GOAL 8: DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

The SDGs promote sustained economic growth, higher levels of productivity, and technological innovation. Through sustainable, green development, the goal is to achieve full and productive employment - and decent work - for all women and men by 2030.

Montenegro, as part of a GEF-funded project implemented by UNDP in conjunction with the country’s Ministry for Sustainable Development and Tourism, is working towards carbon-neutral tourism by developing new bike routes; partnering with festivals across the country to go completely green; installing solar benches which serve as phone charging stations but also provide data on air quality, noise, temperature, and humidity; and providing a web-based carbon calculator for tourists to measure their environmental impact when visiting.

This photo was taken 9/5/2020 on the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio. I wanted to travel here to see this in person after we had a UMD alumni talk about his company cleaning and restoring the Cuyahoga River in ENST 452 last spring. This photograph shows the Cuyahoga River along with several industrial railroad lift bridges built in the early 1950’s. These bridges, along with many other abandoned structures along the Cuyahoga River, show the importance this river had on the economic growth within Cleveland, Ohio when trains and boats were necessary for industrial shipping.

I chose to use the UN SDG 8 “Decent Work and Economic Growth” to describe this photo. The ecological principle I am trying to show is how the environment was adapted for major economic growth during the ‘golden age of capitalism’ within the 1950’s to transport industrial goods for business. Currently the river is now a focus for environmental economic incentive as many environmental companies are aiming to clean and restore this river to reverse the damage done to it decades ago. The years of poor water management and lack of environmental laws have led to modern economic opportunity for ecological companies to restore the once polluted river.

This photo was taken November 16th, 2022 around 9:00 am in Cockeysville Maryland. A friend and recent graduate from University of Maryland had asked me if I would help him along with several other guys unload Christmas trees that they were going to sell from their family produce stand. They had bought the trees from a farm in North Carolina and had them shipped up to Maryland on the bed of the tractor trailer which can be seen to the right of the trees. They had purchased over +400 trees (many not pictured) ranging anywhere from 7 to 16 feet tall and were projected to sell out by early December as they had purchased 700 the previous year and sold out fairly quickly.

I would relate this picture to sustainable development goal #8 or Decent Work and Economic Growth. I say this because this friend has made this a tradition where he invites college kids, who are in need of money to come help unload trees paying them a flat rate for helping which comes right around the holidays when everyone is tight for cash. All the people he has come help each year know that he will pay a reasonable amount and buy lunch for everyone after. It has become a nice little bonus for all the guys and both parties come out of the deal happy.
