The Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, commonly known as Saint Basil's Cathedral, is a Christian church in Red Square in Moscow, Russia and is regarded as a cultural symbol of the country. The building is shaped like the flame of a bonfire rising into the sky, a design that has no parallel in Russian architecture.
I had seen plenty of photos of St. Basil's, but nothing quite prepared me for the reality. I swear my camera groaned when it sensed my excitement.
Day 75/80
An incredibly busy day in Moscow with Alla, our local guide who has mellowed from the first day. She reads out group of 5 brilliantly.. The morning was spent in the Kremlin where the crowds were impossible and the lines endless. I don't know how she did it, but a quick word in the right ear (and a few Roubles I expect) and we were at the head of every queue.
Saint Basil's, Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, Moscow University, the cemetery, a cruise on the Moscow River; the pace was fairly cracking. Dinner was a meal in a private dining room at our hotel, we were served the best of Russian cuisine and wine. It was a banquet to knock your socks off.

St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, Russia, was built by Ivan the Terrible between 1555 and 1561. According to legend, the builder of this cathedral was blinded so that such a beautiful structure could never be built again. The cathedral is vividly colorful and contains redbrick towers that add to its beauty. The church’s design consists of nine chapels, each mounted with its individual dome that marks the assault on the city of Kazan.

Pokrovsky Cathedral which is better known as the Cathedral of St. Vasili is Orthodox church, an architectural monument which is one of the most famous symbols of Moscow and the whole Russia.
The temple was founded in 1552, upon the decree of Tsar Ivan the Terrible, in honor of the capture of the Kazan Khanate. The Temple was consecrated in honor of the Holy Trinity. In 1554 on its place Ivan the Terrible ordered to build the Cathedral of the Protection of the Virgin with the chapels which would commemorate the victory over the Tartars. People called the new temple the Protection of the Ditch, since the cathedral was built near a deep ditch which was along the eastern wall of the Kremlin.

St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, located in Red Square, is definitely a must-go visit in the Russian capital.
After the overnight train from Minsk, I arrived at Moscow Belorussky railway just after 5am on a Friday morning. It was incredibly peaceful on the three-mile walk from there to Red Square at that time of the morning, aside from a couple of small groups at the end of their night out.
Red Square itself was almost deserted at this time of the morning and it was great to see it with so few people around. One person turned up - a protestor with something written on a bedsheet, heading towards the Kremlin. A few people appeared out of nowhere and he was whisked off in the blink of an eye.
This is Saint Basil's Cathedral - one of the many beautiful buildings around Red Square.
