Living in Duluth CN is overwhelmingly my most shot railroad nowadays. Back when I prowled the Staples Sub, though, this would have been an oddity.

Annnnnnnd today we had an entirely different kind of storm!! Mom nature graced us with a few inches of snow...which somehow seems magical here. Most likely it is because i know it will not last....tomorrow the sun will come out and melt it a bit and then it will freeze over to a sheet of ice thru Sunday, and on Monday it will be almost 50 degrees and it will be gone... like it never even happened!
I can take this, with only a little bit of whining...mainly because i do not like to feel cold...and i still really do not like snow. Here, i just don’t despise it!
My Artist Reception for tonight was cancelled due to the bad weather, which set into motion a ripple effect of changes over the next 2 weeks. Funny how one little thing can change a whole bunch of others.
The weekend is upon you...make it wonderful! make it count!!

Strobist info: Elinchrom Quadra with "A" head in a 48" softlighter style umbrella. Dialed down to minimum power at 8.2 ws I was able to get f2.8 and mix with ambient light.

+SN is the raw weather observation code for heavy snow sent by airport weather observers, or automated airport weather systems. On this night, an area of heavy snow, along with 30 MPH southeast winds, moved across northern Illinois, and I slowly plodded my way to Genoa to intercept this eastbound grain extra, led by CN 5688, an SD75i, in front of the decaying Genoa depot. EMD's always sounds great in the snow, or just great, period!

On the last day of 1973, E. Forrest Hadley captured Sacramento Northern Railway NW2u 607 at Stockton, California, in the company of Western Pacific Alco S2 560.
SN 607 started life as EMC NW2 demonstrator 889, which was purchased by Union Pacific as their D.S. 1000. In 1967 it and the former UP 1001 were purchased by the Stockton Terminal & Eastern Railroad, which traded them to WP in 1968 (for WP Alco S1's 501-506) after they were found to be in need of major repair work.
WP rebuilt them with 1200-horsepower prime movers as NW2u's WP 607 and 608. 607 was transferred to WP subsidiary SN in 1973, while 608 stayed with the WP. Both NW2u's lasted in service with WP/SN through the 1982 UP takeover.

On July 27, 1974, Peter Arnold captured Sacramento Northern Railway NW2u 607 at the Western Pacific Railroad's Stockton, California, shops. Note the Central California Traction Company Alco switcher in the background to the right.
Originally built as Electro-Motive Corporation (EMC) NW2 demonstrator number 889, it went to the Union Pacific as their number 1000. Stockton Terminal & Eastern bought it from them, then traded it to the Western Pacific for an Alco switcher. WP rebuilt it with a 1200-horsepower prime mover, numbered it WP 607, then transferred it to the SN in 1973. It's sister, WP 608 (also ex-UP and STE) received the same rebuild but remained with the WP. Both lasted in service until the UP merger in 1982.
The eclectic diesel roster of the SN is perfectly demonstrated by Baldwin VO 1000 407 as it sits outside the WP's Sacramento Jeffrey Shops along with SN F3-A 301-A. The 301-A is soon to be retired while the 407 will continue to soldier on for a few more years.
