A surprise find, but I believe there may be a breeding pair at Terra Cotta Conservation area! I was busy photographing warblers when suddenly I was surprised to hear a tapping sound, low and behold a Yellow Bellied Sapsucker enjoying some sap within close range! Tough lighting conditions (bright sun, harsh shadows) but you take what you can get!
Thank you very much for the comments, favorites and for your time

Tonle Sap is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. Its size fluctuates between 2,700 sq. km and 16,000 sq. km depending on the season.
It is part of the Mekong river system and functions as a detention basin as the water of the Mekong flows in during the rainy season thereby expanding its size and reducing the risk of flooding in the Mekong Delta that is now part of Vietnam.
The whole lake is designated as a Biosphere Reserve of UNESCO thanks to its high-level of biodiversity. It is surrounded by the flooded forests as you see in the photo, which inundate during the rainy season.

Sap flows through a portion of the outer tree trunk called sapwood. Sapwood consists of actively growing cells that conduct water and nutrients (sap) from the roots to the branches of the tree. During the day, activity in the cells of sapwood produces carbon dioxide.
The internet is such a source of trivia :)
The first night of hard freeze (this year being Jan 6 in North Texas) triggered the Frostweed stems to split and release the sap which crystalized in ribbons.
Tree sap dripping from a conifer where a limb had been cut off. I am fascinated by the wrinkly patterns on the sap.
The light kept changing, I couldn't get close enough, the wind almost blew me over.
An Orange-crowned Warbler feeding on frozen Maple sap that was melting in the sun. Apparently humans aren't the only ones who like Maple syrup ;o)
This bird is one of a few of its species wintering in our part of southern Ontario this season, outside of its typical winter range.
Psalm 92:14 “They (the righteous) will still yield fruit in old age; They shall be full of sap and very green.”
This female Yellow-bellied sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius) was a day later but in the same vicinity as the other two woodies at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center. It was a bright day so I added the 1.4 extender to the big lens. You can see all the holes around the trunk that provides sap for her. This is only the second time I've seen this species, we are on the edge of the non-breeding to migration range.
For 122 Pictures in 2022 #94 "Something you found", this is sap oozing out of a mesquite tree along a trail in the Oso Bay Wetland Preserve" in Corpus Christi, TX. At the moment the severe drought has made the area not much of a wetland, but mesquite (a highly invasive species here), does thrive where there is sometimes water. But where the tree is native, it was used for a number of things, including food (the seed pods), lumber, and the sap was used for both dyes (when mixed with the dark bark) and medicinal purposes. The sap has a remarkable golden red color, and frequently oozes out during the hot summers.

Southeast Asia’s largest fresh water lake with fishery providing an important source of food and income for millions of people depending on the natural and agricultural habitats.
During dry season the Tonle river drains the lake into the Mekong river near Phnom Penh. During rainy season the massive floods carried by the swollen Mekong reverse the flow and fill Tonle Sap lake from 2,700 to 16,000 square km surface area.
.
In recent years the ever more dams built on the Mekong upstream have led to more frequent draughts and lack of sediments and nutrients carried down river and into the lake.
Tonle Sap used to provide around 500,000 tonnes of fish or 70% of Cambodia‘s annual protein intake. 2019 natural fish catches reportedly amounted to just over 14,000 tonnes.

A social and ecological disaster in the making in plain sight.
This shot here is from a visit in 2013 at a time with relatively low water level at the end of the dry season.
