Control What Gets Seen by Dawn Starling

The music was loud enough to feel in my chest before I even stepped inside.

 

Not the kind of loud that drowns you out but the kind that pulls something honest out of you. The bass hummed through the walls, through the floor, through me, like it already knew every version of myself I’d tried to bury.

 

I leaned back against the speakers, letting the warmth of the lights wrap around my skin. Everything here felt electric. Alive. Like this was the one place I didn’t have to pretend I was softer than I really was.

 

The camera rested in my hand, cool and familiar, like an extension of myself. I didn’t lift it to hide. I didn’t lift it to capture anything.

 

I held it because it reminded me that I control what gets seen.

 

Not every moment belongs to the world. Some things exist just for me. The quiet confidence. The way I hold myself when no one’s asking me to. The version of me that doesn’t apologize for taking up space.

 

I’ve always existed somewhere between chaos and control.

 

Between wanting to be held… and wanting to be the reason someone forgets how to breathe.

 

There’s power in that space.

 

Power in knowing exactly who you are, even when the world tries to rename you. Power in choosing how much of yourself people are allowed to see. The softness. The danger. The invitation.

 

The lights wrapped around me like a spotlight I never asked for but never ran from either. In that moment, I wasn’t hiding. I wasn’t shrinking.

 

I was exactly what I was meant to be.

 

Unapologetic. Unfiltered. Mine.

 

And maybe that’s the real secret.

 

Not becoming someone new…

But finally letting yourself exist without permission.

Where the Silence Still Knows My Name by Dawn Starling

The dock was quieter than I expected.

 

The kind of quiet that didn’t feel empty… but heavy. Like the world itself was holding its breath, waiting to see if I would break or finally breathe again.

 

The sunset bled across the water in deep crimson and amber, the colors melting into each other the same way memories do when you stop fighting them. I stood there for a while, letting the wind move around me, tugging at my sleeves, brushing against my skin like it was trying to remind me I was still here. Still real. Still something.

 

It’s strange how places remember you.

 

Every step along the wood felt familiar, like echoes of versions of myself I’d left behind. The softer one. The reckless one. The one who loved too hard and never learned how to let go gently. Pieces of her still lived here in the quiet, in the glow, in the way the horizon refused to fully fade.

 

I didn’t come here to be fixed.

 

I came here to exist.

 

To feel the weight of everything without pretending it wasn’t mine.

 

And for the first time in a long time… I didn’t run from it.

 

I let the silence hold me.

I let the light wrap around me.

I let myself simply be.

 

Because sometimes healing doesn’t look like moving forward.

 

Sometimes it looks like standing still long enough to remember who you were before the world tried to soften your edges.

 

And maybe… those edges were never meant to disappear.
