The Tonlé Sap Lake occupies a geological depression (the lowest lying area) of the vast alluvial and lacustrine floodplain in the Lower Mekong Basin, which had been induced by the collision of the Indian Plate with the Eurasian Plate. The lake's size, length and water volume varies considerably over the course of a year from an area of around 2,500 km2, a volume of 1 km3 and a length of 160 km at the end of the dry season in late April to an area of up to 16,000 km2, a volume of 80 km3 and a length of 250 km as the Mekong maximum and the peak of the South-West monsoon's precipitation culminate in September and early October.

Tonle Sap - Cambodia's natural wonder. The Tonle Sap, also called "Great Lake", is the largest lake in Southeast Asia. It is located almost in the middle of Cambodia, occupying an immense geological depression. Due to the effects of the dry season and the water flow in the Mekong the lake increases to many times its normal size. Its feed river runs one way for six months and the other for six months.
A belt of freshwater mangroves known as the "flooded forest" surrounds the lake. The floodplains in turn are surrounded by low hills, covered with evergreen or deciduous seasonal tropical forest. Interlocking forest, - grassland and marshland patches provide for the abundant local wildlife.
The lake’s flooded forest and the surrounding floodplains are of utmost importance for Cambodia's agriculture as the region represents the cultural heart of Cambodia, the center of the national freshwater fishery industry - the nation's primary protein source.

So the sap is flowing and we tapped one of our maples to make a bit of maple syrup. Cooking it on the woodstove has been slow going because it's been warm outside and we really didn't need to have the stove so hot. I had to put it on the kitchen stove for quite a while. Assassinata a Rio de Janeiro Marielle Franco, 38 anni, era consigliera comunale e la sua uccisione ha suscitato grande emozione in Brasile: in molte città del Paese oggi sono previste manifestazioni.
Marielle, attivista del Partito Socialista e della Libertà (PSOL), è stata uccisa in pieno centro mentre in un auto stava tornando da una manifestazione per la difesa dei diritti delle donne di colore. Secondo i primi elementi dell'inchiesta, i colpi sono stati esplosi da un'altra macchina che ha affiancato l'auto della consigliera.
L'associazione per i diritti umani Amnesty International ha chiesto "un'indagine immediata e rigorosa", in modo che "non ci siano dubbi sul contesto, le motivazioni e gli autori dell'assassinio".

Tonle Sap Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. Also called Boeung Tonle Sap, it has one of the world’s most vibrant ecosystems. There are different species of wildlife in and around the lake, which helped to sustain and grow the ancient Khmer civilisation. It's also famous for its fascinating local communities and their floating villages.
Located in Siem Reap, the massive lake is 250 km in length and 100 km across at its widest point, making it seem like an inland ocean because it is impossible to see the opposite shore from ground level. Surprisingly, it's fairly shallow, with a maximum depth of only 10 metres.
