After a mighty rain the Stargazers have toppled over.

Lake Ninan, one of many salt flats in Western Australia. It might not have the fame of Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni, but it holds its own when it comes to raw, natural beauty. And with camping allowed for self-contained vehicles, it's a stargazer’s dream. No wonder it's a top spot for stargazing.

This 43-image panorama captures a sky full of jewels—some dimmed by fog and a dense atmosphere, but still shining through. I was stoked to spot again some northern hemisphere favourites like the Cygnus constellation, the Sadr region, and even the Andromeda galaxy peeking through the airglow on the far right. From this latitude, that’s about as high as they rise.

We’re just tiny specks in the vastness of space. This shot came almost exactly how I envisioned it: a small silhouette reflected in the water—subtle, but visible. I wanted the reflections to be real, imperfections and all. You might notice the reflected sky looks a little off—that’s because it is. I captured the foreground before the sky, and by the time I started shooting the stars, they had shifted quite a bit. That’s the challenge of shooting a multi-row panorama with limited time.

I had just 1 hour and 45 minutes before the sky started brightening (sunrise approaching). I was juggling two setups, trying not create too many ripples on the water, racing against twilight...no pressure at all :P. In fact, the last row of this pano was shot during astronomical twilight, with the zodiacal light already glowing in the east—thankfully, I was shooting west. No time for H-alpha shots this time around.

But I’ll be back next new moon to re-shoot this scene with a bit more time, and a slightly different approach.

A wasp mid air around the Stargazer’s.

This is a shot of the Milky Way along with a Man in the foreground as a pictorial representation of God's Creation (Genesis 1, 1–28). The man allows his mind to drift towards the past (up to seventy six thousand years ago) by gazing at the Milky Way.

The disk of the Milky Way is about 100,000 light-years in maximal diameter; Earth is located 25,800 light-yrs from the galactic core: It takes the light of the Milky Way's most remote stars 75,800 years to reach the stargazer's eyes; he now looks at the stars as they were in the past (so he looks into the past). There are four hundred billion (4 × 10¹¹) stars in the Milky Way.

A few nights ago, I climbed up to the rooftop of this traditional Iranian house in complete darkness, just to capture this photo. It was around midnight, and I had planned it in advance — I even brought a star filter lens with me to make distant lights appear like shining stars. The frame was exposed for about 30 seconds to allow enough light into the camera and reveal the hidden beauty of the scene. The colored glass, the brickwork, and the soft light dancing around the dome created a magical atmosphere. It felt like the silence of the night had been gently carved into this image.

Fortunately, Lt. Stargazer's quick thinking paid off and her actions disabled the Blacktron bio-synthetic creature and saved their captain. Relief and smiles all around as it seems like this nightmare is finally over.

"Huh, looks like the scanner works again…", says Ensign Korren from behind the group as he scans to confirm the creature is indeed disabled.

Described as 'A Stargazer's Dream', NASA is launching rockets into the northern lights for the next two weeks, the idea being to 'measure the timing and strength of the energy waves thrown around by this spring’s strong aurora.' (Alaska Public Media)

From my vantage point, I wasn't even aware of the rockets' launch, some 200+ miles away, just north of Fairbanks.

The night of northern lights was coming to a close in the wee hours of the morning, the northern lights were no longer very active and vibrant.

I almost threw out the photos of this series because the lights were not so good, until I noticed the rockets low on the horizon.

They appear low on the left horizon, just above the trees. First one early in the video, the second one near the end.

A couple of years ago, I owned a small sailboat. It wasn't too different from the one pictured here, maybe a little older and less equipped but similar in all of the ways that matter.

I miss it! ..or.. maybe I miss the idea of it...

I had a couple of software deals mature into some pretty decent deals for me and I had just buried both of my parents. I decided it was time to do something unpractical and selfish: like the Jimmy Buffet lyric suggested, "I bought a boat and sailed off on it.."

Problem is, I didn't sail too far.

We used the 30ft sailboat for some weekend getaways at first but it ended up spending more time in the Marina than being dragged by the wind across our Bays.

During my ownership of the boat, I tried to make some improvements. Among which was to try to give it a proper name. The boat's previous name, which I won't print, was a silly French New Orleans saying about not having two pennies to rub together. I thought that a more appropriate name would be, Stargazer. So we went with that.

Being a Stargazer myself, the name was also inspired from Star Trek, The Next Generation, Captain Picard's characterization of the first ship he ever captained:

He described that ship, also called Stargazer, as an

"overworked, underpowered vessel, always on the verge of flying apart at the seams."

Besides, the whole point was to spend time on the water, under the stars with nothing but the sound of the wind and the waves. Stargazer was a far more fitting name, I thought.

What I learned along the way is that renaming a boat is seriously frowned upon in maritime circles, it is considered terribly bad luck for the boat and the crew. Still, there is a generally-agreed-upon ceremony and procedure that one can employ to rename a vessel and keep the bad mojo away. After our Christianized version of the ceremony we removed anything from the boat that had the old name, as is the procedure. The superstition states that once you rename a vessel anything with the old name should not be returned to the vessel.

We put all of the old maintenance logs, manuals and documentation into a sealed bin and removed them from the boat.

After a while, sailboat ownership wasn't going as I'd planned. The family didn't exhibit a patience for the amount of time it took to travel by sail. I had bought the boat hoping to escape with my family, not escape from them. I spent far more time either 'working from' the boat or 'working on' the boat than I did enjoying it under sail.

Eventually my practicality caught back up with me and we sold the boat.

The person who bought it had all sorts of big ideas for it, too. After a haul-out, sea trial and comprehensive survey he started to make some improvements of his own prior to sailing it home to Texas. He made a couple road trips back and fourth from his home in Texas and the Marina on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay. When the day came for him to sail it home with a friend, I was a little surprised to see he brought the sealed box of documents with the old vessel name on board for the journey.

Evidently, that voyage home didn't go as expected. The 30 year old gasoline engine started to act up around Mississippi. I tend to believe this was related to an exhaust back-pressure issue they created by making changes to the exhaust system, rather than some vengeful seafaring deity that was pissed about the boat having been renamed.

Then, as they entered the waters coming into Texas, a near disaster struck. Strong storms shredded the sails, ripped off a spreader and started to bend the mast. They were rescued by the Coast Guard and the boat was hauled in to be repaired.

www.dvidshub.net/image/891993/coast-guard-members-rescue-...

www.dvidshub.net/image/891994/coast-guard-members-rescue-...

When I last talked to the new owner, that was enough sailing adventure for him, he planned to have the insurance repair the boat and sale it.

This all came back to me when I saw this sailboat moored comfortably in the waters around Nassau in The Bahamas. It was a bit of a knife of defeat into my gut. Stargazer's USGC stamps and captain's logs showed she had made the trip before and it was my intention to make the sail trip from Mobile, AL to the Bahamas. It was an adventure I didn't get the opportunity to undertake during my brief years of ownership.

With kids in school and a demanding work schedule, right now that adventure feels as far away as the Bahamas themselves but I'm hopeful to be able to pick that adventure up again in the coming years and finally get to make the journey, this time under sail and instead of from the comfort of a Cruise Line. :)

Stargazer's Garage: istargazer.blogspot.com

Speaking of boats... I don't believe there is a more humbling experience as a photographer than trying to photograph a Christmas Boat Parade ;)

We sat on some lawnchairs on the Wharf's floating dock at Stargazer's stern.

(The Wharf's dock is really quite stable for a floating dock, by the way.)

I couldn't being myself to accept 3200 ISO + on the shots but that seemed to be the sweet spot for reducing motion blur. They were clipping along pretty good.

Here, I used a boot flash and some zoom -- some cropping, some contrast addition to try to reconstruct what my eyes observed. The other 50 shots, all trash! :)

Photography aside, the lighted boat parade was an awesome experience. We made some hot chocolate for the kids and had a grand ol' time!

Thank you Brody for telling me about this!
