This was around election time in Sri Lanka. Luckily I was with a group that looked obviously foreign, and I bet the tour van helped get us through the security checkpoints without inspection.
These checkpoints were set up about every three intersections all around Colombo and security was especially tight at night. There were two to five officers standing around sandbagged fortresses scanning every which direction.
The officers were armed with a heavy duty on their shoulders. And they may question any suspicious pedestrian and inspect any vehicle, and you'd better not:
1. Ask questions (even if duty-related) while they are on duty;
2. Expect or even hope that they will come close to smiling, while on duty at least;
3. Expect the soldiers to return any courtesies that may lead onlookers to interpret their action to be friendly (e.g., hand-shaking, conversing, smiling, ...).
But don't worry, they won't shoot you for no reason (although I haven't tried anything extreme), and frankly they should be a happy bunch because their room and board and medical expenses are all taken care of by the government.
