I woke up early in the morning to wait for sunrise, and to try some long exposure shots for the Serenity series. This particular capture was exposed for 60 seconds, so the clouds are blurry and the water is clear. It was raining a little bit earlier and I think that I really need to clean my lens somewhat. But I am happy with the result.

Long exposure photography used to take a lot of time. I would travel to a remote location and stayed for hours, then circled back to the studio and worked on it for yet more hours. It still takes a lot of time but removing travel in the equation is far more efficient in the equation.
When I used to live in New York, I would sit in front of the Manhattan Bridge for hours with my tripods to do long exposure HDRs. But after 9-11, police would come and hurry me away, thinking that I am plotting an attack. Seriously WTF? Yes, I bet that a terrorist would spend 3 hours sitting under the bridge with a tripod just so you can see that he is analysing the structural engineering for attacks. NYPD has always been a hassle to me and is very annoying.
So more Hong Kong awesomeness for me now is that I can just mount my camera on the tripod at home and do landscape photography before I go to bed at night. This is a 30-second exposure and everything gets mixed to a beautiful blur. I love it so much that I have decided to try my hand at some Chinese poetry which rhymes.

Nature has a very magical property: under the right condition, one can look like another.
This looks like an aerial view of a snowy mountain, but in fact is a 11 second long exposure of the sea. The white streaks are mostly a result of the sunlight being reflected on the moving water surface. Eleven seconds is a long time for water to travel, and so it renders a rather unexpected capture.
In my mind, I had imagined that it would leave a long trail of something, but I too did not expect these results. Trust that I will be trying this more in the future, perhaps with a wider lens also.
The uneven exposure on the left side of the frame is somewhat unfortunate—it comes from the shadow of the building I am in. I tried to fix it a bit inside Photoshop but perhaps I should just try to avoid this spot next time.

It was raining all day when I visited Chang Bai Mountain (長白山). It was also very cold and I ended up shivering the entire time. I ended up not taking my tripod with me mostly because of the weight, so I turned to time-lapse stacks for long exposures again.

After taking some 15-minute shots, I thought why not take some 30-minute ones, and so here it is. Unlike the purple one which was shot from the horizon [1], this one was shot from the 27th floor near my bedroom window.
For this one I left the white balance at the “natural” settings, so you can see that normally the sky is just a very reddish glow . I also had a 15-minute shot for this, and for that capture you can see the clouds more clearly. But for pure illustration of the mood, you can’t beat the sky on this capture.
There is this odd streak in the middle of the frame, which I think might be a boat, but I was not looking at this capture the whole time I was photographing this so I cannot be sure.
This might eventually be reprocessed as black and white. As you can see there is really no “correct” way of setting the white balance on these night long exposure shots, which might be precisely the reason that most photographers just process them as black and white.

When I first posted a time-lapse video about a sunset cloudscape [1], a few people commented that they really liked the sequence about the sunset, but they wish that it was longer. Recently, I read about doing long exposure via stack sequences, so I tried to see if I can utilise this new knowledge to render a long-exposure shot this way since I have already a long series of captures done.
For this photo, I have used 36 captures spaced at 10-sec each to create the final image. The time spacing is probably a bit too wide to render the smoothest clouds, because it was originally intended as a time-lapse sequence and not an LE stack. I used Photoshop’s Stack Median functionality to blend the transition, then I lowered the clarity in Lightroom to smooth out some uneven edges on the clouds and water. And voila. It works pretty well, so I will definitely work on more in the future.

Situated adjacent to The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Water Sports Centre (Chinese: 香港中文大學水上運動中心), there is a ferry pier which provides regular ferry service to remote areas including Tap Mun and Ping Chau in the northeast New Territories [1, 2].
Pictured is a 15-second long exposure of the pier at night shot across the harbour from Ma On Shan. As with most super telephoto photos, I was quite surprised to see the details. For example, there is no way for me to see that someone is on the pier from so far away, and yet there he is, sitting by the pier. He appears to be fishing while a woman look on on the side.
Photographed with the 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L + 1.4x Extender, which effectively created a 560mm f/8L lens. With the exception of the Canon EOS 1D lineup, none of the other cameras can auto-focus at this size so it is manual focus. This also means that it is probably not going to be possible for me to use this combo for sports photography.

Purple and gold are the school colors for The Chinese University of Hong Kong (香港中文大學 CUHK), and so I feel that it would be fitting to process this night-time long exposure as such.
In ancient times, purple was the color worn by Roman Emperors and magistrates, and later by Roman Catholic bishops. Since that time, it has been commonly associated with royalty and piety. The color gold is likely to represent the phoenix in the university’s emblem.
This is a 60-second long exposure using the 6D + 24-70 f/2.8L mounted on Manfrotto tripod, remote release with the Canon TC-80N3.

Clouds move quite a bit, and if exposed for long enough, they would look like a blur. In broad daylight, it is marginally possible to expose for up to maybe a second without using any filters, but this is not enough to get the clouds to blur. Al most it would look like a mistake.
To do this, I use an ND2-ND400 variable filter set to the max. By using variable filters (which is essentially a stacked adjustable circular polariser) I can set to min to focus on the image and then dial the ND to the max to expose. A better setup which I prefer is to just drop an ND filter in front when I wish to expose, but I do not have something like that right now, so the variable filter does its magic—which allows just enough light for me to see what I am photographing.
The Canon TC-80N3 timer cable release is used to manually set the shutter speed, 19 seconds in this case, and minimize vibration of the setup.

25-second long exposure with the new 100-400 mounted on tripod. The 7D is in the shop right now so here with the 6D. Pretty sweet. I am testing the long end right now so this frame is probably a little bit too tight—but the fact that I can see the doors on in the building across the harbor is nice, I must say.
With these new toys I think that it is easy to get carried away with tech—sorry. Someone said that a self portrait of me playing with the 6D looks like a kid in the candy store—well maybe because I am [1]. :)

Gearing up for this coming weekend. I'll be showing at the Ocean Springs Art and Fresh Market. So I made a batch of my Palm Folk to bring in the big smiles.
painted palm fronds that I collected after hurricane katrina .I put in wooden sticks so they can be put in plants or gardens or whereever a smile is needed.
smlle
a group of mexicana wooden carved masks ranging from scary to happy,,notice the middle one has a snake nose...free pix just mention www.paperskull.com
I'm tired of hearing about how I never smile in any of my self-portraits. Yes, I do smile, all the time in fact! I believe I am a relatively smiley person. And no, "tortured" is not my "artsy face." I just feel goofy taking pictures of myself with a big toothy grin, okay? Are you happy now?

When at times they see us smlle.
But they little know the heartaches

But still will her memory cling fondly to me.
Could I have been there In the hour of death,
And caught the Iast words of her dying breath,
One fond whisper I might have heard.
And breathed in her ear a parting word.
Inserted by her loving Tom.
