The tree this Owl is perched in - about 15 feet or four plus metres in height - is in an odd location for a mostly cautious bird. But it faces the west, and in the cold and windy weather we have been having the tree seems to offer some sort of basking point between hunting locations. The tree is close but pretty much inaccessible to people - and if someone tried to get too close the bird would have lots of warning.
I saw the bird first a couple of weeks ago after picking my dog up at the end of the day from her kennel, where she spends a bit of time when I am away for work. I did not have my camera and stopping was unrealistic for a variety of reasons. So I made a mental note to check back.
When I returned a few days later she was on a hydro pole not too far from the tree. So I found a place to wait and monitored her with my binoculars.
She moved in about twenty minutes later. I got out of my car and began securing whatever images I could, advancing as close as I thought was safe to avoid flushing the bird. But I think she felt pretty secure, and never deigned to glance at me.
Sadly the sun was not going to appear, and the dusk light was a challenge. But it has been a desire of mine for a long time to have images of a Snowy without any artifact of human behaviour in the frame - no fence posts or hydro poles. I have some of those and they are, I think, great images. I have posted some of them. But the tree is a neat perch.
I have cropped the image to remove distracting branches where possible.

My sweet boy was missing for nearly 50 hours--he made me a nervous wreck. Finally, this morning he made his way home~~soaking wet and very hungry.
He's grounded and can't go outside for a day or two.

It was a gray and rainy day here, and with all the water falling from the sky the ground is turning into a skating rink.
So I played it safe and stayed inside. I have a habit of falling on solid ground, so adding ice is a bad idea for me.
Luckily I was able to bring some colour into my world today with this.
The solemn weather had me feeling a little lethargic today so I thought something vibrant might just be what I needed to get motivation going!

I could tell you that a storm caught us out here, but that wouldn't be the whole story. The whole story would have to mention that we ventured out intentionally hoping to get caught by this storm, and we found the spot on the island right at the edge of the late day's light and the dark, brooding threat of the thunder storm rolling across the land. And then it started to rain. Hard. Hard enough that I was mildly concerned for my camera, even if it is Swedish built and all mechanical and was the choice of camera for use on the surface of the moon. But moments like that produce moments like this, and they are often quite worth the soaked clothes, wet cameras and mild risk of electrocution.
we went to west bay today to snorkel (i am learning to be more and more comfortable and i was thrilled to see a bunch of colorful fish and a sting ray)
we saw this on our way home.
each day i am truly blessed to be able to live on this island.
i never tire of it.. never.

A closer image of the outside. I am not that tall, only about 5'5" and had to really bend over, almost crawl into this "safe house." The County employee told me they are researching the records to see if they can find the documentation they need to put it on the historical register and preserve it. At this time it is only history that has been passed down from person to person, that is to say word of mouth. There is quite a history over the United States regarding "Sundown Towns" which practiced the "Sundown Laws."

OK, so it was before 10am on a Sunday morning and not many people about, when I spied this little bike. And I had a good giggle to myself.
But for my photo, I wanted something else going on in the background, and so waited a bit.
Three lots of Muggles wanted to know why I was standing in the rain with a camera near this bike, and when I explained they just looked at me as if I was mad ... which of course I am.
Anyways, I'd rather be mad and smile at simple things like this, than a Muggle who misses the pleasure of the little things in life.
And why B&W ... the first vehichle to come along was a bright red van!
The Rua Reidh lighthouse was our focus for visiting the coast north of Gairloch. The previous owners had disputed public access to the road and any visiting 'toggers' or walkers not staying at the lighthouse B+B could (allegedly) face a hostile reception. With the lighthouse now sold on, it is possible to park just a few hundred meters away rather than have to walk 3 miles from Melvaig, though the approach road is a little 'challenging'. It wasn't possible to get a perfect shooting position for the lighthouse, with a climb up a small hill giving the best compromise.
