It was a perfect day for the beach and even more perfect when we realized that the Space Shuttle Discovery was to launch that afternoon. We've seen many launches from our home in Central Florida, 50 miles (80+ kilometers) away. Here on the beach, we were separated by roughly the same distance, but instead of towns, highways and vegetation between us and the Kennedy Space Center, only the nearly open expanse of sand and sea. We were amazed to hear, after a few minutes, the faint remains of the once deafening roar of
liftoff.

Taken with my Nikon D60
At 5:02 pm EDT, Space shuttle Discovery roared into the atmosphere on a 14 day mission.
I was standing on the A Max Brewer Memorial Parkway, CR 402 which goes out to Canaveral National Seashore and Cape Canaveral.
After living in FL for 26 years (to the day!), I finally had the opportunity to witness a launch from less than 10 miles away.
What a treat. That was a nice B-day present.
I had wanted to see the launch up close since we moved to FL.
I highly recommend it. Not only was I able to view this fantastic spectacle, but I could hear the roar of the engines.
We were about 8 miles from the Launch pad to the West.
This is where I was standing.
So many people were parked and crowded at all the bridges and small parks. The traffic was horrendous, the sun a scorcher and all the great spots were taken. But it was still worth the travel time and traffic hassles.
Next time I will know where to park.
STS124-S-001 (October 2007) --- The STS-124/1J patch depicts the Space Shuttle Discovery docked with the International Space Station (ISS). STS-124/1J is dedicated to delivering and installing the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) known as Kibo (Hope) to the ISS. The significance of the mission and the Japanese contribution to the ISS is recognized by the Japanese flag depicted on the JEM Pressurized Module (JPM) and the word Kibo written in Japanese at the bottom of the patch. The view of the sun shining down upon the Earth represents the increased "hope" that the entire world will benefit from the JEM's scientific discoveries. The JPM will be the largest habitable module on the ISS and is equipped with its own airlock and robotic arm for external experiments. In addition to delivering and installing the JPM, the STS-124 crew will relocate the JEM Logistics Pressurized (JLP) module to its permanent home on the zenith side of the JPM. During three planned space walks, the crew will perform external ISS maintenance and JPM outfitting, as well as extensive robotic operations by the ISS, space shuttle, and JEM robotic arms. It will be the first time that three different robotic arms will be operated during a single space flight mission.
The NASA insignia design for shuttle flights is reserved for use by the astronauts and for other official use as the NASA Administrator may authorize. Public availability has been approved only in the form of illustrations by the various news media. When and if there is any change in this policy, which is not anticipated, it will be publicly announced.

Although I no longer work at the space center as a photographer, I work for the KSC credit union. We have branch offices out at the center so I have an access badge.
I took the opportunity of a weekend launch to go out to Complex 39 with my camera today.

Dear all,
thanks for supporting my enclosed application for a very cool contest by @ESA and @Arianespace
The prize is a trip to #Kourou to witness a launch of an @Arianespace rocket by posting a #SpaceSelfie and having attended one of the #SpaceTalks events.
The most retweeted and liked entries can win.
These @Spaceholix here already traveled around our world to see 3 #SpaceShuttle , 1 #Delta and 1 #Soyuz launch into the sky.
We shared many unforgettable memories with many friends from all around the globe and all walks of life over the past 12 years, since our first launch at #KSC Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex...
Soon I'll be adding a really surreal thing:
Spilling some beans here:
one of my artworks will be EXHIBITED THERE at #KSC in Florida
on 21.12.2018 at the #50thAnniversary of #Apollo8 #Earthrise celebrations UNDER #SpaceShuttle #Atlantis during the opening of the Constellation.Earth tour.
This is a wonderful project founded by astronauts
* Nicole Passonno Stott @Astro_Nicole * Ron Garan @Astro_Ron
* Anousheh Ansari @AnoushehAnsari
* Leland Melvin @Astro_Flow.
„This event will mark the launch of a worldwide movement, motivated by their experience in space, to inspire hope and positive change to ensure our planet is a thriving home for all.“
Such an honor to have my design #TheCreationOfSpaceInspiration being chosen together with masterpieces by 15 other inspiring #SpaceArtists from all around the world.
Many of them are also members of our wonderful #IAAA
IAAA - International Association of Astronomical Artists
So these posts by Nicole and their Simon Kregar Jr. - the art director of Constellation Foundation made me smile A LOT 😃

And yes, we‘d really LOVE to visit our #BucketList goal French-Guyana #Kourou 🚀

on 21.12.2018 at the #50thAnniversary of #Apollo8 #Earthrise celebrations UNDER #SpaceShuttle #Atlantis during the opening of the Constellation.Earth tour.
This is a wonderful project founded by astronauts
* Nicole Passonno Stott @Astro_Nicole * Ron Garan @Astro_Ron
* Anousheh Ansari @AnoushehAnsari
* Leland Melvin @Astro_Flow.

More #ForrestGumpLikeMoments added to our #SharedMemories
All this - after having seen SpaceShuttle #Atlantis lift-off twice
( #STS115 in 2006 and #STS135 in 2011, where our #SocialMediaFairyTale began) and also #Shuttle #Endeavour #STS124 in 2008 with Ron Garan onboard - is somehow bringing things for these German #SpaceTweeps here to a full circle 🇩🇪 👪
And yes, we‘d really LOVE to visit our #BucketList goal French-Guyana #Kourou 🚀
And if my #SpaceSelfie wins I promise to @esa @esaoperations @ESA_de and @Arianespace I will design a(nother) special badge - especially for this event 🎨
😊 👪 🇩🇪 ✈️ 🌎 🚀

Dear all,
thanks for supporting my enclosed application for a very cool contest by @ESA and @Arianespace
