Did Flickr change its view counting method after the recent UI change which shows photos in a never-ending scroll?

In the past, my typical daily view count circles around 3000 views per day, but as you can be seen in the screenshot here, it has gone up to the 5-digit range. So much so that in typical Flickr fashion they have probably locked my account two days before which moved view count to zero.

I know that they do inspect “suspicious activities” by temporarily locking accounts because every time my photos get used on prominent web sites, my view count will soar, and then immediately the next day I would see my view count drop to zero. But I am fairly certain that this is not such instance.

Also noted: normal new photo views typically circles around 50 at most daily but something posted yesterday now will circle in the 200+ values, leading me to suspect that something is going on — though exactly what is unclear.

“Tracking the trackers: Gary Kovacs explains Mozilla Collusion” #data #privacy #opinions

It was said that data is the new oil [1]. The data mining industry is an annual US$39 billion business. Like it or not, data is being collected about you surf the web. The technology was not intended as evil, but as Internet citizens we have the right to know what data is being collected and how it might affect us.

During a recent TED Talk, Gary Kovacs, the CEO of the Mozilla Corporations, demonstrated Collusion, a free Firefox add-on which visualizes your browsing behavior in real time. [2, 3]

In the visualization: the blue dots are sites which you have visited, the red dots are third party sites which are tracking you, and the gray dots are tracking data which could not be identified.

In his demo, Gary showed that 25+ sites started tracking him by checking emails during breakfast. An even more alarming aspect of this was installing the addon on his 9 year-old daughter’s computer and visualizing what companies are tracking through her browsing kids’ sites.

What Gary showed is the tip of an iceberg. Through my own consulting gigs in New York, several multi-national corporations have demonstrated what their own tech can track—which goes far beyond what is thought to be humanly possible. A very alarming feat indeed.

This is a visualization of traffic sources over a one-month period for SML Pro Blog on Google Analytics, highlighting in particular performance on social networks from Twitter (red), Facebook (blue) and Friendfeed (teal), with Google (SEO) traffic added for comparison.

Important to note also is the network connectivity associated with those profiles:

SML Facebook: 630 friends.

SML Friendfeed: 279 subscriptions

SML Twitter: 767 followers

I think that FriendFeed is a clear winner here. It even outperforms Google.

Last year, I asked a question on Quora asking why Apple ($AAPL) does not violate antitrust laws to default Safari as its browser on iOS devices while Microsoft ($MSFT) was fined billions for defaulting Internet Explorer in Windows. An anonymous user reasoned that Apple’s practice cannot be considered as monopolistic because it does not hold the majority share of the market [1].

A couple of days ago, Bloomberg reported that Apple has—for the first time—taken over Samsung to become the top mobile-phone maker in the U.S. [2]

Does this mean that it is finally possible to pressure Apple to give users the option to customize which browser is used by default on iOS? That would be very welcome, as Google ($GOOG) Chrome on iOS in my opinion gives a far better user experience than Safari, and frankly it is wasting a lot of time for me to be copying URLs from Safari just so that I can paste into Google Chrome.

Apple Inc. (AAPL) passed Samsung (005930) Electronics Co. to become the top mobile-phone maker in the U.S. for the first time, scoring a victory in the companies’ battle for global dominance of the mobile-device market.

The U.S. market is a stronghold for Apple as it faces intensifying competition from Samsung and other smartphone makers using Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android operating system. Samsung, which also makes cheaper handsets with less sophisticated functions, is the global leader in mobile phones with more than 100 million units sold last quarter.

Researchers find millions of vulnerable Net-facing printers, cams, and routers.

Security experts are advising that a networking feature known as Universal Plug and Play be disabled on routers, printers, and cameras, after finding it makes tens of millions of Internet-connected devices vulnerable to serious attack.

UPnP, as the feature is often abbreviated, is designed to make it easy for computers to connect to Internet gear by providing code that helps devices automatically discover each other over a local network. That often eliminates the hassle of figuring out how to configure devices the first time they're connected. But UPnP can also make life easier for attackers half a world away who want to compromise a home computer or breach a business network, according to a white paper published Tuesday by researchers from security firm Rapid7.

According to an SML trusted source [1] as well as available public media sources, Japanese fashion retail brand Uniqlo is considering a public listing by introduction on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2013 with no additional funding. The main purpose of the IPO is believed to be further establishment of brand image.

My being a lover of Uniqlo’s products, it is a no-brainer that it is on my buy-list.

Data is important to me. Some humans commented that I have a lot of tags. If you have no data, sure, you don’t need tags. But if you have 10,000+ media items on Flickr like I do, you tag, you organize, you make sure that everything you do is searchable so that when someone asked you for a photo, you are able to find it under 10 seconds. I can do that. Can you?

1. I use Adobe Lightroom, because it has tight integration with the EXIF metadata storage scheme implemented by Flickr.

2. When I enter information in the title / description area of Lightroom, it automatically populates the relevant fields on Flickr. www.flickr.com/photos/seeminglee/8429087032/

3. When I assign keywords inside Lightroom, they get populated as Flickr tags. Lightroom has an awesome feature which allows you to create synonyms for tags, and is what I currently do for Chinese tags. I am bilingual, Flickr is not. So assigning synonyms inside Lightroom, I tag once but then Flickr shows both Chinese and English on the page. www.flickr.com/photos/seeminglee/8429087032/

4. The JPEG format stores metadata information in the form of EXIF. Add /meta to the Flickr URL and you see it instantly. JPEG EXIF on Flickr is text only, making it very indexable by search engines. All that info you spend time organizing in Lightroom is reflected automatically. www.flickr.com/photos/seeminglee/8429087032/meta

Some people said that they have no idea where I find the time to popular these fields. I don’t. Everything is automatic. Things just get smartly embedded everywhere. With a few scripts anything is possible.

SML Opinions:

Yahoo has had a good year. I reason that it largely has to do with the economy of China. Although in Google is the defacto search engine in the US, when you move around the world you will notice that different parts of the world’s primary search engine differs greatly.

For example, in Hong Kong, the number 1 search engine that people reference (just by casual conversation) is Yahoo. In the UK, it seems that people reference Bing often. This is unusual to me. But if you think deeply, Google has many properties which are blocked by China’s Great Firewall. Google could not survive in China so if China is slowly becoming the creditor of the world, then it would make sense for companies which are able to survive in China to do well.

One must also not forget Baidu. There are a ton of amazing content available in Chinese. Just because you cannot read it does not mean that data is not available. This is often the number 1 thing I noticed about technology companies based in the US—they ignore the audience in other parts of the world while trying to be a global products and services company. You can’t force your language and culture onto others. Learn from history regarding world peace and diplomacy. Then you will go far.

I had so much fun last time that I decided to go back Skydive the Ranch for seconds (T2: Tandem 2)

I went with Adam S. Kirschner (Blog / YouTube) and his college buddie Brad for this round of crazy stunt.

Colin Sutherland could not make it because it was CME's birthday on Sunday. Eduardo F. Ortiz just jumped last week so he was not here either.

I am happy that my first skydiving video had generated enough buzz that has convinced Adam to come and he clearly had fun as well. See his video at YouTube: HiKirsch: Adam S. Kirschner - Skydiver

Last time was awesome, but this time I truly felt it. I still freaked a little when I jumped out of the plane, but it was all exciting shortly after... and for the first time around, I actually did enjoy the view very much.

Skydiving... highly recommended!

+ Adam S. Kirschner: I would like to thank Adam S. Kirschner for inviting me to go with him on his first skydive! I love people who can work hard and play hard, and as I mentioned in my previous blog post, those are exactly the kind of quality I seek to work with. I am impressed, and I am really glad that Adam had a great time also. I Love ASK! Kudos!

+ Beth Schuman: I would like to thank Beth Schuman for jumpsuit wardrobe assistance. Beth had her first skydive the same day and I am very honored to be her witness as she signed away her life to her tandem instructor.

+ Brad Schwatz: I would like to thank Brad Schwatz for skydiving with us. I am also really glad that I have successfully convinced him to throw close to three hundred bucks to get a video on his first skydive. Brad is a shoe designer, and definitely has an eye for shoes. Fashion fashionistas warning: you have approximately five years to scoop him up before I am ready to build my fashion collection.

+ Denes Gutai: I would like to thank Denes Gutai for being my T2 skydive instructor. Denes is also the U.S. exclusive distributor for Intrudair, a line of quality jumpsuit products from Hungary. I checked out the site last night and those pants are hot! I also find the logo design of Intrudair to be really inspiring. Go check it out at intrudair.hu!

+ Jeff Daniels: I would like to thank Jeff Daniels for skydiving with Brad.

+ Laszlo Andacs: I would like to thank Lazslo Andacs for shooting and editing the wonderful video above. Originally I was expecting this video to be similar to the first one shot by Oren Peri, as such I am very impressed to see the diversity in creativity in not just how the same subject can be explored, but also in terms of style and perspective. Very well done!

Removing history does not work. Public unsearchability creates a false sense of safety. Just because you are not searchable by the public domain does not equate unsearchability.

Put yourself in the shoe of Google: if you just spend a whole lot of resources to dig up all these information, are you really going to disposed them all that easily? Most likely not. If I were Google, I will be happy to remove your result from the public domain to keep peace with you.

Tada! Due to quesiontable actions committed by you to fulfill your very desire to remove data, I have just identified why I get into the search business at the first place: to mine important intelligence data that no one else has a copy of. Thanks to your help, I have just identified what you considered to be most damaging to your credibility. I’m sure that businesses will pay me tons of money just to get their hands onto my treasure chest.

Spezify is a search tool presenting results from a large number of websites in different visual ways.

"We take web search further, away from endless lists of blue text links and towards a more intuitive experience. We want you to get a good overview of a subject, find useful information and be inspired with Spezify.

We mix all media types and make no difference between blogs, videos, microblogs and images. Everything communicates and helps building the bigger picture.

We collect websites and are aiming to use as many relevant, free and open API:s as possible to generate extensive and diverse search results."

Spezify was founded in Stockholm, Sweden by Felix af Ekenstam and Per Persson who have over 10 years experience within the creative digital industry.

A beta was released late April 2009 and the first official version went online on the 15th of June. The developers are constantly working on Spezify, adding API:s and enhancing the search experience for upcoming versions.

“Bjango iStat Menus 4”

A nice update from version 3, iStat Menus 4 is a powerful and highly customisable system monitor with nice UI graphics so you can get to all your system data quickly and efficiently.

Pictured:

1/ Sensors. Displays temperature, voltage, current levels, HDD spin rate etc of all your system components. This is how I know that the MacBookAir often runs at temperature above 100˚C when crunching numbers (e.g. video rendering).

2/ Network. Displays current network traffic as well as breaking down who is using how much. Very useful to narrow down which app is using all your network traffic and preventing you to view your streaming video adequately.

3/ CPU. Displays CPU usage load broken down by User / System / Nice / Idle. Also displays load average a la “top”. I am fairly sure that the load average of 1 denotes single core levels — so max for a quad core machine is 4 — but the percentage values denotes 4 as 100% (this is a change from iStat Menus 3 where 100% means 1 core).

4/ Memory. Does not really require much explanation. Inactive is essentially free-able memory. This touches on the specifics of OSX which is too long to explain so I won‘t bother.

5/ Battery. A nice battery breakdown not just about the computer but also all the bluetooth devices which requires charging.

6/ Date/Time. My favorite of the bunch. Highly customisable Date/Time display so I can configure everything in ISO 8601 style complete with time zone information. This makes it easy for me to note the order of events if I decided to screenshot anything. Allows additional cities to be added and configured in the way one wishes.

Verdict: highly recommended for the Mac data nerds. Normal humans can skip if the review above is all jibberish to you.

This could be the RAID Thunderbolt solution I have been looking for. Introduced during the CES 2013 earlier this year, the LaCie 5big comes with five hot swappable 7200rpm/64MB cache hard disks which are preconfigured as a RAID 0 array, but can optionally be configured as RAID 1 or JBOD configuration (aka RAID 5).

It has dual 10 Gb/s Thunderbolt ports for easy daisy chaining with up to 6 additional drives. The aluminium enclosure features a Noctua® magnetic levitation cooling fan, promising high-performance yet quiet operations with zero-vibration. Acoustics is rated at 25-28dBA.

Average transfer rate at 785MB/s read and 695MB/s write means that it can handle multiple 2K uncompressed 10-bit streams, a dream come true for the media production workflow.

Two models are available. The MSRP for the 10TB is US$1,199 and the 20TB goes for US$2,199. Reasonably affordable especially she compared to the Pegasus.

I am waiting for reviews to come in right now before making the purchase to make sure the build is good, but it is definitely now on my to-buy list if they perform as well as the specs say.

Originally I was expecting this video to be similar to the first one shot by Oren Peri, as such I am very impressed to see the diversity in creativity in not just how the same subject can be explored, but also in terms of style and perspective. Very well done!

2007-10-13 I went skydiving again!

SML Google: See-ming Lee - SML Skydive 2007.10.13 - Crazy Again!

SML Skydive video remix

Two months have passed and I still have not had the chance to remix my first video, but with these new footage shot by Laszlo Andacs, I should have enough materials to create my upcoming dance track, Crazy is Good. Stay tuned. For more SML Music, visit smlMusic.com.

US Mobile phones are always locked so I never really had any SIM cards to play with til I moved to Hong Kong. What I find interesting is that they all comes in the form of a credit card size with information on them. The SIM card is cased in a breakout – then the micro SIM is further broken out from its larger brother. A fairly usable design. I dig it.

No content on main domain yet but working on it – at least now there's a developer – so hopefully soon. Twitter feed currently used as data sourcing for SML Search.

TweetPsych uses two linguistic analysis algorithms (RID and LIWC) to build a psychological profile of a person based on the content of their tweets. The service analyzes your last 1000 tweets and works best on users who have posted more than 1000 updates. It also works best on accounts that are operated by a single user and use Twitter in a conversational manner, rather than simply a content distribution platform.

TweetPysch is created by Dan Zarella.
