Saint Nicholas of Myra (traditionally 15 March 270 – 6 December 343), also known as Nicholas of Bari, was an early Christian bishop of Greek descent from the maritime city of Myra in Asia Minor (modern-day Demre, Turkey) during the time of the Roman Empire. Because of the many miracles attributed to his intercession, he is also known as Nicholas the Wonderworker. Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, repentant thieves, children, brewers, pawnbrokers, toymakers, unmarried people, and students in various cities and countries around Europe. His reputation evolved among the pious, as was common for early Christian saints, and his legendary habit of secret gift-giving gave rise to the traditional model of Santa Claus ("Saint Nick") through Sinterklaas.
Baška Voda is a village and a municipality in Croatia in the Split-Dalmatia County.
It is located on the Adriatic coastline of Dalmatia, 10 kilometres northwest of Makarska.
The name Baška Voda is mythological in origin and is linked with Biston, the patriarch of the Thracian Biston tribe, son of Ares, the Greek god of war, and the goddess Calliope, protectress of water. The military fort and springs near Baška Voda bear out this theory. Some of the richest archaeological sites that have yielded finds from Roman times are on the heights of Gradina and its surroundings.
These include burial sites with urns, lamps, jewellery, coins with the head of Alexander Severus Aurelianus and headstones bearing the names of 13 of the ancient inhabitants of Baška Voda, the loveliest of which commemorates a boy called Ursinus, who died in a shipwreck between 100 and 150 AD.
In ancient times, the little village of Bast nestled by a freshwater spring which supplied the Biokovo area. During the 18th century, after the expulsion of the Turks, its inhabitant left the slopes of St. Ilija's (Elijah's) Ridge and descended to the shore, where they established Baška Voda, today a well-known tourist resort on the Makarska Riviera.
Baška Voda first appeared on the “Coranelli” geographical map, produced in 1688, as “Basca”. It was a small village which thrived on agriculture and fishing. The Late Baroque church of St. Lovro (Laurence), built in 1750, probably occupies an Antique site, while the parish church of St. Nikola (Nicholas), the patron saint of travellers and sailors, was built in the early 20th century.
Today, 6 December, is the name day of Saint Nicholas, the "original" Santa Claus!

The small Cycladic church of Agios Nikolaos in the old port of Mykonos.
Settled on a stretch of cobbles jutting out into the port, this small antique building with a dazzlingly blue dome is one of the most picturesque churches in town.
The church was initially built on an islet in the port which was later connected to the quay. The pier around the church was restored between 1908 and 1912. And benches outside the church offer a comfortable place to sit and enjoy the Mykonian skyline.
A very merry Christmas to one and all, Flickr/Facebook friends old and new. Hoping the new year brings you Health, Wealth and Happiness XXX

St. Nikolai, Greifswald
"With its almost 100 meter high tower, the medieval brick Gothic church towers over the Hanseatic city of Greifswald. From its viewing gallery you have an impressive view over the old town to the island of Rügen. [...]
Church construction began as early as the middle of the 13th century and the hall church was enlarged to a basilica during the construction period in the 14th century. In 1456 the Greifswald University was founded in the church. [...]
As in many northern German cities, the Gothic brick church bears the name of Saint Nicholas of Myra (around 285 - around 350), who was very popular as the patron saint of seafarers and merchants in the Middle Ages."

Valencia is the third largest city in Spain. Valencia is located on the Costa del Azahar on the Mediterranean Sea and is considered the birthplace of paella, one of the most famous dishes in Spanish cuisine. Valencia is also known as the orange city. Valencia is Spain's third economic engine, after Madrid and Barcelona. Valencia was founded in 138 BC. under the name Valentia Edetanorum, by a Roman leader. Valencia has a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and very mild winters. Valencia, like the entire region of Valencia, is officially bilingual; they speak both Spanish and Valencian. Valencian is very closely related to Catalan. Spanish Valencia is more than beach and paella.. If you are fond of gastronomy, enjoy the color and taste of fresh products and appreciate the delicious dishes, the variety and the quality of the cuisine, the Mercado Central of Valencia is a paradise not to be missed. Modernista market building with colorful tiles & a diverse collection of stalls, separated by type. Santos Juanes is a Roman Catholic church located next to the Mercado in the Mercat district of the city. The church is also called San Juan del Mercado because of its location next to the central market. The Church of San Nicolás de Bari and San Pedro Mártir is one of the architectural treasures of Valencia. The church is a place of worship, so there is a time for the Mass and another one for the cultural visit. Known as the Valencian Sistine Chapel, don't miss the opportunity to visit it.
The Church of San Nicolás is a Roman Catholic parish church in Valencian Gothic style. In the middle of El Carmen, in the historic center of Valencia, this church has some frescoes and after restoration some paintings were discovered. The church was founded in the 13th century. It became a parish in 1242 and it was one of the first twelve Christian parishes in Valencia. The church represents the perfect combination of the Gothic style with the Baroque decoration. The interior of the church was completed between 1690-1693 and was decorated in Baroque style by Juan Pérez Castiel. In 1981 it was declared a National Historic Art Monument and it was not until the 21st century that its architectural and pictorial restoration began. Inside the church we can see frescoes, depicting the life of Saint Nicholas of Bari and Saint Peter Martyr, designed by Antonio Palomino. The main altar is another masterpiece of this church, which contains some images of the two saints.

In the Netherlands, Sinterklaas ("Saint Nicholas", the patron saint of childeren) is celebrated on December 5th. Chocolate letters are a traditional gift.
Sinterklaas is not to be confused with Santa Claus.

Saint Nicholas's Cathedral, or simply the Cathedral (Stolnica), in Ljubljana (Slovenia). The earliest mention of a church in the site dates back to 1262. The present-day church was built in the Baroque style between 1701 and 1706, replacing an older gothic church which was burnt down in 1469, presumably by the Turks.
The light inside when I entered was beautiful. Just a stroke of luck, really. The image is a composite of 5 shots.
