multiples, in plastic with a genuine surgical bandage, no longer those sculptures totally handmade by Levi (in chock or in bronze casting) as these have been produced for the global market and are sold online too. Anyway, even if more serial and simple, I still like them a lot. One of my dear Friends has a handmade total white blindfold head by Levi, dated several years ago and I had the pleasure to see, touch and photograph it.

Those who are interested can see one photo in my friends collective profile at this link:

My diptych shows the same head, entitled by the author "Edipo Head", from two perspectives, frontal and 3/4, photographed at their display hight of about 1,2 meters from the floor, without trypod.

An entire versatile workstation for a soloist, apt to perfectly isolate the person from the surrounding environment, extremely functional, comfy and even colourful. Both wood table (oak) and steel shelf (visible in the photo on the right) are collapsable. The mini sofa is very comfortable and has a detachable power bank that will charge wirelessly phones and laptops. The lamp, a tiny shelf for glasses/stationary and a coats hook complete the display.

This "ensemble" is called "Bob Solo", lol, and can be moved everywhere in a room thanks to its four wheels.

It occupies the minimum space, giving the maximum comfort and functionality. I think it looks like aesthetically cool too.

The reason of my diptych is to frame two different nice expressions by Sebastian, showroom manager of the Swedish producing Company "Blå Station", who kindly accepted to pose for me.

It's been projected by the designers Stefan Borselius and Thomas Bernstrand who meant to conceive a room in the room or, as they said, a nook for privacy. Founder, and main furniture designer is Börge Lindau.

This here has been seen outside the stand by Arper, presenting its headline "Find beauty in Reinvention", with a new line of chairs, preminently made with recycled detergent bottles in PP (Polypropylene) mixed with a bit of new PVC material and strenghtened with glass fibres.

Sustainability has been one of the main keywords of this new edition of the biennial Fair and Exhibition EuroLuce.

This to the left is the first of a trilogy of photos that will illustrate the interior design items by Kartell that I liked the most and will be added in the next days at my new Album (in progress) entitled

"Anteprima Design Week" on my selection of the novelities and products/companies I liked the most while visiting the "Salone del Mobile" and the biennial Exhibition/Fair "EuroLuce 2023".

Milano Design Week

- Salone del Mobile -

Cool camouflage, seen in a privé reserved to customers of a stand proposing bathroom furniture.

Notice: beside their stands with products displays, most of the Companies exhibiting at the Salone had a privé space too with many lounge facilities like cafeterias, banqueting, desks and sofas, sort of "parloirs" dedicated to meetings with customers.

Further photos + descriptions in my new Album (in progress)

"Anteprima Design Week" and new up-loads on the "Salone del Mobile" and Euroluce 2023 during the whole month of May.
