Cape Izu-misaki is situated in the northwestern part of Miyake-jima. The lighthouse built in 1909 is the oldest in Izu Islands.
Both Nii-jima (新島) and Shikine-jima (式根島) are volcanic islands. Don't overlook Shikine-jima as it is low and flat. Izu Peninsula is located 50km behind these islands.
Igaya (伊ヶ谷) is a community located in the northwest of Miyake-jima. There are three ports used by the passenger ship to and from Tokyo downtown, and Igaya port is one of such ports. A port is chosen everyday by considering the weather conditions and probably other political factors and announced three hours prior to the arrival of the ship.
On the day of my returning to Tokyo downtown, I went to the Igaya port as the port has been chosen in the past few days. After spending some time in the Igaya community and beach, I was informed that the ship would arrive at Miike (三池) port on the opposite side of the island, which is 15km away (^_^;)
Kouzu-shima, Shikine-jima, Nii-jima and To-shima are seen on the horizon.
Ookubo-hama (大久保浜) is located on the northern coast of Miyake-jima near Kamitsuki (神着). Miyake-jima is a volcanic island of Andesite, therefore its beaches are black.
This is a view toward north. Names of Izu Islands are Shikine-jima (式根島), Niijima (新島), Toshima (利島), and Izu Ooshima (伊豆大島) from left to right. Shikine-jima is almost hidden by the horizon. Between Niijima and Toshima, Izu Peninsula and Mt. Fuji would be seen if you are lucky.
These islands, Izu peninsula, and Mt. Fuji are all volcanos, and they form a volcano chain that extends further south to Iwo Jima (硫黄島), a tropical island that became a fierce battle ground during the WWII.

This strange place name translates to something like "Foreigner Harbour Castle", but it is merely a rocky, rather barren piece of land overlooking the sea near Shikine-jima's western end. Shikine-jima is one of the Izu Islands, stretching into the Pacific Ocean south of Tokyo.

Cape Izu-misaki (伊豆岬) is located in the northwest of Miyake-jima. It is so named because Izu Peninsula (伊豆半島) of the Japanese main island is seen from the cape if the visibility is good.
Izu Islands of Kouzu-shima (神津島), Shikine-jima (式根島) and Nii-jima (新島) are on the horizon from left to right. Distance from Miyake-jima to these islands are 30-50 km.
The blooming plant is Hamakanzou (coastal orange daylily, Hemerocallis fulva var. littorea).

Most of the island is covered in lush vegetation, and the sea is blessed with a wide variety of both temperate and tropical marine species such as colorful tropical fish, hard coral, soft coral and sea turtles due to tropical water brought by the Kuroshio Current.
