In dark skies you can see the red and green bands in the sky photos . This is airglow, and I often see it in my starfest Milky Way images.
Airglow is kind of a mysterious thing and is described as the light of excited atoms high in Earth’s atmosphere. It’s usually too faint for the eye alone to see. But under very dark skies, photographers can capture it.
Starfest, held every year in Mount Forest Ontario, is one of the oldest and largest astronomy festivals in Canada.
Some say it is also linked to solar activity at solar maximum ( where we are now in the solar cycle)
